In honor (or honour, as our members across the Pond would say wink2.gif ) of Halloween, I thought I'd start a thread about our favorite....MWAHAHAHAA!!!..."haunts".

My favorite cemetery is in my hometown of Rochester, NY. Mount Hope Cemetery was the first municiple cemetery in the US, meaning reglardless of the Christian denomination or religion you belonged to, you could be buried there. The cemetery was established in 1838, and was built on a very hilly section of land right outside of the city. Now there's a major hospital right down the street, and generic urban sprawl all around, but the cemetery remains peaceful and unchanged. Like most cemeteries, Mount Hope has been the victim of vandals over the years, but all in all, the graves are in very good shape. The unusual lay of the land makes Mount Hope a lot of fun to explore...sometimes you'll find an old grave and feel like you're the first person who's seen it in years. original.gif

As far as I know, there are no ghosts or "black aggies" in Mount Hope, although the victims of various tragic accidents and wars are buried there. For example, the mass grave from the orphanage fire back in the late 1800's. The cemetery's two most famous "residents" are Fredrick Douglas, the escaped slave who became an abolitionist, and Susan B. Anthony, who fought for women's right to vote. It's one of my favorite places to walk around, especially in the fall.

My local graveyard is I suppose my favourite; the area, once a village, is now subsumed by the town. I walked through it every day to school and at various times of day and night without ever experiencing anything out of the ordinary. Some of the older boys had a trick with the flagpole meant to scare the younger ones.

St Nicholas' church in central Brighton has several interesting graves of minor local notables. There is supposed to be the ghost of a white horse that canters about the place at night. This was either due to a nobleman insisting on burial with his favourite horse, or a sacrifice made there before christian times. It was allegedly seen by members of the Home Guard during WWII.

best graveyard? well visit the one in spondon village, near derby, derbyshire. Everyone buried there who is male is called william, and some all of the gravestones have a weird symbol engraved on each of them.

there,s a cemetery near CULLODEN,(the famous 1 hour battle site) and it lies in the middle of nowhere, it's got grave stones dating back to the 1600's. It was'nt spooky or anything, just a little weird to be stuck out so far away from any civilization.

Dang, I wanted to take some pictures of Mount Hope to post up here, but I lent my brother my digital camera for the weekend and he's refusing to give it back until Sunday...the day AFTER I'm going up to the cemetery. crying.gif He's such a brat. But at any rate, I'll let you guys know if I find anything interesting this Saturday. As it turns out, Mount Hope IS haunted-- early Rochester residents reported strange lights and sounds coming from the hills well before it became a cemetery. Perhaps the land was sacred to the Seneca tribes? Luckily, there's a local author who's written a bunch about the haunted places around my area...more cemetery stories to come! w00t.gif
