Here are a couple of my favorite....

If you dream of death it's a sign of a birth, if you dream of birth, it's a sign of death.

If you touch a loved one who has died, you won't have dreams about them
Vera Ikon
I've always been fond of the superstition surrounding the play Macbeth. In theater troups, it's refered to as "the Scottish play" or "that play" because it's believed saying the real name will bring really bad luck to a theater's next production. Bad luck as in, somebody involved with the play will die. Ah, I love the theater...
Blood Angel
I still follow the old magpie rhyme its said if you see the number of magpie in a group the following is reflected in your day:

1 for sorrow
2 for joy
3 for a girl
4 for a boy
5 for silver
6 for gold
7 for a secret never to be told

Hasn't failed me yet >_>
PurpleStuart
BA - it's a bit pessimistic that one as most of the time you only see one!
Potholer
I've always liked the magpie one too. Except, I always thought it was for sneezes blush.gif
And I quite often sneeze in twos so it was all good cool.gif

Bright Eyes
I love the Magpie superstition, and you shouldn't never really just see the one, that's why it's unlucky, as Magpies are known for staying in pairs, you never see one without the other. So always look for its mate if you see a MAgpie alone! It shouldn't be far off!

8 for a wish
9 for a kiss
10 for a bird you must not miss!

I love all the superstitions, I'll never walk under a ladder and I take extra care on Friday 13th! I've never had a black cat cross my path before so I'm lucky there wink2.gif

Oh and I will still never look into a mirror and say 'CANDYMAN' three times! scared.gif
Ruthie
Hi!

I don't think I'm superstitios... Not much..

I had an exam on friday 13th! But I got the best grade!!
So maybe friday 13th is good for me.
pappagooch
Mine are pretty stereotypical. Being a performer most of my life, the phrase “Break a leg” was used quite often prior to a performance.

When it comes to some lucky situation that has presented itself, the phase “knock on wood” is exclaimed quite often. But I usually find myself knocking on my head more than wood itself…
Seraphina
Funnily enough, I did the exact same thing the other day when I was asking a guy when the release date for the next expansion back for NWN was...he said "Friday the 28th...but it might be pushed back, so knock on wood."

I knocked on my head huh.gif ....and waddaya know, it was pushed back crying.gif
Ruthie
Oh, I forgot that one! "Knock on wood"
In Norway we say "Bank i bordet" Wich means somethig like "knock on the table" I guess it originated from "knock on wood".
Kismit
Must say I never realised how often I was superstitious before becoming a waitress ,now when I spill the salt it's automatic to pinch it with my right hand and throw it over my left shoulder ,and into the eyes of the devil or so the superstition goes and I never ever mention the fact I've gone a while without breaking a plate/cup dish of some kind with out touching wood immediately afterwards ..

and I allways make sure I'm wearing my lucky sock's before going to work thumbsup.gif

Same here! I'm constantly doing that like it's a habit. The fact that that phrase is used in my house a lot doesn't help me break the habit tho huh.gif

I've always been fond of the black cat superstition, but I beleive that it gives you good luck instead of bad. grin2.gif

Has to be the Candyman trtick, sit in the dark in the bathroom, look into the mirror and repeat Candyman five times. No bloody way thank you very much. scared.gif
AnimangaBloodThorn
What's the deal with the candyman? I always heard of him and everything...but what does he do? Does he do the same thing as Bloody Mary?

I've heard many things on Bloody Mary, a few are :
1) She rips your face off with her teeth
2) She stratches your face up
3) She pulls you into the mirror with her

Does Candyman do any of those things?Just wondering.

Cya!
Potholer
Doesn't candyman come and kill you with his hook hands?

I think they're both sily things to believe.....but that doesn't mean I have the guts to try. dontgetit.gif

Hm, I'm rather interested. Must go look up stuff. I'll report back later!

Cya!

~*~

Okay, I've looked up on some stuff. Couldn't find to much though, half of the sites were about the movie disgust.gif Well anyway, here's what I came up with.

Legend tells it that the alleged Candyman was a slave who was a good artist. His master ordered him to paint of portrait of his daughter. The slave and his master's daughter fell in love. The daughter became prergnant with the slave's baby. Of course, the father hated this and when he found out he rounded up some friends and they set out to kill the slave.

The chased him down and when the finally caught him, they cut his right hand off with a rusty blade. They proceeded to rub honey all over him and throw him near a bee-hive. One of the men threw down a mirror, so he could watch himself being stung to death. His spirit was caught in the mirror when he died.

Now they say that if you repeat Candyman five times in front of a mirror, he will show up standing behind you with a hook replacing his severed hand. He will also have bees swarming around his head.

There are a few different stories of what he does next

1) Nothing
2) He attacks you with his hook
3) He allows the bees to attack you

and a few more, but those were the most common I read about.

Has anyone heard any variations of this? Or anything else about the Candyman? I'd like to know, thanks.

Cya!

I've always heard if you tell your dream before eating anything in the morning,it will come true....so,no one in my family tells theirs until after breakfast.(unless it's a good dream)

I'm a bit confused with the black cat superstition, is it if a black cat crosses your path then its going to bring you bad luck or is it if a black cat walks away from you its taking your luck and if one walks towards you its bring you luck
My favorite would have to be , you wear your ring on your left ring finger because there is a vein that goes from that finger to you heart( highly untrue but still kinda neat) tongue.gif

QUOTE (canadian119 @ Nov 30 2003, 06:42 AM)

I think that's what it's supposed to be.
But I'm weird, so I just changed it around.
Cya!
Seraphina
The black cat one is a little weird...sometimes people think the cat is bad luck, and some people think it's good luck.

The good luck idea came from the idea that black cats were witches familiars, and if one crossed your path without noticing you, then it meant you had passed under the notice of the witch, and good times were to be had tongue.gif

On a sidenote, I also would never try the candyman thing...I'll admit, I don't honestly believe it...but...just one of those 'just in case' scenarios dontgetit.gif
canadian119
I've never tried the candyman one either I dont even like looking into mirrors when the lights are off just incase I get tempted Im going to try it one day though. Has anyone ever tried canadyman or the other one with the chick?

QUOTE (canadian119 @ Nov 30 2003, 02:26 PM)
Has anyone ever tried canadyman or the other one with the chick?

I've done "the one with the chick" aka Bloody Mary up at my cousins. It seems like all the weird stuff that happens to me happens up there, blink.gif

Well, anyway we held hands, spun around in a circle, and chanted "Bloody Mary" nothing happened. After nothing happened we sat in her kitchen, which has a door to the bathroom we chanted Bloody Mary in. I was facing the bathroom, my cousin was looking at me. I could have sworn I saw a large black shadow (a shadow person) walk out of the bathroom.

I ran out of the house. My cousin ran with me, but she had no clue what was going on.

I think it was just my imagination, not anything paranormal or anything as a result of chanting Bloody Mary, but I was caught up in the moment , lol.

Well, that was the last time I done Bloody Mary. I had done it once before with two older girls in a public bathroom, and the doors started swinging back and forth. But the more I think about that, the more I think it was a trick to scare me.

I don't have that kind of luck to never be anywhere in the dark with a mirror. I have a waterbed that has one of those fancy headboards with a mirror in the middle. Have to turn the lights off to sleep, ya know?

My friend (from jr high) was a great (and probably still- I'm not sure) superstitios person she told me one that if you (for example) walked under a ladder to get rid of the badluck was to go around eightimes counterclock wise. That was supposed to get rid of the unwanted badluck. happy.gif
I follow the superstition of not walking under ladders and I did that eight circle thingy in Jr. High. Don't ask. rolleyes.gif blush.gif I don't walk under ladders because something might bash me on the head or something.

I think that maybe supersitions are just a form of OCD (over-compulsive disorder). I mean think about it.
magic charm
some superstitions i have heard.....

never point at a rainbow

turn your money in your purse when theres a new moon

if you tempt fate always touch something wood after you said it, just incase

walking on cracks in the pavement

no new shoes on a table

never wash clothes on new years day, you might wash one of the family away

Kira
never wash clothes on new years day, you might wash one of the family away.
Or throw any rubbish out of the door way or sweep the house on New Years day...

I have always done that... and when I have lived with friends or Boyfriends etc.. I always do the same.. so much so that my ex still does no housework onthe 1st of Jan neither does his mum etc and the rubbish is put in black bags to go out after midnite on the 2nd of Jan...

Either that or it's a good excuse not to disturb too many hangovers devil.gif thumbsup.gif

I had to try this.....
AM I DEAD TEST"
1. Can you pass through doors or other stuff?
is there something worth looking at one the other side?

2. Do you have to sleep in a coffin during the day?
no but I like my bed it's just a coincedence that my bedroom has blackout curtains

3. Can you not stand to be near a crucifix?
If they are badly made with cheap metal yes!!!

4.Are You some what invisable?
Can you see me now????

If you answered yes to these qeustions you might just be dead[/COLOR] notice they said might....but then I know I'm dead...
KayEl
I still pick up face-up pennies on the street. grin2.gif
Celumnaz
find a penny pick it up and all the day you'll have good luck...

I wonder not so much what the superstitions are... there are hundreds... but where they came from...

Like walking under a ladder... kinda obvious one, someone might drop something on your head!

I think I understand the black cat one, the one I heard is it's bad luck to have a black cat cross your path... but really, I've had dozens and dozens and dozens of black cats cross my path and I think if anything it's brought me good luck. But yeah I think it came from the witches familiar thing...

I've done Bloody Mary alone, nothing happend. I only heard about Candyman after the movie came out, so I never tried it... just thought it was a movie gimmik.
But! I am kinda spooked to look into a mirror at night with the lights off now. Not as brave as when I was a teenager.

Knock on wood... I knock on my head too. But that knock on wood seems pretty common... wonder where it came from?

In highschool we used to touch a screw in the car when we went over railroad tracks, or touch the roof of the car once when you run a yellow light and twice if you run a red light so you won't get caught.

Or, when I open a fresh pack of cigaretts sometimes I still flip the first cig I pull out and stick it back in upsidedown to be smoked last for luck.

pinch of spilled salt over left shoulder...

What about all those itches?

If your nose itches someone's coming over
if your right hand itches something bad's gonna happen but if the left hand itches you're going to get money...
if your ear itches someone's talking about you... left bad right good or something...

How about breaking a mirror for 7 years bad luck!

Or what was that other one?... if you see a wild lilly growing then someone innocent died in that spot?

Every time a bell rings an angel gets his wings? hehe...

Ummm....

Ordering an extra drink at a gambling table and not drinking it... it's for lady luck.

4 leaf clovers!

A watched pot never boils over...

Rabbits feet...

Wishbones on Thanksgiving... or even birthday wishes and falling star wishes and wishing well wishes...

something borrowed, something new... something something... for weddings...

Ummm... sometimes I cross my fingers for luck...

Geez there's hundreds of em...
Duofrost
My personal fav superstition is the one when your with your loved one not to spit a post cause it causes bad luck between the two of you
Daughter of the Nine Moons
All I know about Candyman is from Wes Craven's horror flick & Bloody Mary sounds alot like Mary Black who haunted my grade school bathroom. Legend had it if you went in shut off the light & repeated "I don't believe in Mary Black" 5 times, she would scratch your face. However if you repeated "I don't believe in John Black" 5 times you would die. Hubby heard that if you looked into the darkened mirror in the bathroom that you would see a family memeber that has died.

I've heard that the ladder one is because when a ladder is leaning up against a wall it forms a triangle with the ground and the wall. Triangle = holy trinity ? therefore if you walk under the ladder you break the trinity.

The wood one goes back a long way, can't remember the finite details but it stems from a belief that your ancestors souls are contained within trees, touching the tree puts you in contact with your ancestor for good luck.

naah if you walk under a ladder someone might drop a bucket on your head - that would be unlucky laugh.gif

I don't usually believe in fortune cookies and all that stuff.

I remember I was at FAO Schwartz, the ultra expensive toy store in Mid town Manhattan, they had this Hello Kitty display where you put in a penny and you get a fortune from Hello Kitty (who had a crystal ball in front of her). My fortune read: You are going to get a BIG SURPRISE!

Well, I headed over to Central Park, got to Sheep Meadow....there was a bunch of guys playing volleyball nearby and the ball went flying and WHAM....landed smack on the top of my head! disgust.gif

Classic!

I guess I got my surprise! w00t.gif

I thought that if your right hand itches, it means you will meet someone soon (shake hands); and if its the left hand, you will get money.

i dont believe in any superstitions, fortuanant since its a sacrelige, but i have always been fond of the bloody mary myth. if yall are curious, it comes from bloody mary, an evil queen of england, called "bloody" because of her fondness of torturing peasants. she was tracked by a deamon, bent on bringing her to hell, which she completelydeserved (not kill her, bring her to hell, yeah theres a differance). of course she couldnt escape from a deamon, so she jumps into a lake because shes half crazy with fear. the deamon is afraid of water, so drains the lake to get at her. she drowns in the lake just as the deamon is in the process of bringing her eternal damnation, so she is trapped in the world behind reflective surfaces(mirrors, pools, ect) forever.
