just seen this on a favoured website of mine and it calls into question the whole consulting that the ancients used to do ie greek's, romans and other civilisations how many decisions must have been made after these people apparently "saw" the future or could see things that us mere mortals could not? .

was oracle consultation mainly a pagan belief ?
were they as bad as this one ?
did towns, cities, or empires fall due to these consultations ?

(it may not shock most of you i believe it's sylvia brown and i've heard a lot of people in this family knock her)

Take Leonidas for example he was a King of Sparta " Leonidas took only a small force because he was deliberately going to his doom: an oracle had foretold that Sparta could be saved only by the death of one of its kings".

Also take Croesus of Lydia "In classical Greece, the pre-eminent oracle — the Delphic Oracle — operated at the temple of Apollo at Delphi. This oracle exerted considerable influence throughout Hellenic culture; the Greeks consulted her prior to all major undertakings: wars, the founding of colonies, and so forth. The semi-Hellenic countries around the Greek world, such as Lydia, Caria, and even Egypt also respected her. Croesus of Lydia consulted Delphi before attacking Persia, and according to Herodotus was told, "If you do, you will destroy a great empire." Believing the response favorable, Croesus attacked, but it was his own empire that was ultimately destroyed by the Persians."

Well the facts are that Oracles do and did exist and were listned to by kings and leaders
Mr Walker
Undoubtedly there are many people who get glimpses of the future. The difficulty is in finding someone who can sustain this, and supply it on demand. Most of the contemporary histories give us clues to the true nature of oracles. Often they were the "tool" of a powerful group, who used them to get or keep power and wealth. In many cultures the oracle either relied on drugs of some form, or was significantly different from other people, eg blind. Oracles were often very young or very old (both weak and vulnerable groups) Oracles such as the one at Delphi went on for generations, so either new oracles were found or they were bred. While oracles sometimes got things incredibly correct, they were often so ambiguous that they could be interpreted in many ways and thus never really be proven wrong. So, it would be incredibly rare to find a person capable of regularly seeing the future, and even rarer to find one free of political/religious influence, and thus able to give an accurate interpretation of what they saw. I find it even less possible that they could predict about specific people and events on demand, as most precognition either relates to personal events, or is of a very random nature.
