MIAMI -- A Florida diver shot a large grouper with a spear gun then apparently drowned when the fish sped into a hole, entangling the man in the line attached to the spear, investigators said.

The 42-year-old man, whose name was withheld, was free-diving in about 25 feet of water off the lower Florida Keys Saturday and speared a Goliath Grouper, Monroe County Sheriff's Detective Mark Coleman said.

"It looks like the fish wrapped the line attached to the spear around the victim's wrist. The fish then went into a hole in a coral rock, effectively pinning the man to the bottom of the ocean," Coleman said in a news release.

Police divers found the speared fish tightly wedged into the hole, with the man's body still tangled in the line, a sheriff's spokeswoman said.

Goliath Grouper are the largest members of the sea bass family and can weigh hundreds of pounds.

Spear-fishing is a fun sport. But you are not allowed to spearfish Goliath Grouper. They're endangered. The idiot deserves that for poaching.

They are also illegal for fisherman to keep aren't they drogfish? For some years I believe.
I'm not so sure he "deserved it" but the thought did cross my mind..... yes.gif

drogfish? No, Goliath Grouper or Jewfish are the largest grouper. You have to keep speared fish because well, they're speared. The last Great Jewfish speared was by the Art brothers.

He(the person in this article) poached.

Rod and Reel anglers still go after them. I have actually caught one. But it is strictly catch and release. The best place to catch these monsters are the Dry Tortugas, a couple hours west of Key West, Florida.

Makes anything I've caught look like a minnow, how did the guy think he was going to handle it by himself?

Yeaah! Nice one fish!
I'm sure the irony wasn't wasted on the diver either! I'm sure he probably found the situation quite funny, probably laughed his head off, just before he drowned. laugh.gif

I'd like to think his last thoughts were happy thoughts.
