I remeber reading somewhere that there is a certain amount of people needed to be able to restart the population. If there isn't enough people there won't be enough genetic diversity and the babies won't come out right.

Would the 1% be able to get to each other?

One percent of the American population would still be three million people. In my little Northern Kentucky hometown there would be 70 survivors, presumeably split between male and female. At least 20 of those females would be of child-bearing age and female children would become so in the foreseeable future. Here in Cincinnati, Ohio, there would be 3,500 survivors. In New York City, 80,000.

The American bison ("buffalo"), which once numbered into the many millions, had been exterminated down to the last half-dozen before conservation efforts began. Today the herds once again thunder across the plains. You're permitted to hunt them. American supermarkets carry "buffalo burger" steaks..
