user posted image rThe summer of 1977 was chaotic for central Illinois news media. The most talked about local story was the multiple sightings of giant birds throughout the region. These numerous accounts commenced with the alleged attempted abduction of young 10-year-old Marlon Lowe by one of these birds on July 25th. A black bird with a white neck ring reportedly swooped down on the undersized boy and, grabbing him by his shirt, briefly raised him from the ground before dropping him—ostensibly from a blow from the boy’s flailing hands.Exactly what type of birds these were has been argued and debated by cryptozoologists and brave ornithologists now for the past almost thirty years. Next summer will mark the three-fold decade anniversary of the sightings. Some of sightings have been told countless times on paranormal internet websites, while others, such as the fact that one of the birds alighted just outside a softball outfield fence while the game was progressing—the umpire actually stopped play and all the participants gawked and the avian immensity, have remained for whatever reason neglected.

One particular contemporary event that has been complete ignored might just hold the clue that could explain the crazy events of that summer. On July 22th, just three days prior to the now infamous Lawndale incident, a rural New Holland man [New Holland IL is 20 miles from Lawndale] saw an exotic bird on their farm. An account from the Lincoln Courier described it as such:“It was larger than a turkey,” said Kenneth Knollenburg, describing the bird on his farm. “I’d guess it weighed 25 pounds or so.” He said the bird was a dull gray with a white neck, small beak and a crest of feathers on its head, hee [sic] added. The bird’s wingspan was estimated at four feet.“It wasn’t afraid of people,” the New Holland farmer explained. “We wondered at the time if it hadn’t escaped from a zoo.”

The Piasa bird is a myth thumbsup.gif It's most likely an escaped condor. I don't believe in the attacks though.

Strange that there are a number of people seeing this type bird in different locations and then after that one summer no more sightings have been reported.

Escaped from another dimension maybe? Then gathered back up when it was found to be missing.
I always wondered about the same thing happening with the Mothman.
Also i heard about the same type of stories in the "Mothman chronicals",I think. If i remember right seems the giant bird was seen all over Ohio, Wv,and surrounding states.then disapeared like your bird and the mothman.

Yeah, certain Condor's are huge in size and nearly extinct. That would explain why they don't see them often. A bird of prey weighing 30lbs with a mighty wingspan, they may hunt a small child and then realize he's too heavy to fly with for very long like in the article. They can fly like 50mph, so dissapearing to another place is nothing to them.

The article said at least one of these birds had a crest on it's head. Condors aren't crested, they don't have any feathers on their heads at all. And a 4 foot wingspan isn't out of the ordinary for a big raptor. I'm thinking some kind of eagle.

back in the 1970s my older brother and sister saw a bird like this in hanover park il. they said it was the size of a private plane and could of picked me up and carried me off... my sister was seriously scared by the event.. in lawndale not that far away .. a sighting as we all know was confirmed... iam am not an expert but i have studied birds of prey and vultures... this bird may fit the description of a condor.. but that would be far from its territorry... california.. andes.. there is of course a large amount of deer in illinios that could support a bird of this size... lets be realistic...it may be a missing link.. or a condor or pair somehow let loose in the area. this bird or birds unfortunatly may no longer exist ,since there has been no current sightings..there are some sightings now in texas and the mexican border, you can find this on you tube look under giant bird.... also the history channel is doing a special on monsters that mentions this THUNDERBIRD species.. a retired marine has it on film .. i believe there was ..hopefully may be a bird or birds still in alive.. until some remains are found ..its still a myth
