I purchased a home from a builder 9 yrs ago. We are the only family that has lived in this house. We are hearing footsteps in our attic and scraping sounds from the same area. We have checked for animals, and found none, nor did we find any holes or other means of exterior access.
Could this be a haunting by my brother who committed suicide 7 yrs ago (not in this house)? We have felt his spirit in flashes of white and green light several times since his death (in this house).

Have you always heard it or are you hearing it for the first time?

You have felt his spirit flashes in your new house? but he(your brother) did not die in the new house....is that correct? If that is the case, you can't be sure what it is. Your best bet is to localize the noises to a certain area and see if you can video tape the phenomenon...that will tell you for sure if you are dealing with something mundane or paranormal in nature...there is no need to jump to conclusions and assume anything without exlporing all of your options.

Certain spirits can be attached to the land aswell, especially if another structure was standing where your house is now built.
Has this spirit done anything to remind you of your brother? It's common for spirits of our loved ones to send us messages to remind us that it is them. For example: a scent associated with that person, this individual visiting you in dreams, something of that belongs to them constantly showing up etc.

Spirits are said to follow some objects around as well as to just stay fixed to land or houses.
Furniture is an example.

Yes of course a new house can be haunted. Its not always the house, its also area history. Say the house was built on what used to be a grave yard, or some sort of battle or a traumatic accident down the road or near the house. Go to your local library, research articles on the area around your house, always ask questions of the staff there, they know where to look, dont feel weird trust me....they will love to hear what you have going on. Ghosts frequent places due to rememberance, like we have flashbacks if that makes any sense. If they were in that area and something happened that is worth remembering, not even death, then yeah, you may receive activity. Make a journal of everything that goes on, time, dates, activity, smell, anything and everything. Best of luck

Like what has been said already, could be the land (history or ley/earth lines/underground springs) could even be connected to the builder or the materials used to build the house if they came from another structure, or could just be a random spirit. Many possibilities if you are looking for a paranormal reason.

As Anvil suggested and me to add on, Spirits can roam as they please. Like us they can choose where to go.

Sandfin,
Yes it very well could be your brother. (Unfortuately). Sadly, people who committ suicide often become earthbound. He may need your help to cross over. You might want to get a Medium to do this. Or if you would like to try yourself, send me a PM and I will tell you.
Wishing you and your brother Peace.

What is a Spirit Flash?
My husband, daughter and I all see bright flashes of light, almost like shooting stars, from time to time ithroughout the house. They are usually light green to yellow, or white. They last only a brief second, but after they slice thru a room, we all get a strange feeling...like we are not the only ones in the room.

Now, this makes sense. My home is part of a subdivion that was built on a farm->former revolutionary war site. Our entire town has lots of revolutionary war graves, and the town govt and developer moved 20 slave graves from the farm to the town cemetary just last fall. Very interesting. Thanks for the research idea.

It could be possible. I mean the house doesn't have to be old to be haunted. It could been the land that is haunted. Like another old home stood there & something happened there.

Or something else could have happened to the land in the past before it was built.

Not a problem. Furthermore, I think it is possible that your brother is the one lurking in the shadows, but he may not be the only one. A lot of studies suggest that spirits who roam, do not roam alone. If he is earthbound, more than likely with the land history, he has company.

spirits can also attach themselves to people. It is not unheard of for people to move from a home thought to be haunted only to find that the spirit(s) followed them to their new home.

I remember years ago seeing on tv about a haunted house.
It was on the show "That's Amazing" I believe and it happend in the 1980s.
These people out in California had bought a new home. They noticed things would disappear, odd noises, etc. So what they did was set up a video camera in the house.
They caught on tape this dark human shaped shadow. You could see it moving in the house and it opening kitchen cabinets, etc. Then the next thing you see is the shadow moving toward the camera and then the picture goes blank.
No this is no urban legend, this was real.
I believe they said the family decided to sell the house and i assume the tape was returned to them or is property of ABC since that is the network the show aired on. Never forgot that.

I agree with what the others have said.
I would stress a few more things in addition.
Don't be too quick to rule out animals. They can get in through holes and cracks you would never see. Setting up webcams in the attic might help. Also, exterminators know exactly what signs to look for. I do not know if there is any reason for your brother or anyone to want to walk around in the attic. If not, it would make me want to look for squirrels or mice.
Also, a ghost needn't haunt the place where he died. In fact, I think he is more likely to haunt someplace more positive-- like the family home.
In addition to the suggestions about research and so on, I'd suggest getting a good trance medium to come into the house, "cold"-- i.e., without his or her knowing anything about the house or family beforehand, not even the address or last name. This, as far as I know, is the only way to get checkable information about what may or may not be going on spiritually in a location. (BTW, if someone knows another way, please share.)
Good luck and please update us.
