Why not turn the lunar eclipse this Saturday into a guessing game?
Will the pale white moon take on a burnt orange color shortly after rising above the horizon? Crimson? Muddy brown?
The full moon will cloak itself in one of fall's traditional colors, but which one is anyone's guess, says Bradenton astronomer George Fleenor.
"We don't know what it'll look like. It'll either be murky brown like the last one, or it could be a brilliant orange or a blood red. It all depends on global atmospheric conditions including volcanic eruptions and pollution," he said.
Shorter wavelengths of light in the Earth's atmosphere that produce copper or reddish colors are another factor.Herald Tribune
