Anyone hear anything about this? I wrote the story in the link about weird light formations in the sky over Greenham Common last Saturday. I have since had 10 calls from people who say they saw the lights. Does anyone know any more?

WOW! VERY INTERESTING! Thank you for sharing this article.
This sounds VERY MUCH like what many of us saw here and around Portland, Oregon late in the evening of April 29th, 2006 and just after midnight on April 30th 2006. Many people reported the sighting to NUFORC and NUFORC is still trying to figure out what we saw and is why they've posted about it twice on their main page. They have now since updated their database to include what the witnesses saw although they've not updated their main page about it yet.

PORTLAND, OR - On Saturday night, April 29, 2006, at 23:50 hrs. (Pacific), several witnesses near downtown Portland, OR, witnessed at least two clusters of very unusual, red, self-luminous, disc-shaped objects over the downtown area. Everyone reported the event in similar terms, and NUFORC still has not been able to identify the objects. If anyone witnessed the event, we would invite them to submit additional reports, using our Online Report Form. If anyone knows what the lights were, we would welcome hearing from the party.

And this:
PORTLAND, OR, APRIL 29/30, 2006

NUFORC has received a number of reports from the Portland, OR, area, regarding a number of very interesting sightings that occurred at approximately midnight, Saturday night, April 29, 2006. The duration of the event was approximately ten minutes. Many citizens there have reported having witnessed at least two groups of brightly lighted objects, seen moving over the downtown area of Portland, where they reportedly hovered briefly, and then disappeared to the south. Shortly after the first sighting, a second formation of similar objects was seen.

We have elected not to report here the details of the event until we have received as many independent reports from other witnesses as possible. Under circumstances like those reported in this case, the first possibility we usually address is whether the lights might have been part of a nighttime advertising display. Such displays are reported to our Center frequently. However, in this case, our preliminary assessment is that the objects were not projected beams of light, either laser-based or incandescent.

If anyone in the Portland area was witness to the event, we would be most grateful if he/she would submit a short, factual statement regarding the sighting, using our ONLINE REPORT FORM. We would like to know 1) where the witness was located at the time of the sighting, 2) what direction he/she was looking, 3) how the objects moved across the sky, i.e. from left to right, right to left, overhead, etc., 4) how many object were observed, and 5) what they looked like. Any other information would be useful. Please be as precise, and complete, as you can, in describing what you saw.

Thank you!

These strange lights were seen in Portland, Oregon, Tigard, Oregon, as well as in Washington State, in Idaho amd Californina on the same date.

You can read the individual eyewitness reports here:
http://www.nuforc.org/webreports/ndxe200604.html

It is still a mystery - no one has been able to verify what was seen and is still considered a UFO sighting.

OR - another hoax that should of been beta tested a tad bit better before going public - seen this happen too - gets so easily busted that they just close it down in shame.

This most certainly is yet another sighting/report of fire balloons/lanterns; the vast majority of these type of sightings being reported to UK groups or websites occur on Friday or the weekend - ie when outdoor parties/events are being held. These fire balloons seem to be a cheaper alternative to laser/light shows.

You know, I can seriously accept this answer! yes.gif

Makes total sense and has a good logic to it! thumbsup.gif

If you can't access the link, enter Newbury Today into Google, and search through 'news'. The story has not been taken down, the MOD and the Met Office have been unable to explain what caused the lights, and we have since had a number of other people give very similar accounts. Oh, and we have a picture too. It should be on the website tomorrow.

Dude, where i live there were also flashes. It was very bizar and nothing i ever saw before... But it could be just lightning i guess. I didn't see any formations of lights, maybe because i didn't pay much attention to it. It was like lightning and it was very close to me. But the odd thing is that there was no thunder. And the clouds just kept flashing. I went to the movies, and when i came back home, it was still at the same place and still flashing like hell.

I live in Belgium btw.

Nice to see that the media chooses not to accept the logical and suggested explanations wink2.gif

for recent confirmed explanations of very similar sightings and reports in the UK. These fire/lantern balloons are rapidly becoming a ufological pest!

Of course, what my story was saying was that they were unexplained. There are no little green men.

As you should be aware from my emails to the NWN, Robert, there is a logical explanation. I was very surprised at the quote from so-called local UFO expert Steve Harris - any UFO expert in the UK will be aware of fire balloons and the sightings they cause. All that remains is to find out who was having a party in the area south of Newbury thumbsup.gif

Sorry but I am not familiar with the areas over there (I've only been to London) , but is Newbury close to Norwich??

The reason I ask is because I found this article today:

UFO spotted in skies over Norwich

I posted the full article on the other thread here:

I can't direct link to the article properly.. but how I found it was by going to
http://news.google.com/ then in the search box I entered UFO and the story link comes up there, then one can click on it that way.

Hi Cinders,

Norwich and Newbury aren't that close, around 140 miles apart. These fire balloons are being launched every weekend all over the UK, but sightings are more clustered in the south of the country.
