Hey all,
As the title states my monitor seems to blink now after my PC has finished booting up windows and runs rather slow. I recently did a virus scan and removed the rather harmless puper virus but found nothing else. It doesn't seem to have a pattern associated to it...sometimes it blinks every 15 seconds...then it will stop and only blink when I go to open a page, folder, program, etc.
Anyone know what the heck is wrong it?

The little light blinks, or the screen? If its the screen, maybe your monitors old and you need a new one, I got a 17" flatscreen for about £27

It's the monitor...it's a 15" LCD... little over two years old.

If the PC is behaving slowly it isn't your monitor that's causing the problem, can you give a little more detail on the problem

you have access to another monitor you could plug in, see if it happens on that monitor too ?, that'd tell you if it was the monitor on the blink or if its to do with the pc itself.

I'll compile a more detailed description and test another monitor when I get home tonight....

Just an afterthought, but have you tried booting in safe mode? (Just tap the F8 button before windows begins to start up) If it's a driver or some other issue it might not do it in safe mode. Maybe even boot to MS DOS prompt, though it would be harder to see with that ugly black background... <shrugs>

Tried safe mode, no luck. I took it into the shop that built it, I have lifetime free service on it and they should be calling me later today for the diagnostic...

Well, I fried my graphics card....guess the engine seized up on the fan and it burned out from there...ah well.... $59.99 at futureshop come tuesday and I'll have a new GC to throw in it.

512mb!! I think I drooled on your link
Ok I have a question maybe you can answer... I understand a little about bottlenecking the FSB/CPU/RAM and all that and how it relates to the clock speed of the video memory. But the clock speed of that video card is "Dual 400mhz". Now say you had a 400mhz FSB, would that video card be bottlenecked? Im guessing it just has dual clocks or something and it would run at full speed? That stuff confuses me.. you uber gamers!
Nice card, nice price! If my car wasn't in the shop I'd be awful tempted...

*Wipes the drool away*
Just duel clocks..bottlenecking can cause undesired heat...

Ok I had never heard of the dual clocks so wanted to make sure it wasn't jumped up to 800mhz or something like that. I would like to hear how it does, it is on my wish list for my hubby's pc. If I remember right (it was awhile ago I checked) his FSB is 600mhz and I'm pretty sure the CPU and Ram are pretty close to that. He doesn't do anything too serious, Everquest, Civ4, and he'll get a new game now and then. Picking up my car from the shop tomorrow, if the bill isn't too astronomical I'll be awaiting your review

I checked my card...it is at 800MHZ. Did you end up getting him one?

Nope not yet. Did you get the dual 400mhz clock or the one linked now? It looks like the first one is not on sale anymore, but still a deal.
I will have to look up his info just to be
sure on his FSB speed. I know the ram and everything I got for it was up to par... I am wondering if just a teensy weensy bit of bottlenecking would hurt too much, as long as I got a nice big fan or two?

I'd recommend against it..... the heat isn't really worth the little bit of extra performance. I got the one in the new link....now I just need 2 gigs of ram as opposed to 512 and I'm all good

Well he's starting a couple weeks of overtime at work so it looks like I have some time to shop. I realized the first one you linked (dual 400mhz clocks) is PCI express though it didn't say that except in small print on the very bottom of the page

I've only been able to find a couple 512mb that aren't PCI express and I'm wondering if that info was just omitted from the websites... might just have to settle for a 256mb. Then again the PCI express are flooding the market and I can get a compliant motherboard for a decent price. I think I could do all that for around $250 or a bit less - if our supplier has some good in stock mobos... I will have to think about it, but the way the market is going that just might be the better way to go, nay?

The market isn't just leaning towards PCIX.... it's fallen right into and embraced it
