I saw it not more than 20 minutes ago. I opened the outside door to see if my cat wanted in and across the street i saw a dog thing walk across the intercection. At first i thought "yea just a dog" but i looked closer and then i thought it's so tall it has to be a deer. Even polar bear crossed my mind because of it's body type. It was trotting along sniffing the ground. It's behavior was dogish but the body-type just didn't quite look like a dog and it was so big.
It ducked out of sight. I thought about running after it but i was scared it would attack me. So i went out and jumped in the car and circled the blocked several times trying to spot it again. No luck. Can't find it. There's a pitch black area of trees and bushes that i don't dare venture into not only because of this unknown thing but rabid possums and skunks.

Just a shot in the dark here but I'm guessing... oh I don't know... maybe a bear?

Here's a rough sketch. Took some time to get scanner going.

It was big. It was over 3 feet high judging by the pickup it briefly stood beside. It was either whitish or blondish.
I dunno maybe it was a dog but it was freaky looking and i think is the first time i haven't been able to identify an animal in my homeland.

I'm still going with a bear.
After reading all of your second post.
3 feet isn't that tall. It was likely a dog then.

I live in Kansas we don't get many bears. Especially white or blond ones.

Not likely. But i swear it looked halfway between a dog and a polar bear.

If the proportion of the drawing are somewhat accurate it looks like a calf. If not a calf then a dog. Those are certainly not rare in Kansas. Personally my first thought after seeing it would be "dammit that b**** got out again."

Is there any possibility that it could have been an Afghan Hound. They have very long snouts and necks, and are quite tall & furry. They also come in a range of colours, including cream, and light grey.

Maybe if the hair was much shorter it would look close i think.

Well you'll have to forgive me but I don't think someone getting a quick glance of something in a dark area will be able to point out specifics accurately.

I think I know what you saw. It's called a coatimundi and I saw one once getting into a garbage can and it had some markings like a raccoon. Here's a picture of one, the one I saw was quite large.

But how big are coatmundi? I thought they were smallish. I thought of an anteater, but I'm quite sure that Kansas is not their natural habitat.

I don't know how big they get, but the one time I saw one in Florida, it was raiding a garbage can standing on it's back feet and reaching into it.
I guess like all animals, some are bigger than others depending what they eat. Like in China, the people are very small, but the guide we had was tall and well fed because he was the only child in his family.
My twin schnauzers are different sizes, one is light and small, the other one eats everything she can and is 2x's as big.
Lots of explainations for different things, nothing is certain. Pythons do not belong in Florida, but they are eating all the small animals in the Everglades.
People let their pets go, and this is what happens.
Hope he sees it again.

Off topic but, once a coatimundi escaped from the zoo and got all the way to my backyard woods. My neighbor thought he was drunk when he saw it and thought it was my cat lol. It was really cool, I even got to pet it when they finally captured it. It was cool. Have no idea how it got all the way from the zoo to my backyard, they're miles apart. But I remember that when I first saw a coatimundi in my backyard, it looked like a cross between a cat and a monkey, so no, coatimundis cant get that big. It wasn't a coatimundi. Gee. I wonder if the coatimundi from the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio got all the way to Kansas, then took some steroids and is wondering around. You never know with this world of ours.
EDIT: Coatimundis are from South America, not Kansas. However they do escape from the Cincinnati zoo once in a while, lol.

Maybe you remember in which direction the knees of front legs were bending? Because that would explain alot, was it canine or ungulate
(i hope you understand what i mean...)

Tamandua
Or, Giant Anteater

It wouldn't be anything with a large tail. It's body was looked just like a dog with fur short enough you could see muscle tone. But again it looked so polar bearish.
Actually i'll tell my dad (which is the sheriff) that there may be a huge dog roaming the neighborhood since there's a leash law. I'm pretty sure it didn't even have a collar.

This mystery might already be solved.

I spoke with my dad and he says a guy outside of town owns a wolfhound that stands waist high and larger than a great dane. But he made the comment about that being the first time hearing about it straying into town.

But yeah, if its one of those freaky looking things pictured above and came into oklahoma, I'd get my 22. I'd better ask, where in Kansas did you see it?

Anteaters are cool! Did you not see the old Budweiser advert with the anteater and the beer-guzzling ants that used to dance to "Do a little dance, make a little love, get down tonight!"? Great adverts!
I did wonder about a wolfhound, Annointer, but what about those huge beasts, what are they called again, Newfoundlands? They've got a huge face, kindal ike a bear's! And a shaggy coat. Quite a size too but not quite as big as an Irish Wolfhound, I don't think. Failing that... Great Dane?

I know this is completely off topic, but I heard somewhere that some people with this kind of dog had surgery done (on the dog) that somehow closed up part of the mouth (or something) to restrict the flow of the slobber. Poor dog.

Oh, that's awful! People just need to learn to cope! I have a lab and he drools but I just take a tissue to his chops! LOL
