...and long!
AROCES
At least 20 feet long. Is that Danny DeVito in the green shirt???

Yeah, that one is big but....

"A monster python which is nearly 15m long has been caught in Indonesia.
It weighs 447 kg and could slither into the record books if it's proved to be the biggest snake ever caught. Villagers say they captured the beast in the wild and now hundreds of people are visiting it at a zoo in Java, on the main island of the country. The local newspaper is reporting that the snake, which was only recently put on public display, eats three or four dogs a month. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the longest ever captured snake to be 9.75m and the heaviest to be 182 kg so if confirmed, this python would be the biggest snake ever kept in captivity."

robbie is correct..the snake was heavily exagurated.

it is big, but isn't the largest anaconda caught over 30 ft long and over 200 lbs ( just a guesd )
Mal X
the distance due to 9 people standing side by side is about 20ft, but the snake is not stretched right out; so its about 24ft long, it looks about 11 to 12 inches wide....that Anaconda an extra 10ft longer would be enormous, roughly 34ft

Fawcett's famous sighting was this same width, but the snake was 60ft long w00t.gif so you can see he made a big mistake............somewhere!

this next photo, is a shorter Anaconda; about 18ft.

unfortunately there are no photos of an Anaconda at 30ft long; let alone larger! my guess is that 30+ ft is extremely rare and only in the most remote areas; maximum size being about 40ft.

the 60 to 100 footer is maybe a close relative of the Anaconda..... a total exaggeration...or extinct...or very rare indeed!
~Onyx~
Luckily, I don't have a sleeping bag BIG ENOUGH for that land serpent to climb into........do you think that snake could take-on a bear?

I agree that about 40 feet would be the max on an andaconda.

Is it even possible for snakes that large to be able to live, hunt and survive? I once read somewhere that some tribe in Africa saw one that was like 140 ft. They either exaggerated like hell, or they lied.

Nope...A snake that large would suffocate on land, or easily fall prey. They can't grow that big.

it wont be 10M long, because that's 32.8ft and that's a World Record for a Burmese Python;
it'll be about 26ft long.

there are many Anaconda sightings of about 100ft long, probably all Bull****; but who knows!
because my worry is that there are so many and most of these aren't on the web.

now if we say the max for an Anaconda is about 40ft, that'll be a bloody huge snake and at least 8 times the bulk of that 24 footer above, i expect this is being mistaken for a snake far bigger.

but a 100 foot anaconda will be about 32'' wide and have a head about 19'' wide, this colossal bulk is virtually impossible to imagine in real life!

only on another planet, where a similar ``Amazon jungle`` was the size of the entire planet.
Bill Hill

That there is one mighty big snake.. yes sir..
capoeiranger
The actual length of the biggest snake that was caught in Indonesia is actually 8m long! This is the true length.

My uncle went with the expedition team that discover the snake. His name was Bramantyo. You can check his name on the team member that discover this giant snake. He was a survival specialist and a member of the BBC Science.

I found this website after searching google for "python burma 15m java zoo". This was the statement i was led too. The only other confirmation of a news report i saw on normal tv news over a year ago. there was a still picture with the report of the snake with its keeper and it was so immense it looked like a hoax. I would point out that 15m is near to 50ft with 32ft being the only authenticated figure I can find. I am amazed that the snaked has not become the subject of much investigation given that only 4 or so years ago as much as $1,000,000 was offered for any live snake over 30ft. It eats a bull at each sitting. remarkably no other report has appeared and even the mad aussie (recently deceased) seems never to have heard of it. Any more info anyone?
Shadow Dweller
any snake that is longer than i am tall, i probably wouldn't be holding or, for that matter anywhere near the thing.

When officially measured, the snake was only 26 feet long.

Now that it is in captivity, and if fed very well, in a few years it could just might beat the current record.

Because of the cost of feeding a large snake, most in zoos and private collections are usually underfed. If that snake is young for its size, it could be made into a "monster" if heavily fed. 3 dogs a month is a good start.

It's a good possibility, if the snake doesn't sucumb to something, like disease.

Well, it's still there, apparently. Steve Irwin and other your-regular-tv-snake-and-crocodile-hunting-freak did not get informed, as this is merely a minor expedition from the BBC. The sanke was accidentally caught, not by purpose, as the team actually films the wildlife of Celebes (Sulawesi).

I am actually surprised this snake has not received more attention, but then again it is not big enough yet to be considered extraorinary. I have no doubt that Steve Irwin, and the other reptile wrangling TV personalities weren't interested in it, but it was probably revealed that it wasn't as big as first claimed, before they made the expense to go there.

From the original story I thought it was in a small village and not the city. If it had been so large I would imagine the village keeping it, as it would bring tourist dollars there.

Actually it stands a better chance than most big snakes becasue it is left in essentially a natural enviroment. ( I rerember a chain link cage in the first story). Most tropical snakes in captivity die prematurely becasue of enviromental failures in their artificial habitats, too cold for their survival.
~Onyx~
Just out of curiousity, how long might it take for a snake of that size(left in a semi-natural environment), eating well, to grow into a record-breaking size?
