SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- A Brazilian woman who was shot six times in the head after an altercation with her ex-husband was out of the hospital and talking to the media on Saturday.

"I know this was a miracle," 21-year-old housewife Patricia Goncalves Pereira told Globo TV. "Now I just want to extract the bullets and live my life."

Pereira was shot Friday in the small city of Monte Claros, about 900 kilometers (560 miles) north of Sao Paulo, after quarreling with her former husband, who was reportedly upset because she refused to get back together with him. She was also shot once in the hand.

Doctors could not explain why the .32-caliber bullets did not penetrate Pereira's skull and didn't even need to be extracted immediately.

"I can't explain how something like this happened," surgeon Adriano Teixeira said, adding that the bullets were lodged under the woman's scalp.

The ex-husband was still at large.

Err.. no, the .32 is *not* "Magnum". huh.gif Most variations of .32 are actually a century-old or olderlow-power design (the first self-contained rimfire rounds were .32 and .22s, in the 1860s).

Depending on the age of those particular cartridges, distance fired and where they hit, it's not completely surprising. However, it's a good excuse to have a Jules-and-Vincent moment. thumbsup.gif

I think it all depends on the angle they were fired at and where they hit her on the head. When a bullet hits at an angle it would have much more difficulty breaking the skull.
fawkes2
wow , that's amazing .
Nosferatu
yeah thats a bit much... who cares what caliber the bullets are... 6 times with anything propelled by gunpowder into your head is gonna do some damage. she should definately be toast... or at least a vegetable.
rapid7

Impressive... would've have been more impressive if she spat the bullet out of her mouth.
Now, that would have freaked out her ex husband.. tongue.gif
Unlimited
wow thats true love; he dumped every round...ouch crying.gif

Could have been just low quality bullets with bad powder, they somehow go wet (could be homemade) or that the angle fired from was off.

Still, she's extremely lucky to be alive.

How do you figure that a .32-caliber handgun is a Magnum?
Yes, there is such a cartridge as a .32-caliber Magnum but it's not the most common .32-caliber cartridge. Far from it. The .32 H&R Magnum is not often seen, though it was introduced less than 25 years ago.
A Magnum cartridge is defined as a cartridge having a greater amount of power than other cartridges of the same caliber. However, it's the manufacturer that puts that tag, "Magnum" on a cartridge, not some board of standards.
In South America, the most popular .32-caliber handgun cartridges are the .32 Auto, .32 Smith & Wesson and .32 Smith & Wesson Long.
Of these three, the .32 Smith & Wesson is the weakest. It should, however, be able to penetrate a human skull.
But sometimes bullets do odd things, especially against hard bone like the skull.
The .22 rimfire cartridge is notorious for its unpredictability. It can kill a human with one shot, and the next person may absorb 10 such bullets and survive.
The .32 Smith & Wesson is not much more powerful than the .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge. Plus, it uses a soft lead bullet that may flatten on impact with a hard object such as a skull, impeding its ability to penetrate.
Most .32 caliber pistol cartridges are not terribly powerful.
Still, you'd think at least ONE .32-caliber bullet would have resulted in a fatality. That woman is very, very lucky.
Had her attacker used a .38 Special or larger caliber, she'd be playing a harp right now.

Recliner Saves Man Who Was Shot in Head
AP
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (Nov. 21) - Now comes another reason to stay put in the La-Z-Boy: A man sitting in his easy chair was shot in the head by his wife, but the sturdy recliner absorbed most of the bullet's force and left him virtually unscathed.

The couple had been arguing at home on Sunday evening, said Contra Costa County sheriff's Lt. Charles Skuce. Then Jan Kamp stood behind her seated husband and fired a gun at the back of his head, Skuce said.

Because she fired through the recliner, the bullet only slightly wounded Norman Kamp, 57, Skuce said.

Norman stood up from his chair, followed his wife into the kitchen and declared, "You shot me," according to authorities.

Jan Kamp fired a second shot at her husband, but missed, Skuce said. He retreated to a neighbor's house in the unincorporated Pacheco area of the county, where he called 911.

After talking to deputies, Norman Kamp was treated at a hospital and released.

Jan Kamp, 58, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and booked at County Jail in Martinez.

alien.gif this statement is correct --there are many variations of 32 cal ammunition and handguns . there are a number of very low powered variants that are either rim-fire or use black powder .

the most powerful modern 32 cal pistol round is the 32 magnum . it is expensive and uncommon . shoots about like a 38 special.

the 32 was common in revolvers around 1900. it was produced in various automatic pistols from about 1912 and was used in various military and police service up until the 1950's in some countries.

even in the lowest powered black-powder 1880's revolver-- i wouldn't want to get shot by it--esp in the head! this poor lady is lucky to survived !
