Diabetes breakthrough
Toronto scientists cure disease in mice

Tom Blackwell

In a discovery that has stunned even those behind it, scientists at a Toronto hospital say they have proof the body's nervous system helps trigger diabetes, opening the door to a potential near-cure of the disease that affects millions of Canadians.

Diabetic mice became healthy virtually overnight after researchers injected a substance to counteract the effect of malfunctioning pain neurons in the pancreas.

"I couldn't believe it," said Dr. Michael Salter, a pain expert at the Hospital for Sick Children and one of the scientists. "Mice with diabetes suddenly didn't have diabetes any more."

The researchers caution they have yet to confirm their findings in people, but say they expect results from human studies within a year or so. Any treatment that may emerge to help at least some patients would likely be years away from hitting the market.

But the excitement of the team from Sick Kids, whose work is being published today in the journal Cell, is almost palpable.

"I've never seen anything like it," said Dr. Hans Michael Dosch, an immunologist at the hospital and a leader of the studies. "In my career, this is unique."

Their conclusions upset conventional wisdom that Type 1 diabetes, the most serious form of the illness that typically first appears in childhood, was solely caused by auto-immune responses -- the body's immune system turning on itself.

They also conclude that there are far more similarities than previously thought between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and that nerves likely play a role in other chronic inflammatory conditions, such as asthma and Crohn's disease.

The "paradigm-changing" study opens "a novel, exciting door to address one of the diseases with large societal impact," said Dr. Christian Stohler, a leading U.S. pain specialist and dean of dentistry at the University of Maryland, who has reviewed the work.

"The treatment and diagnosis of neuropathic diseases is poised to take a dramatic leap forward because of the impressive research."

About two million Canadians suffer from diabetes, 10% of them with Type 1, contributing to 41,000 deaths a year.

Insulin replacement therapy is the only treatment of Type 1, and cannot prevent many of the side effects, from heart attacks to kidney failure.

In Type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to shift glucose into the cells that need it. In Type 2 diabetes, the insulin that is produced is not used effectively -- something called insulin resistance -- also resulting in poor absorption of glucose.

The problems stem partly from inflammation -- and eventual death -- of insulin-producing islet cells in the pancreas.

Dr. Dosch had concluded in a 1999 paper that there were surprising similarities between diabetes and multiple sclerosis, a central nervous system disease. His interest was also piqued by the presence around the insulin-producing islets of an "enormous" number of nerves, pain neurons primarily used to signal the brain that tissue has been damaged.

Suspecting a link between the nerves and diabetes, he and Dr. Salter used an old experimental trick -- injecting capsaicin, the active ingredient in hot chili peppers, to kill the pancreatic sensory nerves in mice that had an equivalent of Type 1 diabetes.

"Then we had the biggest shock of our lives," Dr. Dosch said. Almost immediately, the islets began producing insulin normally "It was a shock ? really out of left field, because nothing in the literature was saying anything about this."

It turns out the nerves secrete neuropeptides that are instrumental in the proper functioning of the islets. Further study by the team, which also involved the University of Calgary and the Jackson Laboratory in Maine, found that the nerves in diabetic mice were releasing too little of the neuropeptides, resulting in a "vicious cycle" of stress on the islets.

So next they injected the neuropeptide "substance P" in the pancreases of diabetic mice, a demanding task given the tiny size of the rodent organs. The results were dramatic.

The islet inflammation cleared up and the diabetes was gone. Some have remained in that state for as long as four months, with just one injection.

They also discovered that their treatments curbed the insulin resistance that is the hallmark of Type 2 diabetes, and that insulin resistance is a major factor in Type 1 diabetes, suggesting the two illnesses are quite similar.

While pain scientists have been receptive to the research, immunologists have voiced skepticism at the idea of the nervous system playing such a major role in the disease. Editors of Cell put the Toronto researchers through vigorous review to prove the validity of their conclusions, though an editorial in the publication gives a positive review of the work.

"It will no doubt cause a great deal of consternation," said Dr. Salter about his paper.

The researchers are now setting out to confirm that the connection between sensory nerves and diabetes holds true in humans. If it does, they will see if their treatments have the same effects on people as they did on mice.

Nothing is for sure, but "there is a great deal of promise," Dr. Salter said.

Few family memebers have this so if true I'm going to dance a jig.

Very interesting, we may indeed be close to a cure.

This is GREAT news! w00ts! I've only recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes (strange, for a 17 year old, I thought.. it usually appears at far younger ages). Although I'm used to the daily Insulin shots, and checking my glucose levels, I'd still love to be able to completely dominate a Mars bar every now and then again

..I've been reading up that a lot of diabetes could be due to dairy products...!!!

http://www.newstarget.com/004012.html

The answer is something that's almost never talked about in the mainstream press: the consumption of dairy products. One of the causes is cow's milk that confuses the body's immune system and makes it to think that the pancreas beta cells are in fact the enemy. The immune system then destroys those cells, resulting in a pattern of symptoms called 'type 1 diabetes.'

There is a strong correlation between the consumption of milk and dairy products and the development of type 1 diabetes. Certainly, there are other causes, but this is one of the more preventable causes of this disorder. The mechanism at work has to do with the milk proteins (casein, among others) that human bodies have difficulty digesting. The presence of these proteins confuses the immune system, causing it to attack its own cells.

Getting back to the diabetes vaccine, what the scientists are talking about is injecting children with a vaccine that would prevent the immune system from attacking the beta cells in the pancreas. Once again, instead of teaching people to consume healthy products and avoid products that are only designed for other species (like cow's milk), conventional medicine is telling you to continue to eat and drink disease-promoting foods, and in the mean time, they will come up with a vaccine and administer it with a shot to excuse you from the consequences of your own dietary choices.

As with most things in conventional medicine, this treatment is designed to take away the responsibility from the patient and put it in a drug. None of this is really talked about in the news about this so-called cure for type 1 diabetes. The press headlines simply call it a 'Cure for diabetes' thereby misleading type 2 diabetics while providing very limited information to type 1 diabetics.

We don't need cures for these diseases as much as we need to start preventing them, because type 1 and type 2 diabetes are both preventable... almost universally so. And prevention is free, by the way. It doesn't require expenditures for prescription drugs, it doesn't require regular visits to the doctor's office, and it doesn't require a lifetime of insulin injections. But it does require that you stop poisoning your body with cow's milk, refined sugars, hydrogenated oils and other toxins found in the conventional food supply."

I heard that Jerusalem artichokes were beneficial....

I'd honestly rather take a vaccine than stop eating dairy products. I just love cheese too much.

Interesting that yoghurt seems ok....

You’ll see that cheese is in the meat group and not in the dairy or milk group. That’s because of its high protein content.

*

Stick to the lower fat cheeses like mozzarella, and buy cheeses that have the words “low-fat”or “reduced fat” or “fat-free” on the package.

and that you get more calcium or iron etc from seaweed than a cow!!!!

Diabetes runs in my family, so any medical breakthrough can only help. In the meantime, I shall continue to eat (mostly) healthy, get to bed at a regular time, get similar amounts of sleep every night and, last but not least, EXERCISE!

Diabetes is also genetic crystal sage....So you can't "prevent" it. Also, Diabetes Insipidus is an endocrine disorder, which in no way relates to diet.

Diabetes can be genetic, but why? Who is most predisposed to diabetes? Hispanic and African Americans, and the overweight/obese. Look back and you'll see that there is a very low incidence of diabetes in Africa and Asia. It has exploded in recent history because of the foods that our ancestors began eating in the 5o's, thanks to better preservatives and additives and antibiotics etc...as much as we hate to admit it, we are not eating healhy and we are passing the diseases and lack of good nutrition on to our children...

"This experimental work with capsaicin is an absolutely unexpected discovery that came out of nowhere (except that some Jamaican researchers saw similar results some six years ago).

Capsaicin is well-known as a food component with healing properties. While its most common use has been as a component in topical creams for joint pain, it can also be useful for preventing and treating cancer. And like ginkgo, capsaicin is a natural product so the likelihood of serious side effects is very small."

eg...on another thread..how Edgar Cayce was adamant that one shouldn't add milk to coffee or tea...as it has potential toxic side affects... Just now Scientific researches are proving that what he said could indeed be true!!!!

You should read some of his work... it's quite interesting....

z"The authors of this study should be ashamed of themselves for suggesting dairy products cause weight loss (they didn’t in their study). Even the employees of the dairy industry know better – although their ads don’t share this truth with the public. (See my April 2005 newsletter article: Dairy for Weight Loss – Another Big Fat Lie.) Cow’s milk is intended to grow a calf from 60 pounds to 600 pounds. The same researchers who did this study (from the Harvard School of Public Health) have in the recent past linked a diet high in red meat, processed meat, high-fat dairy products, and refined grains, combined with obesity and inactivity, with a high risk for type 2 diabetes in men.2 Other studies have also made the link between type-2 diabetes and more dairy food consumption.3-5

One of my greatest concerns for this misinformation is that it will be interpreted to mean that dairy foods are good for diabetics. These metabolically compromised people are at very high risk of cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, kidney failure, and blindness – problems aggravated by all the animal protein and saturated fat in dairy products. Diabetics also have serious bowel dysfunction which dairy is notorious for causing. (See my May 2003 newsletter article: Marketing Milk and Disease.) This publicity may also cause some people to believe that type-1 (childhood) diabetes is no longer believed to be due to an autoimmune reaction from cow’s milk protein. (See my July 2002 newsletter article: The Pancreas - Under Attack by Cow-Milk.) Well-informed people will not be derailed by this kind of nonsense and will clearly understand that cow’s milk is our most serious dietary health hazard."

The truth sucks, but I'll tell it anyway, There will never be a cure as long as the current FDA still stands. The FDA will do anything to maintain their profit income.....ANYTHING!!! They actually pay people to tell lies or mis-inform doctors. Medicine is a treatment, not a cure... Medicine is also considered a drug, and did you know that drugs cause addictions and unwanted side-effects that are potentially more irratable than the thing they are treating Ex. Allergies, side effects are bloating, bloody noses, upset stomachs, possible stomach ulcers, and in some cases, reduces the clotting of the blood during a wound, which if not read properly, can kill someone. I know this because. I had bipolar and I took medication for over 5 years, keyword, HAD!!! I quit my meds because I only knew it was robbing people of money. I researched the internet through my computer and found a cure. Those 5 years I took medication, and each month I felt worse, it took less than 20 minutes to rid of it all. I've now been off my meds for nearly a month and a half. Do some research on subliminal messaging, you'll be surprised on how much the FDA lied to you. I used subliminal messaging to literally CURE my bipolar. Anyone with basic computer programming skills can create this program in less than 15 minutes. It's just a brief message that flashes half a millisecond, you make the message.

Another story. One of my friends suffered momentary paralyzation on one half of his body. He was desperate to find an answer. He got 32 different diagnoses from 32 different doctors. The last one was right and it was ugly........Pancreatic Cancer. The inoperable one. The one that dooms a person to death and is irreverseable. Doctor's worst fear. Gave him six months to live He took all organic vitamins and minerals. When I say all, I mean ALL. Six months past and no death, infact he felt better. He cured himself, not only did it kill the cancer, but removed the corrrupted cells. Alright, you think it'll get him, but I got news........THAT,,, Was over 40 years ago Dude and he is alive and healthy. He now has a private buisness in which he administers his same miracle cure to patients. The FDA heard, and they were not pleased. They tried to terminate his buisness because they knew that he had the cure. He went to court, Criminal Court! The Judge stated that he did nothing wrong and he was free to go and continue his buisness. He is no company... he is your average citizen whose only intent is to cure people. His website is www.cellect.org It is private, not public, because like I said, the FDA wants their money.

If the FDA was so intune to cures, wouldn't you think they would take cigarettes off the market, they control the cigarettes. And those low nicotine cigarettes just make the problem worse because now you are smoking even more because of the low-nicotine content/ high nicotine addiction.

OR

Don't listen and dig your own grave...........sooner!!!

Niacin could be diabetes treatment
Patients with diabetic dyslipipdemia are commonly treated with triglyceride-lowering drugs known as fibrates, but niacin is more effective for raising HDL, the researchers said. "Niacin clearly increases HDL cholesterol and reduces triglycerides in individuals with type 2 diabetes," Vega said.

"Most patients with diabetes will require lipid-lowering therapy," Grundy said. "The use of statins to lower LDL cholesterol is becoming routine therapy for the majority of patients; however, this study indicates that the addition of niacin to statin therapy will provide additional benefit for improvement of blood lipids and lipoproteins in patients with diabetes."

Then there's Berberine

Berberine is found in the roots and bark of a number of plants used for medicinal purposes including woundhealing and treatment of diarrhoea. It has also been documented in Chinese literature as having a glucose lowering effect when administered to people with diabetes; yet, until now, its mode of action was unknown.

Garvan scientist Dr Jiming Ye says: "Our studies in animal models of diabetes show that berberine acts in part by activating an enzyme in the muscle and liver that is involved in improving sensitivity of the tissue to insulin ?this in turn helps lower blood sugar levels. In addition, it seems berberine can help reduce body weight".
