New York ploice are acting to curb the "Molasses Gang". These theives practice one crime only. They enter small stores, where one of them takes off his hat and asks for it to be filled with molasses, explaining that they are wagering on how much it will hold.

When the proprietor has filled the headpiece, it is clapped on his head and pulled down so that he is blinded by the steaming treacle. While he struggles to free himself, the gang robs his till and pilfers his wares at leisure.

Brilliant! Doesn't say much for the shopkeepers. Maybe Silly String in a baseball cap could be the modern day version.

QUOTE
The gang was not taken very seriously among the other gangs of the period, however, and often walked out in the middle of robberies when such activities bored them. As the gang continued to commit similar crimes, police decided to take action and by 1877 most of the gang had been arrested.

I take my non-existent hat off to them.

Hmmmm ... perhaps we should require all molasses kegs to be registered, and anyone wishing to purchase molasses should have to wait three days. Also, folks should be prevented from buying more than one pint of molasses a month.
We have got to stop this endless cycle of molasses violence in this country. My fellow Democrats, I won't rest until every child in America asks, "Mommy, what's molasses?"
