Full Version: Was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galxy rubbish?

First off, I mean the film, not the book.

When I saw the poster for The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galxy, I was really excited about seeing it, even though I hadn't read the book. I immiediatly got my hands on a copy of Douglas Adam's book, eagerly read all of the reviews I could find and waited patiently for my chance to see it.

Finally, a friend lent me the film grin2.gif . Eagerly, I set up my DVD player, turned the lights off and settled down to enjoy the film.

After the credits had finshed, I switched the lights back on and sat still in astonishment. The CGI drenched spectacle had completely drained me of any enthusiam I'd first had. It was a travesty, a mish-mash of all the best bits in the book without any discernable storyline at all. The effect it had on me was disasterous. I didn't finish the book, I refused to trust any review in any magazine that had given Hitchhiker's Guide more than 2/5 and I took to scowling at the poster whenever I saw it. mad.gif

Am I alone or did anyone else feel disappointed when they saw this film?

What about the original film? It was actually much much better. Still not as good as the book (What movie is?) but much better than the latest remake. Also, the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy was the first in a series of five books. It originated as a radio program.

More on Hitchhiker's Guide.

I didn't think the movie was too bad. The book is much better though. thumbsup.gif

I loved the movie, its ace. I'd say the only flaw is that it is abit of a kiddie's film.

I liked the movie not quite as much as the book but who does....

Like people have surely said no movie based on a book is as good as the book well except 2001: A Space Oddysey that movie was the bomb. The new movie stayed relatively close to the book though and was a good adaptation. I find that most scifi fans enjoyed the movie with only the hardcore fanboys and girls really pissed at it. The movie was successful and got good reviews etc. I mean it certainly wasn't the best movie I have ever seen but it was good though and even better when i seen it the second time with dialated pupils.

I did not like the new Zaphod. What's with the southern accent and the flipping head rather than 2 actual heads. I agree that the first movie was better -- but of course, nothing trumps the books.

Haven't seen the movie, but I really enjoyed the book(s). Even though the series of 5 gets weaker as it progresses.

Dunno, I generally don't see movies of my favourite books (LOTR being one of the exceptions), because my expectations are usually too high
Tooth_and_Claw
i thought the movie had a few good bits

I saw the movie before I read the book. I loved it then, but I don't know if I still would, now that I've found out how amazing the book is.

It's always the same when hollywood gets it's hands on something of this nature and dumbs it down, dumb talentless ****s.

I was thoroughly disappointed with this movie version. The book is great and the original movie was pretty good at that time. It felt, to me, like they really didn't even care abt putting any effort into this remake and I expected a MUCH better experience than what I got out of it.
