Last month, mass hysteria spread through the capital of Sudan, caused by rumours about foreigners who were roaming the city and shaking men's hands - and thus making men's penises disappear. Police were called to intervene, and the Sudanese health minister even released a statement to calm the public.
The rumours spread rapidly via text messages on cell phones, and it appears that the power of suggestion had men believing that their penises had disappeared. In one instance, a fabric merchant said that a man from a West African tribe came into his shop to buy fabric, but an argument soon developed. At that point the West African apparently shook the store owner's hand powerfully, until the owner felt his penis melt into his body. He became hysterical (understandably, most men would agree), and was taken to hospital.
