Charity will trace 'mouse biter'

An animal welfare group has said it is hopeful of tracing a man who can be seen on a website biting the head off a live pet mouse.
About 2,000 people have viewed the incident on the YouTube site.

The incident is believed to have happened at a party in the Turf Lodge area of west Belfast.

"We've had a couple of leads which my staff will be running down today," an Ulster Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesman said.

Spokesman Stephen Philpott said: "If the USPCA in this instance can prove unnecessary suffering, which is the key phrase under the Welfare of Animal Act, we will certainly be taking it further."

Mr Philpott said the organisation had already had a "great response" from the public after appealing for help to identify the man.

The two-minute video shows the man, referred to as Johnny, drinking from a can of beer before biting the head off the mouse and chewing it, egged on by other party-goers.

He then spits it out saying it is impossible to swallow. The man is heavily built, in his 20s, with short hair.

Mr Philpott said he was worried by the trend of people being recording carrying out acts of cruelty against animals.

"We have become alarmed in the last year at how many of these incidents we have been asked to have a look at," he said.

"Unfortunately, this is like a type of happy slapping against animals where people record themselves doing depraved things and then show that footage to the rest of their colleagues."

Mr Philpott said the acts being carried out were designed to be as shocking and "grotesque" as possible.

"Singling out a defenceless animal like this just simply to glorify yourself or publicise yourself just can't be done," he said.

I HATE these kind of scum. People who hurt animals should be put bleeding into a tank of hungry bull sharks so they can feel what it's like to be the helpless victim.

How much suffering is 'unnecessary suffering'? Isn't losing one's life in such a way enough? Especially for a pet, an animal taken into one's home, for whom one is responsible. I hope he gets a disease too. I can't think of anything bad enough for him to experience. Where was the owner of the mouse during all this?

I remember seeing some pictures of a video footage of an asian woman crushing a little kitten with the heels of her pumps its some kind of fetish...i think its called crushing, I'm not sure but it was the saddest thing I've seen. poor little kitten. police had no luck tracking her down

ain't we being all hypocrites? we eat cows and pigs. the japs even eat mouses and dogs for dinner and i don't see the animal cruelty busting them. and hunters go fox hunting for fun

There is a BIG difference between killing an animal for FOOD, and biting it's head off for ENTERTAINMENT.

If u ever caught the video on You Tube like I did you can cleary pointon the switch frame in the movie. It's not a real mouse guys and gals...it's a fake mouse.

There is a switch frame in the movie which clearly proves that it was a edited movie production...Probably for sh**s and giggles. Alot of Video Editing guys tend to do these types of videos.

Yea, it's gotta be the same story because I had it saved under my favorites and I went to view the video and the account had been suspended and the movie was deleted.

They think just because they see something nasty that it's real....but in this case I don't believe it was real and even the video editor here at work stated there was a switch frame involved in the movie.

Even if it were true...there would be no real proof or evidence stating that it was a real mouse....so case closed...people do stupid thing everyday. This is just one of those stupid funny things that somebody took offensively.

Even if the mouse was fake, the thought of biting a mouse's head off is still kind of

Well, I'm glad, if it was fake, that no real mouse was killed. However, the fact that someone would go to all that trouble to fake something like biting the head off a mouse is pretty disturbing also.

The problem is, even if it was fake, there is surely some sick cookie out there that is gonna imitate it, thinking it to be a hilarious idea! Like the Bonsay-Kitten website; that was most likely a fake too, but I'm sure it put ideas into someone's head. It doesn't bear thinking about!!!

They probably don't realize it is fake. Not that it matters, real or not there probably
isn't a whole lot they can do to him. The most thay can do is probably just a slap
on the wrist.

Remember that time that guy had those animal rights people on him for putting a kitten in a whisky jar? Well if u do remember that then you would remember that when they found the guy they found out that he faked the whole thing...then the animal rights people looked stupid.

Killing animals for anything other than food or survival is terrible. This guy is a pr*ck.
