I just have random ghost stories about my campus. It is supposed to be the most haunted campus in Alabama by far, and maybe in the whole south east. It's fun to take people who don't go there or freshmen around campus at night, 'cause there is lots to see/hear.
We have King House on King Quad. The King's owned the whole area and their house is preserved. It was a plantation home, but it is very small and brick, with a kitchen area off to the side. Visitors are taken inside sometimes, but supposedly old man King walks around the Quad or the house at night looking for gold he hid. There are a million stories about the house, but for sure it is creepy. You have to walk past it to get to most of the buildings on campus, but even in the day time you sometimes feel watched, or see a curtain move. It has huge cellar doors that have the biggest padlocks I have ever seen, and the drains on the bottom of the house are barred with steel bars and have a steel sheet behind that. We speculate on what they have down there and I'm going with a counterfiet business or massive stacks of dead bodies (not really), but maybe the police just got sick of rescuing stranded and scared kids. It is not hard to break in at night and it is extremely creepy. Even though the front door is locked, some people (mostly girls, but a couple of guys) have gotten the door to open by asking Mr. King to open it. And I don't mean the door knob works better...I've seen it. They ask a couple of times and the door pops open a crack. People have also reported hearing an old phone ring in the kitchen (there is no electricity in there), and have had their drinks or food disappear in the main house during a break in. Pledges or new team members have been made to go in and won't talk about it afterwards.
There is a King family cemetary behind Hill House, as well. It is very small, but supposedly a small black girl sits near it and cries sometimes. The King's definitely owned slaves as they were typical plantation owners. She is supposed to be one of them. They are buried in the areas under campus. The King cemetary is small and walled in by old stones but it always seems to be very cold even on a hot day and is one of the most traditionally creepy cemetaries you've ever seen, even though it is right by campus buildings, a parking lot, and a road.
Main Dorm is famous for it's ghost, Condie. Around the turn of the century Montevallo was an all girls' college, and the girls had curfew and lights out. One night Condie was making brownies using some kind of hot plate and heard the lights out call. In the rush to hide the cooking supplies, her nightgown caught fire and she burst out of her room screaming, on fire, running down the stairs. (Main has a huge stair case down all four flights. Condie's room was supposedly on the very top floor which has only four rooms, and was supposedly the last on the left, now storage, though some have said the school won't actually tell students which room was hers and that it was actually on one of the sorority halls on the 3rd floor east or west wings). Condie was taken to a hostpital for her severe burns, but died there soon after. However the door to her room developed a burning face on it. There are pictures and I will see if I can find some, but it is true that it is a devil face at first impression. The door scared some students, so it was replaced with a new wooden door, which developed a face as well. The school gave up. The original door is kept behind a locked metal door which leads to a staircase to the roof. It is not hard to get in, as students routinely climb to the roof by fire escape. The rest of the building has its original wooden doors from that time period (and you can tell, believe me-the entire building is very old and looks it. supposedly it could be entirely engulfed in flames in 8 minutes). Others have slight faces as well, like the ones on that fourth floor hall, and one by the elevator. There is also the same face in one of the skylights on the side closest to where Condie lived, above the stairs she ran down. Some say you can hear her screams sometimes. I never have, but I have definitely seen girls joke about Condie only to see doors open and close, water turn on or off, toilets flush, tvs go off, etc. The joking quickly ends. I have also been in rooms where the faucet was dripping and jokingly my friend asked Condie to stop it beause it was driving her crazy. It ceased. The doors frequently open and close of their own volition, which is probably due to uneven flooring and an old foundation, but it is unsettling. The entire building is creepy, especially at night.
Reynolds is one that I give the most credit to, personally. It is an old and elegant white building next to Main Dorm. It is named after a civil war figure, Reynolds. He supposedly had to leave his injured troops to provide back up (Reynolds was once a hospital and when one walks into the original building it is immediately apparent). Upon his return, the were all dead, killed by nothern troops. He vowed never, ever to leave his post again, and apparently he hasn't. Reynolds houses communcations and theater studies, and the small Reynolds theater is the only place on campus where students have reported physical hauntings. Many have been unable to breathe, as though someone were choking them, while in the theater at night. The stage is small, and in the drop cloth on the back, you can sometimes see movement and shadows or even hear whispers. I have personally seen things move in the theater with no explantation (and promptly ran back out the door we broke into). There is also supposedly a soldier who haunts the theater students and has a preference for blonde females.
Palmer Hall is the admissions building and houses the theater where the College Night productions take place. Students on campus become members of the Gold side or Purple side and participate in intramurals, contests, overall spirit, and finally put on full scale musicials written, produced, and performed by students. It is the oldest Homecoming tradition in the US and is a huge part of campus life. Supposedly during practices before college night the big chandeliers swing to the side that will win (Gold is on the right and Purple is on the left, from the back of the theater). The Trambour ghost is supposed to be responsible for this and I have heard that he is usually right. He also supposedll bangs pipes. It can certainly get loud in Palmer at night.
The Delta Chi house, which is across the street from campus, supposedly has a ghost, though this is just more of an urban legend the fraternity members like to tell. The old lady of the house supposedly walks through the house (the door opens and closes by itself and you can sometimes hear creaks on the floorboards).
The entire campus is frequently covered in fog and is extremely shady. Though there are always stories of suicides by jumping off of the water towers and the tower by the caf, or out the windows of main, I have yet to hear those from a reliable source.
Underneath the campus (and I think a good bit of the town) are tunnels. This, at least, is real. When one walks across campus you will see large square metal sheets on the ground. Underneath are manhole covers. These are tunnel entrances, used during the Civil War. The tunnels still exist today, though no one knows if they have caved in or not. There is no entrance that I know of personally that you can get into that is not covered by a manhole (and bricked), but I have heard that there is one off campus that is not bricked. I have also heard there is one connected to a tunnel containing pipes under Main, but was too scared to go down the pitch black tunnel (I could not see the end with my MagLite), so I do not know. Underneath Main is a collection of what used to be dorms rooms that are now boiler rooms. It is very easy to break into this area, and though it is not said to be haunted, is creepy enough to be worth your time. It is dusty and dank and lit only by a few bare bulbs. The entrace way has old mirrors and pieces of furniture and the boiler and storage rooms contain freezers and old bed frames as well as machinery. The room to the left also contains dusty mirrors and old furniture and that is where the pipes run into a tunnel under the dorm.
In general, the campus is creepy, shady, misty, and most buildings on campus have a creepy story connected with them. These are the highlights. Most students who have lived on campus, especially in Main or Brooke dorms have stories to tell as well.
