It's the world's number one sport. It's the beautiful game. It needs a thread.
Tell us your footballing allegiance, or discuss the latest footballing story.
And the big story at the moment is Gerard Houllier's dismissal by Liverpool.
Was it fair to sack him? And who do you think should replace him?
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/t...ool/3734773.stmThe latest odds offered by bookmakers Ladbrokes:
7/4: Rafael Benitez
3/1: Martin O'Neill
4/1: Alan Curbishley
5/1: Gordon Strachan
6/1: Jose Mourinho

Actually some of the underdogs this year to watch for that may come up to bite the front-runners:
1) Cleveland Browns
2) Detroit Lions
3) Houston Texans
4) Jacksonville Jaguars

No, this is for association football, only. Rugby is a big enough sport to deserve it's own thread, if someone wants to start one.
And sweetpumper, as much as I like the sport, American football is not the world's number one sport, nor did Pele describe it as the beautiful game.

Well I have to say that Im a Manchester United fan.
No Im NOT a glory hunter,supported them since I was 5yrs old(1975)
No I never lived there,my Uncle did and he got me into them.As he was my fav uncle I had to support them, but as I got older I enjoyed watching them.
No I havn't been to see them play live YET,as a girlie I havn't been allowed to go on my own and my ex was a Hammers fan so refused to take me
I think its wrong to sack a manager just because the team didnt win anything(if I got that wrong excuse me,just heard about it reading this thread)
Cheers Freddy

Well for my sins I have been a Chelsea fan my whole life (hence my name) and up until the last few years it has been a labour of love.
Now things seem to have got a lot better (well at least we're not skint anymore), although we still seem to be losing our Boss, which I think is out of order, considering we finished 2nd in the Premiership and semi-finalists in the Champions League.
As for the forthcoming competition?
Well I am tired of thinking we have a chance; it happens every 2 years and we always come close and blow it.
So this time I am not going to get excited and will just keep my fingers crossed.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!

I have been to see the Hammers play, when Harry Redknapp was manager. It was a birthbay present for me from my ex

He hated it that I was into footie.
As for now,I got my bloke into it and its going to be an interesting season coming up.He now supports Norwich and they are up with us.
As for Euro 2004,I'd love to say ENGLAND as well. But we will have to see.My purse is saying Portugal v Sweden as thats who I picked in the locals sweepstake

I would win £250.00 if that did happen.

We were literally stairing down the barrell of financial oblivion last year, now look at us.

Thats where the term Chelsea headhunters comes from isn't?
My mates are Chelsea fans and go to Stamford bridge for all the home games.
One of my mates took his 13 yr old daughter to her first match a couple of months ago.She loved it and came back to tell us the whole game(even though we had watched it on the TV)
My guys nephew is a Man Utd fan and we are hoping to take him to watch them play at Norwich next season.I would love to take him to the Theater of Dreams, but his Mum isn't going to let him.(he is only 12 yrs old!)
She is scared there might be violence

Am I on my own being a Man Utd supporter (on this forum I mean)?

Yeah, The Chelsea Headhunters are one of the nastiest firms around.
Thankfully the days of violence at Chelsea matches are gone (security is so tight these days that you would be out on your ear before you had a chance to kick-off).
That's not to say the violence doesn't go on anymore, it is just away from the grounds; from what I read, The Headhunters are still alive and well.
I am so glad that children can go to matches these days without seeing the kind of things I witnessed as a kid at matches.
I can't wait to take my little boy when he gets a little bit older.

The thing that keeps so many away these days is the price. Admission prices for most of the premier league teams are just nightmarish.
Freddy mentioned going to Old Trafford (I refuse to use the laughably pompous other name

). I know so many local Man U fans who can no longer go, and they feel very annoyed, especially as Old Trafford is packed out each week by thousands of southerners, businessmen, and Irish fans over on the ferry.

News just in(what I mean is I just got an e-mail from mu.com)Man Utd have just signed striker Alan Smith from Leeds. He has signed a 5 year contract worth £7.05m.
I think it is great that anyone can feel safe going to see a footie match now.It isn't look on as much these days as a mans game(I was always told when I was younger that I was a girl and shouldnt like footie, glad I didnt listen to anything my parents told me!!)
Prices for everything is really bad these days,Man Utd are not as bad price wise as other prem teams.I do agree with you Cuffy, but if you want to see your team you will find some way.Thats what I have learnt, wish I'd learnt that years ago.

I agree with you about Smith, Agent. He's a hotheaded thug. I'm surprised a club with Man U's clout didn't look further afield than someone who isn't good enough to start for England.
I suspect Smith could be for United what Fowler has been for City. A waste of money. I get the feeling he'll finish up as an expensive bench ornament.

Since I moved out of the Big Smoke a few years ago, I now reside in Lewes, a couple of miles from the proposed new site for Brighton's ground.
I for one hope they get it; the fans deserve a great stadium as they are some of the most loyal I have ever met and it would be great to be able to pop down the road to see the Seagulls in action.
I wish them all the luck for the playoffs.

We did get a couple of wins there and the future is lookin a bit brighter woth young players.
As long as the english media can keep a lid on their arrogance ill be really happy if you lot do really well.
Dont understimate croatia tho, its gonna be them that end up costing you dearly not france if you dont take them seriously enough and ive read a few quotes to lead me to believe the england players arent.
Im gonna say itll be a cezch republic (they are awesome and have the best midfielder in the world at the moment in nedved), holland (whoever they get i hope they get stuffed) final. Although Italy an protugal (pyrennial underacheivers) also have shout.
You'll reach the quarters, which isnt that bad. If you do better then good on you.

That's my concern over the England squad, Wun. They just don't perform at the big tournaments. Beckham will play his heart out, Owen will probably score a belter, but will the rest get their fingers out?
