"Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword."
--Matthew 10:34

"It has served us well, this myth of Christ." Pope Leo X

They say that all roads lead to Rome. No one can deny the societal impact that this culture had in history; ruling the majority of the known world, while waging war after war in accumulation of nearly every known trade route on the planet. In 325ad, with Emperor Constantine and the Council of Nicea, Rome metamorphosized into a new religious structure, based on the emergence of Jesus Christ, and arguably more powerful then any organized religion that had ever come before. In fact, some believe that the Church of Rome, the Vatican, is actually nothing but a transformation of older Babylonian mystery schools, and that the religious centerpiece of the Roman empire predates Rome itself; back to the time of Nebechenezzer and the Tower of Babel. Whatever the case, we know for a fact that the inner mystery religion of Rome was based primarily on the Persian and Indian sun-god Mithra, as well as gods that took dominion and rulership over each of the planets in our solar system. Mars, Venus, Saturn, Pluto, and all the rest.

In other words, astrological representations of the known planets that revolve around our sun. The Roman messenger god, Mercury, based on the Greek Hermes, and Egyptian Thoth, was said to be the wisest of all the gods, because he was positioned closest to the sun itself and could over-hear all of God's secrets. meh, Jesuits are just a bunch of rowdy kids who grew up and turned jesus-freak. However in catholic circles they have a reputation for drinking, possibly because a lot of them are teachers, that would make me drink too. thumbsup.gif

Well im going to stick my neck out here and say that a lot of (if not all) great civilizations had a great religion.
Someone please point out an atheistic civilization that had a profound effect on human history (meaning before 1950).
The 21st century will be the age of materialism (imo), religion of money, god of mammon. Atheist heaven on earth...
We'll have to see how long it lasts?
mako
I agree with you on that one...every great civilization of the past has had a great religion (at least to them)...I figure that the current religions will give way not to Atheism, but more to something like Deism or something very similar. I also think that whatever replaces the current religions will last a long long time, probably longer than Christianity or Isalm has been (after all, they haven't lasted half as long as their predecessors). yes.gif

I agree with mako, i'd add that the reason Deism would thrive and last is because people would see the value in a construct of love and harmony and cooperation, Collective beliefs create behavior, this is off topic (no disrespect to the Thread starter) but take alook at homosexuality where once it was horrible the collective or the majority no longer hold that beleif and in no time and we are seeing the progress and growth and before long being gay will be natural ........

Deism, pantheism, atheism... all cut from the same cloth (imo) or very similar. For one of those or similar "religions" to take over i think the scriptures will have to be conclusively discredited, hence the fierce aercheological and scientific debates about the Bible's histrocity.
Often unsighted agendas (theocratic and atheistic scholars) become apparent and science and reason suffers. Abscence of evidence is not evidence of abscence but arguments from silence are not valid.

I for one dont think deism will take a hold soon because one of the keys into becoming a deist is to reason w00t.gif (all be it very open reasoning, deists can make their god out to have any characterestics as long as it is reasonable to them) correct me if im wrong

Actually that’s not true, all it takes (and what is going on in Europe and more and more in America) is for the members to vote with their feet! No more members, no more religion!

QUOTE
Abscence of evidence is not evidence of absence

Old apologetic argument but actually absence of evidence, while not proof of absence, is very strong evidence of absence!

QUOTE

You can say that for any religion, Christians don’t seem to agree (from denomination to denomination) on the characteristics of their gods. Deists have one factor that they have to consider and that is their observations of the creation, it’s natural laws, etc…If their characteristics that they make out don’t agree with the evidence, then it probably isn't acceptable. But you are right, most people want their religion spoon-fed to them through some sort of mythology (look at Islam, Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, etc) and would be too lazy to use reason! yes.gif

"It has served us well, this myth of Christ." Pope Leo X
you should be aware that Leo X didnt say that, at least no more than Henry IV said "Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown." It appears in a satirical play with the title Pagent of the Popes written by a John Bale. Perhaps, Imaginary Friend, if you are in communication with the author, you could tell him.

Here I found were it came from.

It has served us well, this myth of Christ. (sometimes misquoted as "How profitable this fable of Christ has been to us.")
Widely quoted without source on the Internet. From a satire by John Bale (1495-1563), The Pageant of the Popes: "For on a time when a cardinall Bembus did move a question out of the Gospell, the Pope gave him a very contemptuous answer saying: All ages can testifie enough howe profitable that fable of Christe hath ben to us and our companie."
