Woman allegedly shoots husband after pet chicken is shot

Associated Press
Sept. 6, 2006 10:21 AM

CHESHIRE, Ore. - A woman is accused of shooting her husband after he shot her pet chicken.

The Eugene-Register Guard reports Mary Kay Gray has been jailed on felony assault charges. Her husband, Stanley Gray, is recovering from a gunshot wound to the shoulder. The chicken died at the scene.

Lane County sheriff's Sergeant Clint Riley says the couple had been working around their yard and drinking on Labor Day. They got into an argument after Stanley Gray shot the chicken with a 44-caliber handgun.

Police don't know if the shooting was intentional or an accident. Riley says "it depends on who you ask."

But sheriff's deputies say Gray shot her husband with a 22-caliber rifle in an apparent act of retaliation.

Except it sounds like it was more a game of husband vs wife, with the chicken as an innocent bystander. sad.gif

She could argue he was threatening to shoot the chicken and in order to save the life of her pet she shot him in a self-defense, which would be a justified shooting.

If not, meh, it's only a .22 round in his shoulder. tongue.gif I'd let her plead temp. insanity in the court of Kratos for the loss of her pet.

I agree, pets are like children to many people and right or wrong people react with the same kind of instincts when it comes to their pets.

I have a lot of deer on my land and it is one of my favorite things about where I live. I put food out that they like and the kind of grass i have the love to munch on. It is an amazing thing to be able to sit on my deck and having deer wander by close enough to pets as the eat.

Hunting is something that a lot of people do up here, it is something that I don't understand and disagree with, but it is legal so it is out of my hands. I have had people trying to sneak onto my land with rifles trying to shoot deer on my land in front of my house. Safety issues aside I made it very clear to them(it has happened more than once) that if they wish to tresspass on my land and shoot near my house at deer then I will assume that they are hostile towards me and react accordingly. By shooting. Alot. Accurately.

Needless to say I don't get many tresspassers anymore.

Well, I do agree with you there. I hate the guys that go out during deer season looking for a big buck. I'm also not a great fan of guys that shoot fawns/first year deer that aren't even full grown.

I wouldn't want you shooting at me either... tongue.gif Least they can take a warning.

Why? Hunting is a great sport. It builds conservation in people, just like angling.

It's a test for man, and a way to greater understand the outdoors.

I was taught from a kid to respect life when hunting. Respect nature, not treat it as some kind of twisted ego game. I go for the meat, that's my prize. I forgot to mention, I really don't mind the sports guy that go for a buck rack if they sign up for the charity program to donate the meat. Least then the animal isn't going to waste.

Even sport hunting is good on many account...Many big-game hunters are some of the best conservation-minded common people around. Hunting and Fishing build a respect for nature.

My uncle also only goes for meat.

ohmy.gif How about the ladies? tongue.gif I just started hunting again a few years ago and I'm a hell-of-a shot (not to brag too much). I hunted last season but didn't even shoot except for my with my camera. When I hunt I usually put in about 25 hours before I even take a shot and I don't miss. My dad and I field dress the deer ourselves and have it processed by a relative. We donate almost half the meat and the entire pelt and keep the rest for our own.

My land is in a county that handed out additional deer tags the last two years because population had become a serious problem. I guess the deer were tired of eating all the corn grown by local farmers because they are wondering into small towns and onto highways causing damage to personal property and injury or death to both humans and deer.

I would hate to see the deer disappear from Indiana like they did in the late 60's and early to late 70's and since one of my main concerns is animal conservation I don't have a problem shooting a deer. My biggest fear would be that my slug would hit the deer in a non lethal area and get away only to bleed to death or to be ripped up by a coyote. Good thing I don't miss.

And no, Kratos, I don't hunt for the buck with the trophy rack. The meat is better from a doe in my opinion. original.gif

What respect is there to shoot an animal simply for a set of antlers or a mount for your den?

Yeah, that's what I've found as well. Though, I'm not going to pass up a buck to hopefully get a doe. Whatever the 'verse puts in front of me is fine. wink2.gif Last year I missed a doe due to stupidity, fired too soon... Forgot to lead. If they were to use a bowie knife to hunt for deer, that would be sporting and at least give the deer a chance to defend themselves. I could at least say it is a fair fight.

Shooting a deer from out of sight, smell, and sound from hundreds of yards away is hardly as sport. it is no more sport than using my remote control to change the channel on my TV.

I have seen the pain inflicted in humans that are shot, I can only imagine it is the same for animals as they feel pain too, and often the shot animal doesn't die quickly. It is one thing if it is for self preservation; I don't mind shooting criminals intent on harming me or my family or my belongings. Let's say you are hiking and a cougar comes after you- I can understand killing in that situation. Even killing a coyote who is going after your pets, but to shoot a deer/elk/bear/whatever that has no interest in you and is simply looking to munch on some grass is not sporting regardless of how hunters try to paint it.

Killing something that is a peaceful creature that does nothing to inflict harm on you is just not right in my opinion. Killing for fun/pleasure is not good for you.

laugh.gif No, not a muzzle loader... Oh man...that would have been awful. I believe he was firing a single shot 20 gauge, so he fired his first round then went for his pocket to shove another shell in and...well...from what I was told he clicked it back into place, raised went to fire...squeezed...nothing...snapped it back open and the chapstick hit the snow. laugh.gif

Can I run down this list in turn?

Steak..

Coat..

Two racks of ribs..

Host to Vermin..

Lucky Key-chain..
thumbsup.gif

Just kidding..Frankly; I know very few people who hunt just for the thrill of killing something..Actually I've never met any.
And nobody I've ever knew likes to shoot baby versions of anything..
I guess the bottom line for me is that I get hungry and venison tastes good..
One deer can last a lot longer than a package of hamburger and some hot dogs; so in the end it saves on the grocery bill too..

What respect there is when you mount a tropht fish? Just because you go for sport doesn't mean you don't respect wildlife...I have found out that people who hunt for sport are on average more concerned for the wildlife than people that hunt to sustain or such.

Hunting for sport or pleasure is BAD. May those who do it burn in ****. These hunters take the best of the pack. How is that good for the pack? If they are supporters of environmental conservation, it's more likely they take that view to preserving their own recreation, rather than preserving the environment for it's own sake. Wild hunters (wolves, bears, cougars, etc) only take the weakest of the pack, thus ensuring the continuation of the strongest and best.

Those who hunt for food, while I don't think I could do it myself, have my respect. At least they have the integrity to go and get their meat the old fashioned way. Those of us who eat meat without hunting merely pick up a package of meat from the grocery store without thinking about where it came from, and what that animal went through prior to death.

And I hope this woman doesn't get any punishment for shooting her husband. It sounds like he shot the chicken out of some sort of revenge.

A woman shot her husband in the back after he killed her pet chicken, the Lane County sheriff's deputies said. Deputies said they were sure that Mary Gray, 58, intended to shoot her husband, Stephen Gray, 43. They weren't certain if the husband meant to fire at the chicken.

"We don't know if it was an accident or if it was on purpose," Sgt. Clint Riley said. "It depends who you ask."

Riley said the couple had been drinking for much of Monday while they did yard work at their rented home in the town northwest of Eugene, and they began arguing after Stephen Gray shot the chicken with a .44-caliber handgun.

Deputies said he was then hit with a shot from a .22-caliber rifle, and is recovering. Mary Gray was arraigned Tuesday on an assault charge.source
