emo
9203 up, 3656 down
An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:
1. Girls say they like "sensitive guys" (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how "nobody understands".
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn't even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying "It's not you, it's me." (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.
This is the sad truth of the emo lifestyle/music, and now that I look at how pathetic it really is, maybe the emos DO have something to cry about!
When she sees how sensitive and emo I have become, she'll definately go out with me!

BA, how could you?
I can hear the moaning of "See, you just don't understand me!" already. And I think I also detect some single strings being tuned already.

EMO is a type of music!! It is a music GENRE people.
Secondly, EMO is short for EMOtional.
Technically, everyone HAS emotions, therefore if your going to call someone EMO, call everyone EMO!
Stupid people make me angry!

Well, I thought it might be helpful because I could not understand why if you offered them cookies or asked locally if they would like to do something fun with you to feel better they go all freaked out and angry as if you were trying to neuter them.
My sons told me that I should stay away from Emos as I am the type who drives them nuts. They said I always study on people and try to find ways to make them happier, which is apparently a terrible thing to do to some now.

I wasn't name calling. I mean when people do it in general!
It just makes me angry. Making fun of people who hate their lives, cut themselves etc.
Its sad and uncalled for. So therefore, I found the definition quite insulting! Nothing against you.

I'm not a teen, nor do I know any. We don't have these "emo's" here in Mexico, but clinically it sounds like teen depression or bi-polar repackaged. Just wondering.

I don't think the Goths like Emos much, as it was explained to me, although they hang out at the same places. I was told the Goths are mostly video gamers and hard partiers who like being happy just fine, they just enjoy dressing in black like vampires and doing their hair in different ways. They told me a lot of Emos look like they just crawled out of bed after being in a four day coma, often with messy hair and clothes. Some even wear their pajamas and house slippers into class at the college sometimes.
Apparently the Goth look is not mandatory for an Emo. My son just now told me some dress like preps with square rimmed black glasses. Those must be the higher class Emos or something.
Anyway, to all of the UM Emos who read this, I think you would prefer me or others like me to leave you alone rather than pester you with unwanted sympathy, so this post was to let all of us older folks in the UM community know that you exist so that we won't. A lot of us are parents and grandparents, this site is not all teens, and it is a knee jerk reaction for many of us to want you to be happy and try to make it so.

emo used to be a genre of music, but now you call people emos because they act depressed dress in black and strum single strings on a guitar. in my opinion its gone past just a genre of music, your right in saying its a subculture.
music can define who we are but in this case its probably a bit extreme.

Bigotry? Because some adults think its kinda dumb to create a subculture around being moody?
I'm 32, but I'm not so ancient that I don't remember high school. At least 75% of the teenagers were depressed. Being depressed is not a fashion statement. EMOs seem to make it so - they wear their moodiness on their sleeve like a badge.
Its DUMB... to the mature mind. There are plenty of things that kids and teens do and believe that are just plain dumb to adults.

Oh yes you can. Words take on new meanings all the time. Look at the word "gay". Originally meant happy, but if you call some people gay now you're likely to get a fist in the face.
