The desolate Gobi Desert is said to be the home of a mysterious, deadly creature called Allghoi khorkhoi, also known as the Mongolian death worm. It is described as a fat, bright red snakelike animal measuring two to four feet in length, which is vividly likened to a cow's intestine. In fact, the name Allghoi khorkhoi means "intestine worm." The death worm is so feared among the people of Mongolia that many consider the mere mention of its name bad luck, and it is attributed with the dramatic ability to kill people and animals instantly at a range of several feet. It is believed that the worm sprays an immensely lethal poison, or that it somehow transmits high electrical charges into its victims.

The foremost investigator of the Mongolian death worm is Czech author Ivan Mackerle, who first learned about the creature from a female student from Mongolia. After Mackerle told her about a diving expedition he had made in search of the Loch Ness Monster, she told him in a conspiratorial whisper, "We, too, have a horrible creature living in Mongolia. We call it the Allghoi khorkhoi monster, and it lives buried in the Gobi Desert sand dunes. It can kill a man, a horse, even a camel."

I read about this first in DR. Karl P.N. Shukers book the Unexplained: an illustrated guide to the world's natural and paranormal mysteries

It is an interesting one for me maily because certain worms have been known to get to huge sizes.

The possibility thta this exsists is good given the wide spread tales of these things killing so many people and animals.

Well any way thoughts questions? I'll keep looking into this as time allows.
GhostShark
Tremors and DreamCatcher come to mind....
I haven't heard of this but it seems intriguing, i wonder if it shows up in any Mongolian mythological texts.
Maybe ol Ghenghis used this as his secret weapons against the Hungarians....

Tremor's ruled grin2.gif never seen dream catcher though.Sounds interesting ill trry and find more info on it.

I've heard of this death worm too. There was a story i read in a book (it was called "The Unexplained" too, did yours have "the truth is in here" written on it?) about someone who was messing around with a metal rob in the desert when he dropped dead. The cause of death was electricution. Now either there were some power lines under the sand, or there was a creature of some sort producing that shock. What interests me though, is what this thing's diet would be, and how it evolved.

Yes actually it did.

I believe there could be some truth to this. But with everything, something’s get a little exaggerated, especially when it mingles with myth and legends. But for starters, creatures of the desert normally have very powerful venom, because they don’t see food walking past that often, so they need venom powerful enough to make sure it doesn’t keep on walking.

Its like the Australian giant worm, which was believed to be a myth, a worm that can grow up to and over a meter in length, and sometimes be as thick as a adults arm. They are now a proven, verified species!

I've heard of that. Isn't there another one, The Tailseworm(don't know if I spelled it correctly, very sorry)
thepsychoticseaotter
The tatzelworm is compleately different. It has been sighted in the Alpines I believe and resembles a worm abot 2-3 feet is about as thick as a mans arm and has two front legs.

Some accounts give it a cats head and others change the number of limbs on it. also they have been likened to a Salamander or Gila monster.
Obsidian76
They could be some type of adder or spiting cobra. Not really sure on that though. I have only read a couple of stories about them. It is either the Cfe guys ( cant remeber the website, but it has to do with a group from Exeter , England) or GUST that is planning a expidition (think i spelled that wrong) to Mongolia to try and find a Mongolian Death Worm.
Benjo Koolzooie
Never heard of a tatzelworm before!
*MoG*
Facinating creature, anything is possible.

I've found a great web-site that has some more info about the Mongolian Death Worm.

And one for the Tazelwurm. Tazelwurm

Tremor's ruled

tremors was almost unbelievably lame. ohmy.gif

s-men have suggested that the death worm could be a (king)cobra and the ability to kill from a distance is only them spitting their venom, since they can do dat, and that the basilisk legend sprung from deathf worm, though that was in africa.

to does who dont know, the legend of the basilisk was at first just a snake wit a crown/diadem on its head that could kill from a distance, and was exagerated into how you think of it now. i dont know about deaf worms, but the crown would be the spectacle design on the cobras head.

I've been to the Gobi. I asked around about it while I was there. A few guides had heard stories about it; nobody had ever seen it or anything remotely like it. All seemed to agree that it was a scary story told to children. There's no way a deadly worm-like creature that kills at a distance could live there without being responsible for more deaths. Although it is the most sparsely populated part of Mongolia, there are tourists, campers and nomads crisscrossing the Gobi desert all the time. I don't know about the part that lies within China, but I imagine it's similar.

The deadliest thing I saw in the Gobi was the camel that tried to throw me off of it. I still hate camels.
Mad Manfred
From what I've heard...it's just an undiscovered snake that spits it's venom.

Everything else is obviously an exageration.

Maybe this is a creature that sleeps in certain parts of the year under the sand.Maybe their is caves under the sand.I think that it is quite possible that this creature exists. The desert is too big to know where everything is,and i'm sure parts of the gobi are still undiscovered...

hmm, I really hope the Death Worm isn't just a made up story. This is a really interesting cryptid. I'd love to see a documentary on it. This is another fascinating cryptid I wish they had more info aobut. The deathworm is extremely interesting. It's also a really cool cryptid. I'd like to go on an expedition to try and find it, but I'm a little unsure becasue of how lethal this thing is supposed to be. I'd love to actually view it from a distance though.
Mad Manfred
I think there is truth behind it...though as Canadian said...the Gobi is too big for us to find such a small creature that lives underground...we probably wont know for another hundred years or so.
Redneck
Don't you think there would be more sightings, more deaths attributed to this thing if it were real? It's not as if the Gobi is uninhabited. Just because it makes a good story doesn't mean it has any basis in reality. I'm pretty sure it's just a legend.
jacob
The true name is the Olgoi-Khorkhoi.Try this link.

Do you have any idea how big the Gobi is?Didn't think so.Most of the desert is uninhabited, many parts of the desert are still unexplored. It is impossible to know for sure...

Um ... yes I do, I've been there. Have you?

It doesn't really matter if you haven't, but don't go around arrogantly telling me I don't have an appreciation for the geography. And there are more people there than you seem to think. Most of it has not only been explored, but is traversed by tourists and nomads.

Did you know that? Didn't think so.

Chill out - no ones looking to start an argument - A forum is to express ideas and thoughts in a simple and nice mannered way buddy - Don't start blaming things on Canadian - it seems to me he has a little bit more experience...(Don't take me wrong)
Deimos
hmm, maybe the deathworm could be a distant relative of the Tatzelwurm or the Lindworm? Although these 2 don't have the deathworm;s unique abilities, it could be possible. I wonder how how it would be to find one of these guys. I mean, imagine digging into several feet of earth in the scorching sun. I think for us to discover this animal it's probably just going to take some emxtreme luck and hope one turns up dead just on the surface of tha sand.
Mysteryman
I wouldn't even bother looking for it tongue.gif

I came along this during research and never really looked into this...

Just want to discuss it...

I read that several months ago. Very interesting creature. Other than 2nd hand stories, there is no solid evidence. It is neat though.
Mysteryman
Pretty scary too...

Good article! thumbsup.gif
I stand by the fact that i need to see a specimen before beliving fully in it's existance, although i do believe that it's more likely to exist than several other creatures of 'myth' but probably exaggerated as second-hand stories generally tend to be.
Mysteryman
Thanks! Definitley understand you their. Its definitely or at least a highly possible existing creature unlike other mythical (most-likely) fictional creatures!
~TheBigK~
Yes, I definitely think this could exist, I doubt it shoots lightning from its eyes though lol. I have to say it sounds pretty dang scary though.
