Fake.

Even if it was from a credible source, the photos are so vague it's impossible to see anything in any real detail.

Mermaids do not exist.

Impressive article. To my knowledge no one has ever been able to photograph a mermaid so there is nothing to compare it to. The story is believable. Even though my first thought is that they don't exist, who knows? To keep an open mind I will say these pictures has some merit. Which means ok, will file this away at the back of my mind for future reference. It could be true. Hey, this is early in the morning and the thinking process is a little slow. tongue.gif Welcome to UM and thanks for sharing.

would be great if it was true. Where are the other pics he "started snapping away as she broke for the surface"? And what about the ones when she brushed by his leg?

I am a little hesitant to believe mermaid stories because of 2 factors:
1) Why are the sightings always of females? Surely for them to be a viable species, there would need to be males as well. It smacks of the ancient mariners tales told by, suprise suprise, cooped up male sailors away from the fairer sex for too long.
2) Why are we so sure that they would look like beautiful humans to the waist and then irridescent dolphins from the waist down? Is it not safe to assume that a species that lives an entirely aquatic existence would evolve into a more streamline, indeed more AQUATIC apearance? I just found out recently that whales and hippos are related by the same distant ancestor and indeed still share some of the same traits and skeletal similarities not found in other animals. And yet to look at the 2, you would never make the connection. Not to say that mermaids and humans came from the same ancestor (although it would stand to reason they would), but if they did, would they not be vastly different?

I have seen those pics of that mermaid that looks more alien, the one with the fins on its head and a much less "Darryl Hannah"-esque appearance, but Im not to sure about the validity of those either. I would love for there to be merpeople, and Im not saying there arent. I just dont think they look as much like us as we would like them to.
bigdog112
I have always thought about evolution. The fact of evolution is that it takes time. I started thinking about how long animals have bin on earth and I realized that aquatic animals have existed millions of years before mammals.

Why wouldn’t there be an aquatic species that is of human intelligence or even above are own? If there was one they would have to evolve a way to manipulate the world around them and hands and fingers are one of the best evolionary developments you can have for such a task.

just the development of hands would make them look human. The pics are very dark so for all we know it could be a male with long hair.
Raviaan_in_DC
I can believe in the whole mermaid idea. I also believe that they wouldn't be so pretty and innocent though. There is a creepy page of mermaid/man/creatures that is a little bit of proof.. merthings
RollingThunder06
That web site sure puts into prospective what people mean when they say they wouldn't look to much like us and wouldn't be as pretty as most people perceive them to be.
UconnHusky
Those pictures look fake. They are just vague shadows. Those feejee things are just sculptures right?
the Shadamaun
Hair, unless im mistaken, is a mammalian trait. If a mermaid had hair it would more than likely have lungs, so we would probably see them more often as they come up to breathe. They also probably wouldnt live so deep in the ocean because human sized lungs cant hold the kind of capacity that, say, a dolphin or whale could. So that sort of discredits the idea that they have wonderous underwater civilizations. (How great of a house would you have or build if you could only stay in it for 5 minutes at a time?)
Secondly, if they are an advanced species (at least advanced enough to need hands with which to manipulate their world), they would also have curiosity. Look at other creatures with hands: apes and monkeys. While they arent as advanced as we are, they do have a sense of wonder and a curiousity about the world around them. Wouldn't mercreatures want to know more about the world around them, or the world that they cant be a part of (as we have one about the ocean)?
coldethyl
Yeah I totally bought that.

oceanmermaid
Hello to all again,
I have been reseaching mermaids for a very long time now and I am more than anxious in wanting to belive that they exist, but it does make it very hard to belive when the species itself may not want to be known or found. That is why i belive that there sightings are very few.
These are just my theories may not be plausable but they may explain alittle to why we don't see them often.

I do agree that they wouldn't look entirely like us, maybe alittle more fishy like in the face, i have seen in a web site that showed a studied drawing and a supposing litgit article of a mermaid that was caught and she had been autopsyied( sorry don't know how to spell that), the conclusion was that she didn't have two lungs she only had one.
the lung filled up most of her chest and it had the capablity to breath oxygen from the water. (this may not or may be true i am unsure) her stomach was a little smaller than ours and so were the rest of her organs. she also had very small gills behind her ears.

i think that they would have some intellegence for if they didn't and they did exist we would be catching them left, right and centre.

mermen that one is very hard to try and explain even when they could not be real.
They may be the rulers of this species, women tend to be more curious with everything in life, men not so much. mermen may not be as curious about us as the mermaids are hence why we have never seen one.
These are just my explainations, as i said before i recpect your opions whether they are in beliveing or not. This may just open some doors to the aquatic world.

I do have more but that is all for now. thank you all.
oceanmermaid
opps i forot the main reason to why we may not see them.

my research on mermaids has been a very exausting one, myths, stories or truth eventually roll into one, so we may never know the truth in their existance.

but there have been tales of children who swore to seeing a mermaid and in thier haste to seeing her,(not knowing what she or it was) they started throwing rocks at her, she died and the local town people buried her in the local cemetery, they also gave her a proper funeral, there are lots of stories where the mermiads have been mistreated by us, and i think that they might find us a potential danger to their existance.
hence why we rarely see them.
I hope this may answer some questions to somethings.
I do not belive that they have the same bodily functions as we do or else we would be able to live under water( no bills, morgage, just harmony. would be good.)

C'mon, we all want them to be real, admit it.

Hello Oceanmermaid grin2.gif

Welcome to UM.......Hey, if I believe there are winged creatures......why not mermaids.. laugh.gif

Other realms....passing, flying or swiming through ours.....who knows. Not bad pictures. yes.gif

I believe in Big Foot....too! I think it may not be supernatural but may be real! The following story is true it happen to me....and the second story happen to my friend....we are both "believers" in the reality of Big Foot.

I was up on Vancouver Island way up at the Northern end of it....Anywhoooo.......I was with a friend we were having lunch near our car.....not far from the river. My friend went off to do his business and all of a sudden I got this real "creepy feeling" and the hair on the back of my neck went up.

Whoa...something was watching me from across the river. The feeling of fear and danger was so overwhelming I almost threw up....and then my inner "warning signals" went off like "rockets" and my mind was screaming over and over ..."Get out of here, now!" I headed back to the car and yelled at my friend, "We need to get the heck out of here right now! Run for the car! We got in the car and tore out of there dirt flying everywhere from the tires. I told my friend keep going till I tell you to stop! We were a good five to ten miles away before I told him to slow down.....I was so shook up and my friend knew I was really frightened by something. I said to my friend, "Look I have gone hunting with my folks and brothers....seen deer and bears. I even walk up on one with my Mom when we split up from my Dad and brothers to flush out some deer....this big ol bear was eating berries so we step back and made a wide berth and went around him. I have heard bears snort and grunt but I was not frightened of them....respected them but not frightened.

Whatever was standing across the river was not a man, bear, or deer. I felt that it was big and tall I was looking high. I don't know what it was....but I have never been that terrified....I believe it would have harms us....more than likely killed us....that was the impression I was getting from it's presense. Years later I read a story about Big Foot sightings up on the Northern end of Vancouver Island! I later reminded my friend and told him do you remember our trip to Vancouver.....and our mad dash from that forest! And I showed him the article. He was surprised.

I have a friend that saw Big Foot up close and personal in 1963 up near Index, Washington. She was 13. She went about 50 feet from the campsite down to the creek and was standing on a knoll looking at the creek and all around the area when she smelt something putrid and sulfury. She look up and saw across the creek from her what she thought was a man in a bear suit at first. Then she thought...no, that's a man in a gorilla suit....then she thougth no, that's not a man in any suit. What the heck is it? Then sheer terror stuck her heart. She said when she looked into it's eyes which were dark brown it had a very mean-looking stare she said, as if I was it's "lunch". She said she will never forget the look in it's eyes. She said it reminded her of the movie The Edge where the bear the man make eye contact. She said she ran back to the campsite screaming and babbling and pointing. There were three families camping together so they all went to investigate what had frightened her so much. She showed them where she was standing and where it was standing across the creek. She said it had to be 8 or 9 feet tall...long dark brown hair with a tinge of red to it. They found huge foot prints....no camera or anything to preserve them. But the creature had crossed the creek to her side and you could see one clear foot print and a half a foot print that was part in the sand and part in the watery mud. The father found a few strands of hair on a branch and put it in his pocket.

They all went back to the camp site and had dinner and it was getting real dark now. It is so dark in the wood up here....you feel like you are on another planet. As they were cleaning up the camp they began to hear strange sounds....snorting and then a howl that started real low and went into a very high pitch of a scream....it was like nothing they had ever heard before and one the fellows was a hunter....hunted big bears and cougers it was nothing like he had ever heard before either. They had no guns or weapons except for a small axe for firewood. This would be like using a bee-bee gun to bring down a bull elephant. Being that only one in the group had a metal trailer.....all the other friends who had brought tents climbed into the trailer....the screams became louder and louder and closer and closer almost ear piercing sounds...several had to cover their ears...others covered their ears just because they coudn't stand to hear it scream for it was frightening. She really thought it was going to kill them all. They all were on the floor of the trailer frightened almost to death. The creature was storming around out side they could hear bushed and trees being pulled up and thrown around....they heard a lound cracking sound and a very loud crash it was the National Forest Park's wooden picnic table being ripped up out of the cement blocks and thrown into the woods. My friend said, no one dared to look out the window even though the blinds were pulled. The fear was so overwhelmig. The next morning they came out after they felt it had gone away. It was like a tornado had hit the camp site. Stuff everywhere. They gathered their stuff and belongs that they could find and jumped into their cars and trailer and drove out of the campsite like they were caught on fire. Coming up the road were two forest rangers in a truck. They stopped long enough to tell them that they did not destroy the campsite....that some creature came into the campsite and did all the damage. The rangers just smiled and said it was a bear. The guy that was the hunter said, "It was not a bear....I've hunted them! This was some kind of creature....then one of the rangers looked at the other one and said, "Aw...it's come back!" Her father yelled at them what do you mean "it's come back." They told them that this creature had been there before, but they thought he was gone for good. It had not been around for awhile." Then her father said, "You need to warn or post signs of warnings of this creature." And they looked at him and said, "who's going to believe it?" blink.gif

Back home safe in Seattle. Washington my friend's father took the hair sample in to the University of Washington to a friend of his to have it analyzed. The results came back....was not human....it was biped but was not a gorilla, chimpanzee or orangutan... orgin unknown. Some how the hairs mysteriously disappeared. hmm.gif

My friend who saw it, and the three familes who heard it and saw the foot prints believe it was a real creature.

We have a friend who is an "old logger".....been around here for years and years logging. He said the Big Foot comes and move some of thier equipment and stuff around, and pees on thier equipment. They are all "hunters" and they have never smelled anything like it before. He said usually you smell them before you see them.....but they are only glimps of them most the time. He said we don't bother them....they don't seem to bother us too much.... we let them be.

Got more stories of people who saw them.....and 99% of the time....they are terrified. They do not look at you like "Harry" of "Harry and the Hendersons". w00t.gif

Hello Rabbit Trail,
Lady Warrior is right you should start ur own Big Foot thread, these are very amazing and interesting encounters, i am so glad to hear that no one was hurt. It is good that you ran and great that you trusted ur first instinct (the first is always right.) Obviuosly Big Foot should not be held lightly, especially when it brings people to feel such fear. Very scary indeed, thank you for sharing.

Welcome to UM thumbsup.gif

I see you have a good point to believe the mermaid exist. Kinda utopic but hey, it's the freedom of expression!

I admitted myself being a skeptic, however, I somehow have a strong fondness to cryptozoology and waiting for the nature to prove me wrong! Whenever I'm wrong about my skepticism, that's my best moment! Thus, in other words, I want those cryptids to be real. But there are reasons why I'm being skeptic: If a cryptid should exist, it should not violate the law of physics, biology and ecology. That's why I'd rather point out that should a crpytid exist, It won't a creature of a great fantasy. Just a regular creature with a minor difference.

And in Japanese mythology, they also have mermaid (I'm half Japanese). But they didn't look like these beautiful girl with fish tail. At least, not that blatant! In Japanese mythology, the mermaid are huge in size, with webbed fingers and scale all over their body and look more like a fish with human face and a pair of hands. A monstrous looks!

If you can extract oxygen directly from the water, you'd have no use for lungs.

Some of the posts that actually believe just amaze me. Wow. Unreal.
Pax Unum
I think the mermaid pictures are a hoax, the legs and feet have supposedly fused together, but the flippers and calves are very "human in a mermaid suit"ish... there is no apparent streamlining through the shoulders, and hair makes no sense in an aquatic enviroment... when compared to a succesful aquatic mammal like a Dolphin, it contradicts the very evolved lower half, with not evolved at all top half... IMO

If mermaids exist, why haven't we ever caught one in a fishing net? or found a 'REAL' one washed up on the beach after a storm, etc? I'm not saying they don't exist, I just really doubt it...

hello all,
I have a reason to why they don't want to be seen. I have just seen that roswell alien autopsy video. I am sorry but I couldn't watch it all and the one reason was the autopsy all together, it was horrible, very sad if it is real and I believe it is.(I have put a post on there for why I believe that so if you want to know what I think you can read it or not up to you.(don't want explain why again. remember it's just my own belief).

think if mermaids/mermen did exist it could be possible that they know what we would do to them, they may be curious, may want to get closer but there is always that fear. That is my theory if they did/do exist, cause what they did to that poor alien( fake or not it's scary. just as it would be for us if aliens did it.) i know if i was something of that kind of species in existence i wouldn't want to be discovered.
tis just a theory.

So, mermaids dont want to be found because they saw what we did to that alien in the Roswell Autopsy Video? Who sold them a tv? Or for that matter, why dont I have a tv that works underwater?

If there are mermaids, or some creature that would fit the description of one, I dont think they would be an advanced species. They are probably of much lower intelligence than primates or dolphins and not nearly as human as they are fish with more developed limbs instead of fins.
