Why the national distinction? Most new music sucks, regardless of what country vomited them out.

Not all American music sucks, just the Music that is massed produced. It is all about the $$bucks$$.
Tom Waits is from the US, and he not only makes great music, but he has managed to keep his integrity threw out the years while doing so.

That's pretty ignorant. I've yet to see any half-way decent bands come from England. There are a LOT of good new American bands. You just have to dig beneath the mainstream crap that is constantly shoved down everyone's throats.

Well My Chemical Romance barely qualifies as music. But yes, I agree. Most new music does suck in general. There are, of course, exceptions. One need only look so far as Ween and the Moistboyz to realize that the rock still does flow.

IMO thats very true, i'm sorry to anyone else on here who like "bands" Such as my chemical romance, the used, fall out boy etc but I can't stand it, a couple of years ago In my hometown we had a varied music scene consisting of most types of music but around the year 2004 that all changed. Guess what we have now... Emo/Screamo/Punk-rock. no.gif

All of the kids look like clones because they have the same hair styles (You know the one i mean that god forsaken Emo fringe!, tight trousers, shoes.

Pretty much anything MTV approves of is not worth a dime.

An entire country forming an opinion of all American music because of a single band. I'm not sure who I should be more upset with - MCR for thinking anyone but emorific American teenagers would enjoy them, or England for being so unfair. sad.gif

Perfect Imperfection
I'm sorry but in general I hate all new American music too. I think I just don't get it. At all! But what a few of the Americans have said on this thread is pretty ignorant, very quick to say how bad english music is but half of them don't even seem to have a clue what they're talking about.
I haven't a problem with old school American music, Metallica, Skid Row, Motley Crue etc it's just the likes of MCR, Fall Out Boy, bands like that are coming out of America and giving their music a bad name, whch I'm sure a lot of it isn't. unfortunately it doesn't reach us due to MTV and what they think will sell regardless of how good it is.

Britain is not England.

Britain is a region of North-western Europe which contains 2 major islands and about 800 smaller islands which make up Scotland, Wales, Ireland, North Ireland and England (although more often than not its just used informally to refer to the UK, which includes all of them except for the Rep. of Ireland).

England (which the topic is in reference too) is only a single country in the region of Britain, it does not make up all of it. Given that your from the UK, you should really have known this.

I've seen a TON of bands I had no interest in seeing, and even bands I hate...just because they were opening for bands I WANTED to see. I had to sit through Mudvayne, Deftones, Linkin Park, and Limp Bizkit before I could see Metallica...I had to see The Rye Coalition when I wanted to see Turbonegro and Queens of the Stone Age...and TONIGHT I have to see The Magic Numbers, Sonic Youth, and the Flaming Lips(UGH I HATE THEM SO MUCH) because I want to see Ween.

If I can get close enough to nail that stupid Flaming Lips singer right in the balls with a bottle, you can believe you'll be hearing about that on the news.

To the topic i can only say : It's a matter of taste common. I love EELS badly.

There is actually still a very interesting music scene going on beneath all the MTV crap, you just have to look a little harder original.gif

But throwing stuff at a band is just totally lame. Nomatter what.

Actually, happily, no, I'm not seeing them anymore. I realized they come on after Ween, so I can just leave when Ween finishes up. I hate the Flaming Lips. They're a prop band. Ween is a rock band. I like rock bands. I especially hate their stupid hipster singer. Every other band at the fair allows taping, but the Flaming Lips got taping prohibited for the show. I can only assume, after seeing their setlists from their past tour, that it's because if you've heard one show, you've heard them all. They NEVER vary their setlists. Ever. They're LAME.

Also, Linkin Park is also lame and has always been lame.

And, no, no, NO, emo does NOT rule. Half that "scene" is looking the part. It's a prepackaged image that "rebels" adopt in order to "go against the grain," completely ignoring the fact that they're completely being manipulated by the record industry and what the record industry wants them to think/act like/dress like.

My friend put it best when he said something to the effect of "I fear for the wars of tomorrow. Our enemies in the Middle East are growing up amidst horrible war and destruction everyday, and the people who would be our soldiers are crying because their girlfriend of three weeks broke up with them and life is no longer worth living."

Call me close minded or whatever, but nothing could be farther from the truth. I just HATE that whole "counterculture" SO much, they are SO lame, and they don't even realize that in trying to rebel against "the man," they're supporting "the man" in every conceivable fashion.

I HATE IT.

Guess it's a matter of taste, i dig how they play with synth sounds in a different and abstract way. It's the kind of show or music you just have to have a little spliff before listening too though tongue.gif

But i've got different musictastes for different buzzes wink2.gif

You're not close minded, you're spot on.

But then again some people just enjoy trying different lifestyles in life and who can blame em, i mean it's hard to not be persuaded and manipulated in todays salesworld. It requires a bit of brainpower and strenght to deny it or stand above it.

Personally, I think there are some GREAT American bands. The first offering this year from Wolves in the Throne room was phenomenal. Agalloch has just released their greatest album to date. The Lord Weird Slough Feg has consistently released one golden collection of tunes after another. Epoch of Unlight continues to impress me. Xasthur and Leviathan have always delivered chillingly eerie, yet inspiring material.

Even going back earlier, Acid Bath put out two of the best CDs I've ever heard before splitting up. Well, I could provide examples ad nauseam, but my point is that with a bit of digging America, or any country for that matter, hosts a plethora of great bands worth checking out.

Not trying to be anal or anything, but Emo and Goth are completely different subcultures and styles, though they do share similar roots. Goth branched off from punk in the early 80's, notable bands being Bauhaus, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Cure. It took on a slightly dreary tone heavily laden with synth melodies (what didn't in the 80's?). Emo, meaning "emotive hardcore" was a subdivision of hardcore punk music that was focused primarily around the Washington D.C. scene and included bands like Rites of Spring and The Meatpackers.

I have no idea why the media recently chose to start bastarding terms like "goth", "emo", and "hardcore", but I feel that people should know that real fans of these genres have to hang their heads every time a source of media reports genres as if they're only ways of marketing... oh wait, they are to them.

Again, not criticizing anyones knowledge, just trying to help educate people.
