Man sorry for taking handicapped spot Sat Dec 16, 7:35 AM ET
UNION, S.C. - A man who parked illegally in a space reserved for handicapped drivers was sentenced to stand outside the store with a sign telling everyone about his crime.
Ragheem Smith, 29, stood in front of a Bi-Lo grocery store Thursday with a handmade sign that read "I am not handicapped. I just parked there, sorry."
Magistrate Jeff Bailey imposed the sentence. "I figured he needed to apologize in a public way," Bailey said.
Smith told Bailey he didn't have the money and couldn't afford the time away from work that a jail sentence would require. He could have been sentenced to 30 days in jail or fined $325.
"That was better than having to pay a lot of money," Smith said of his punishment. "I know I won't do it no more."
SOURCEHonestly this seems like a weird punishment... to stand outside the store with a sign..... seems like some kind of school punishment if you ask me.

Hahaha--I think it's a great punishment. The only way I could improve on it would be to make him stand out there naked with his sign while singing the entire score from Fiddler on the Roof.

This would suck but I wouldn't see the big deal if he parked in the last handicapped spot farthest from the front and if it was a emergency. I mean come on--I went to a store somewhere once and there were like 20 handicap spaces in 2 rows not counting the others in the other rows. I mean grant ya they should have plenty but if not all were tooken up then it shouldn't be made into a big deal.
And the sign wearing is a childish form of punishment for this kind of crime. Heck we all make stupid mistakes and $325 is just plain ridiculous.

A real genius. Maybe he couldn't read the sign.

Huh?
So you think it's okay to park in the handicap space if all the other spaces are "tooken up"?

Actually, this guy IS handicapped. Not only does he NOT have a brain, he has no moral integrity either. Unfortunately, those handicaps will not get you a permit to park in handicap spaces.
