Was it Leonardo in the Turin Shroud?

Don't necessarily think da Vinci is the subject, however it's possible he had some hand in the creation of the shroud.

What the hell does this have to do with Cryptozoology? The image on the shroud isn't Bigfoot or Nessie, it is a normal human being. There are other forums for this topic.

d.c.

If I'm not mistaken the forum title is 'Cryptozoology, Myths and Legends'. I would think the Turin Shroud (or its origins at least) would qualify as a legend?

Sorry to have to get into an argument about this. Just think maybe you overreacted a little?

Apologies to the mods if this is not 'done' and I've stepped on your toes here. Being relatively new I'm still not completely familiar with all the customs of these forums.

It is an honest mistake and it has happened before. But if you look around the whole site you will see many other forums that deal with myths and legends as well.

The way this forum is supposed to be read is Cryptozoology, (study of unknown animals), and "Myths and Legends", RELATING to Cryptic animals. For example, are "legends" about dragons related to possible survival of dinosaurs?

I would think that the Shroud of Turin relates to the forum "Spirituality, Religion and Beliefs" because it purports that the image on the shroud is Jesus and "imprinted" by some kind of "spiritual energy".

Ok, thanks for clarifying thumbsup.gif

I suppose, to a newbie like myself, it is easy to misread the forum title.

Ancient Mysterys probably is a better fit.

I do not think it is Leonardo. It looks nothing like a Ninja Turtle!

I voted 'no'. I don't think it's Jesus either.

In 1988, the Vatican allowed the shroud to be dated by three independent sources--Oxford University, the University of Arizona, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology--and each of them dated the cloth as originating in medieval times, around 1350. The shroud allegedly was in a fire during the early part of the 16th century and, according to believers in the shroud's authenticity, that is what accounts for the carbon dating of the shroud as being no more than 650 years old. source

3:1 pattern was the standard in 14th century Europe source

An account of the Turin Shroud - claimed to date from the time of Christ but first recorded in about 1389 by the Bishop of Troyes (who described it as a cunning fraud) and recently dated to the 1350s - is given in Clive Prince's In His Own Image - the Real Story of the Turin Shroud (London: Bloomsbury 1995)source

Interesting article, thanks for posting. I had never heard speculation about DaVinci being involved in creating the shroud, though I could understand his motivations of doing such a thing. The paragraph in the article I would like to learn more about is this:

QUOTE
Colluding with the House of Savoy, Pope Innocent VIII (the witch-burning pope, closely tied to Lorenzo de Medici) commissioned Leonardo to produce a 'better shroud' in 1492.

Does anyone have any links to other sources that can back up this claim? I did a little searching and found nothing.

And there are other, more elegant ways to formulate your opinion. People make mistakes, don't you? No need to start a sentence then with 'What the hell...'

And perhaps I wasn't making a mistake after all.

Merriam Webster gives on Legend

1 a : a story coming down from the past; especially : one popularly regarded as historical although not verifiable.

And that is how we can describe the continuing story on the Turin Shroud too.

It is typical by the way that you tried to frame me, by only writing down the word Cryptozoology.

Because the section clearly gives:

Cryptozoology, Myths and Legends.

Well, then why the rude language?

Perhaps you can contact the author through World Mysteries?
