There has been many posts and threads asking what a Christian is but I do not remember anything about what is a Christian Extremist.

What are the differences between the two and where is the point that must be crossed before one is considered an extremist?

Yes, using force.
For example, I think that allowing liquor sales on every day except for Sunday is an example of extremism.
What do you think?
Irish
An extremist is one who has an opinion yet is unwilling to listen to others unless it matches theirs.
There is nothing wrong with not giving your opinion, and it only an opinion until some one perceives it as imposing personal beliefs. Therein lays the problem. It is perfectly natural in conversation to share ones experience because it brought them joy and happiness and they may truly want you to have the same experience. Some people however are just plain bull headed and will not entertain others experience nor listen to them and that goes for religious people and atheist alike.

Extremists: they who believe only they are right and are happy to kill others to prove it.

The Catholic Church/Anglican Church were Christian extremists. If another group of Christians or non-Christians disagreed with them they were happy to kill them to prove themselves right.

Why do you think it is a bad example?
I think it is an excellent one.
There is no reason for restrictions on Sunday any more so than any other day of the week.
It is a purely religious law being enforced by the government.
Logic seems to dictate that liquor sales closed at noon on both Saturday and Sunday would decrease fatalities from weekend drunk driving at night.

When a Christian believes that they have the right to force non-Christians to live as Christians under their interpretation of religious laws enforced by the government.

Sounds good to me. Also not just enforced by govt but enforced by them also (abortion clinic bombings).

The alcohol thing... it wasn't a govt. decree, it was a vote by the people. Maybe there was a religious reason for them to vote that way, but that's democracy. Aside from that, I understand the point, and it is a good one (leaving out the democracy part, if it were a decree by a religious political leader or religious judge and the people had no choice in the matter)

Looking at it from another perspective, All religious can be deemed extremeist if I want to paint it that way. Depending how to paint it, just about any opinion can be twisted to show extremeism. Talk long enough you'll either dig yourself a hole, or just run around in circles with wordplay.

There is no such thing as normal life. Just life. One man's extremeist... like the ones that call for all religious to be eliminated.

Edit: Forgot to add, not all extremeism imo is bad. I may be extreme for shunning a child molester for his beliefs, or an arsonist, or some other things... but I really don't care. Intolerance isn't a bad thing at all times. Diversity isn't a good thing at all times. etc...
Tangerine Sheri
An extremeist anything is unwilling to understand any other persepctive other than their own, who sees a belef structure as 'word' other than a tool for growth and self introspection....one who uses fear to bridge diversity, one who advocates violence instead of love as a solution for conflict...One who shuns others for not beleiving as they do most often becasue they simply don't understand nor try too. or are afraid too......these are examples of extremism.....anyone who calls any part of creation unwhole and unworthy and unlovaeable and unexceptable in anythings eyes is extreme too me......

An activist for example like Ghandi was an extremist all activists are. They will hold sign, shout slogans or even starve themselves.

Extremism like terrorism have blurred lines.

When a journalist is on the front lines covering a war they are taking 'extreme' measures to show you what's going on.

Infact I would go so far as to say that every person is an extremist. If it were necisary we would all take extreme measures. Some people consider it extreme to spank a child does that make those who spank their children extremists?

Extremism like terrorism is undefinable to put it simply. Both share the trait of simply being points of view from one person to the next or groups of people to the next.

Extremism would be doing, saying or even thinking something someone thought extreme. If you do something you would'nt consider extreme but someone else does then by implication you are an extremist.

Thanks for posting this interesting thread zandore. Lately, i was argueing about people coming here and acted as trolls and there is no doubt that many of them were Christian Extremists in Paranormal section. I realized that Christian Extremists normally jumped to the conclusion because of their Bible extreme view on Paranormal so thats why many of them tended to be a troll and making false statements as well as jumping to conclusion. The best way for them to defend is to re-identify themselve and claiming to be non-Christian and thats what really bugs me. Ive met them many times on this forum for more than 2 months. Of course, Ordinary Christians can be spiritual and believer but religious extremists normally put these religious matters into the discussion. Extremists make good discussion becomes non-intellectual discussion and making religious arguments like repeating a Christian Bible extreme phrase (which already dismissed the possible existence of spirits) or dismissing the theory of spirits and blaming on demons because of their religion. This would eventually ruin the thread and it could be considered as trolling. They dismissed it but they still registered onto this forum as a troll. They are not either good skeptic or believer but a religious extremist. They can be religious extremist as long as they don't bug people online. You cannot even have an intellectual discussion with them since they believed in 1 Bible phrase that completely dismissed the paranormal discussion and the existence of spirits. Maybe it is some kind of religious propaganda. I always assumed them to be trolls and less spiritual for holding non-spiritual belief. I am sorry if this sounded offensive but i am not really talking about ordinary spiritual Christians. This is what their Bible phrase said: "the afterlife leave no room for ghosts and hauntings, so when something supernatural happens it has to be the "devil" or nothing" The Christian Bible. How can someone be spiritual for holding non-spiritual belief like this Bible phrase?
I called them "Christian Extremists" or "Religious Extremists" or sometimes trolls since they were eventually trolling or making false statements about paranormal as well as concerning with religion's extremeness. This is the reason why i got soooooo mad in the other section of the Forum especially when i had to talk to someone who interferes discussion with this Christian's religious extreme view. angry.gif

Extremism occurs when someone like us holds on to extreme view on certain things and cannot accept the counter-argument in the debate simply because they are religious extremists. It also occurs when someone puts religious matters into their daily lifestyle and also into discussion or debate. Sometimes, it is worse, violence or action was also part of their religious extreme view like "Al Quaeda", "if other Muslims die then it is God's will" OR "Suicide bombers would become Martyres and they would go directly to heaven". Another example: "I don't eat pork because my bible said so" (thats extremism) OR "I cannot dress the way I like because my religion said so" (Religion interferring with the way I dress) OR "I dismissed the possible existence of ghosts because my bible quoted: "the afterlife leave no room for ghosts and hauntings, so when something supernatural happens it has to be the "devil" or nothing" The Christian Bible". These are examples of extremism. devil.gif

Ordinary Christians were the one who are more spiritual and do not necessarily have this view. Many ordinary Christians goes to cemetery to worship the spirits of their deceased family members and dismissed the Bible's extreme view about afterlife and spirits/ghosts. innocent.gif

Please, i am begging to those extremists who were encouraged to be skeptics by their religion's extreme phrase, please don't completey dismiss the existence of spirits in Paranormal section and please stop trolling and be more spiritual as well as have some respect for the deaths. innocent.gif "Oh Lord, please give room for spirits' existence and let them be respected and worship by the livings so they could be bless and go to heaven. Amen."

Oh my... is all i can say after watching that blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

That was umm quite educational for me as i have never come across an extremist face to face before and oh crikey that woman was scarey, vile, vulgar, just plain awful.....

I felt so sorry for her children, did you see their faces crying.gif esp the youngster, poor wee thing was confused and scared by her mothers hysterics. Even the film crew were sh***** it grin2.gif

I really think this woman has mental issues. But all to often extremists are able to use religion to hide behind while they project their foul and judgemental behaviour.

I found it quite ironic that she was declaring everyone dark and from the dark side if they didn't believe in jesus while she was putting on a grand negitive display herself, if anyone was 'dark' it was HER! blink.gif

I found it quite funny how they ended it with the text saying she took the money to have her gastric bypass rolleyes.gif Well I guess she lucky, i thought the way she was working her self up she may drop dead from a heart attack on the spot!

I think one of the best analogies I've heard to describe the condition was in 2001; if you want to define an religious extremist, just remember that extremists are what hijacked airliners on September 11 and flew them into buildings.

They are what strap bombs to men and women that walk into crowds of innocence, because they imagine it is god's will. They are that headline that describes the terrorist that blew up or attempted to detonate, a bomb in abortion clinics, or shot a doctor that performs abortions. They are those pharmacists that refuse to fill "morning after pill" prescriptions, because that pharmaceutical formula conflicts with their religious faith. They are those that believe it is god's will to murder women, or wives, because they displease the man/husband, that is the head of household or superior authority in their life.
They are what seeks , in this country (U.S.) to secede from the Union so as to establish a christian nation, governed as a theocracy. (I remember when the zealot Pat Buchanan ran for President years ago. Two points in his campaign really said a lot for his future vision of America. Were he to be elected President he said he would support legislation that made "unrepentant" homosexuality and abortion, a death penalty offense! wacko.gif )

Extremists of any stripe, christian or otherwise, are those that believe the whole world must comply to one philosophy or die. They're terrorists that stand in the shadow of a cross, Mecca, etc... Advocating slaughter in the name of a higher powers authority, claiming the after effects would be peace. That is after they dig the graves for all those they murdered, that weren't just like "them". ph34r.gif What a concept! World peace=kill 'em all! blink.gif )
Grandtheftcow
A lot of members seem to be taking the definition the.. well extreme.

From my perspective a Christian is just a person who believes in a god and attends a weekly service no matter what denomination they belong to. The extremists in that group are the ones who believe in the literal interpretation of the Bible from the creation story of Genesis to the acid trip of revelations. These are the kind of people who piss and moan over "secular morals" and "evilution" being taught in school. They shield their children from ideas that may conflict with their views and may even go as far as home schooling.

You don't need to kill to be an extremist.
Paranoid Android
Remember - extremists are called "EXTREME-ists" because their actions don't reflect those of the average *insert belief/worldview here*

Extremists, whether they be Christian, Muslim, Atheist, Buddhist, or any other belief structure you care to name, are those that nurture the values of hate and discrimination over love and acceptance. This takes many forms. Since the thread topic was specific to Christians, I'll answer specifically for Christians. The principles can be applied to any other Faith (or lack of Faith) also. A "normal" Christian may believe they are right, and they may share that belief with others. An extremist Christian forces that belief onto others, with violence if necessary.

That's as how I see it thumbsup.gif

edit: after seeing that video, I can safely say you have an example of religious extremism going on.

And in Australia, shops open at 9am, you can get your early mornin' hit of whiskey if you so wish. No such rule prohibiting alcohol sales over here clap.gif
Mr Slayer
In my eyes religious extremism, both Christian and Muslim alike, starts when a strong belief in a Almighty Deity, completely blind and lacking of any possible criticism is pounding in a Believer's heart.

Meaning extremism counts sooner than guns and shouting entering the picture.
