Not true, really. Not any more expensive than any other 4 year degree at a university. I’ve returned to school at the age of 30-something and am majoring in anthropology and archaeology as a second career, with a minor in history. The field schools available for hands on experience are often times covered by your student grants and loans as they can be incorporated into the program and curriculum of the school being attended. My plans are to obtain my Bachelors, in addition to an alternative teaching certificate. This will allow me to teach school during the school year and work on digs during the summer months through contract archaeology.
For my Masters, I’ll be attending a university that offers a program in Nautical Archaeology in order to specialize in underwater excavations.
