Brooklyn Sidewalk Caves In, Swallows Woman

Dec 5, 3:57 AM (ET)

NEW YORK (AP) - A woman out walking Monday was swallowed by the sidewalk when it caved in under her.

The woman, 64, fell into a sinkhole about 5 feet by 2 feet wide and about 5 feet deep in front of a house in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn.

Firefighters rushed to the woman's aid, using metal hooks to pull concrete chunks off her before strapping her to a stretcher and removing her from the hole.

The woman, who had just picked up her two grandchildren from a nearby dance school and gone to a grocery store, was taken to a hospital Monday evening and was expected to be OK, firefighters said. She chuckled when they commented on how her groceries had spilled into the hole, they said.

The people who live in the house said it appeared the foundation under the sidewalk had been washed away.

you don't see that every day

well , at least she wasn't seriously hurt .

Ground giving way underneath you, then having chunks of concrete on top of you ... scary. Glad to hear that she wasn't seriously injured.

Good grief. This would stink. I wonder if she'll sue the city? Little things like walking shouldn't cause you such grief...

....and I was just walking along, and all of a sudden..BOOM! the world opened up and swallowed me whole....

....and then I sued the city and got a huge settlement...

..the end...

I'd listen to that story.. yes.gif

And she's extremely fortunate she's lived to be able to tell the tale. wink2.gif

suein the city for a sidewalk cavin in is almost as silly as drinkin 5000 liters of soda and suing coca cola.. no one coulda predicted that the foundation was washin away underneath the concrete..

Honestly what are the chances of this happening. It just goes to show you can never be to careful.
