I got a virus, Alcra, and no matter what I do, I can't get rid of it.

Can someone please help me.
Episteme
Viruses are tricky business. What have you done so far to try to remove it? What kind of antivirus software are you running? Is the antivirus software up to date? Alcra can be a pain and it doesn't help that there is more than one variant of the virus. It would help if you knew what variant of Alcra you had. Geeks to go has a helpful tool you can find here. Note that it won't remove the virus but it may help you along if you are getting close.
Tillghast
It's Alcra F. I'm running Norton and Spy Sweeper. I have scanned using both and nothing has turned up. I also keep getting the Virus pop up over and over.

Help me.

You can format your computer and re-install windows.

I seem to have better luck (?) with McAfee than when I had Norton.
Episteme
Is the Norton up to date? You say you're getting a pop up, what is giving you the pop up? If norton is coming up with nothing then what is telling you that you have the virus? Did you try downloading the utility I linked?

Sorry but can't help much without all the questions being answered. Pyrokinetic_1 might have the best solution in this case. Sometimes a reformat and reloading windows is much easier than going through the 1,001 steps to remove some of the peskier viruses sad.gif It may sound intimidating but it's a pretty easy process, especially if you can find all your systems disks that came with the computer.

Hold on cowboy.... That's a last resort.

Tel, try starting in safe mode, search for the virus and then delete the bugger.

That's the easiest way to do it.
Not unless you want to learn something like finding the virus then deleting
it from your system file...oppps...you can't delete system file, now you have
to find it on your registry and delete it there. Now, when you done something wrong
on your registry...you might have to buy new computer.
Heck ! what i'm talking about ?
Oh yeah ! i kicked Norton too.

Well to answer the question. Norton keeps giving me the pop up that I have a virus. And everything is going really slow, and I can't log onto Steam or play any games.

Formating is a last resort.

Formating is a last resort.
Agreed and then ONLY if you know what you are doing!

Ahhhh mmk.. Norton angry.gif

Norton: You have a virus.
You: <scan> <update Norton> <scan>
Norton: You don't got no stinking virus!
You: Phew!!
Norton: (You have a virus)
You: AHHHHHH!!!!!! <BANG> <CRASH>
Norton: (Please send us more money)

Kratos, good idea. Try it out in safe mode. I'm not one for mixing antivirus but another option is to temporarily download a free virus checker like AVG just to see if it can pick it up and remove what Norton isn't. Just be sure to disable norton while running AVG and remove AVG when you're done.

I can see both sides of the argument for wanting to reformat and wanting to avoid it. If you don't have your system disks, or if you just have plain windows XP disks with no drivers disks, I'd try to remove it awhile longer. If you have an emachine or dell or some other brand that gives you a nifty little disk with XP and all the drivers that go with your system then it pretty much loads itself (minus 4+ hours of downloading XP updates); I'd reload without a second thought.

Before you try to reformat....check up on what all is involved first.

one other thing,is your fire wall switched on?A friend told me not to use the XP firewall because its the easiest one for the hackers to get round.Zonealarm does a good one which is free to download and you can set it up to always notify you when a program wants to access the internet and vice versa,it also makes your pc invisable to on line hackers.not to bad for a freebee!

It is my opinion that Norton sucks and that McAffee rules!
Please Explain
Ye, Norton sucks and i go for cheaper one which is more better.

Norton is a huge memory hog. I use Avira for viruses and ZoneAlarm for fire wall.
