QUOTE
There are a slew of film adaptations of video games in production right now, Hitman, Alice, and Postal, for example. Now, according to director Christophe Gans, Silent Hill 2 can be added to that list.

Gans, the Antibes-born director of the first Silent Hill movie, has revealed that a second SH film is on the way and that it will correct the mistakes of the first.

The original Silent Hill, released on April 21, 2006, told the story of Rose Da Silva, a mother who sets out to find a town called Silent Hill, which her daughter Sharon calls to in her sleep.

Gans confirmed in an interview with French magazine DVDrama that "there will indeed be a Silent Hill 2 and it is officially ordered and is already well underway. Once he has finished his adaptation of Driver, Roger Avary will be [working on the script], helped by his friend Neil Gaiman."

Roger Avary is a Canadian-born director, producer, and writer. He has previously worked on the screenplays for the first Silent Hill and Killing Zoe and won an Oscar for his work on Pulp Fiction.

British author Neil Gaiman is most famous for his series of Sandman graphic novels and has also worked on screenplays for the TV series of his novel Neverwhere, as well as Mirrormask and Princess Mononoke.

However, Gaiman's actual contribution is now under some doubt, after a post on his own blog stated, "Yesterday I discovered pretty much all of my FAQ messages were people asking whether I was really going to be writing the Silent Hill sequel with Roger Avary. I'm afraid that I don't think I am--I mean, it's the first thing I've ever heard of it, and I'm sure that if they make a sequel Roger would want to write it himself."

Gans' original statement has since been retranslated, so until there is clarification from Gans or Gaiman, some mystery still shrouds the title's development.

Gans added that he may not have time to take on the project himself, due to his commitments on the adaptation of another video game project, Onimusha.

When asked who he would like to see direct if he were unable to, Gans told DVDrama that, "If I cannot take on Silent Hill 2 myself, the director who does would need to continue in the same style as the first film. One does not want to make a Hollywood-style movie, and I think that it makes sense if the director of the sequel is European--in the best case scenario, French."

He also revealed that he was planning a special two-disc collector's-edition DVD of the original Silent Hill, but that would be a long time coming, possibly not for two and a half to three years, and that he intends to start work on it only after finishing up Onimusha.

I'm quite excited for this. The first was amazing, despite it's flaws. The fact Gans says he will "correct the mistakes of the first" makes me feel even better about this. This man knows what he is doing, thank God. Too bad I can't say the same for directors of other game adaptations.

Also, I knew the 2-disc edition of Silent Hill would be coming out eventually - it was inevitable - but not for another 2 or 3 years? That dissapoints me greatly. I really hope it will be worth it.

Finally, on a side note...Gans is working on an Onimusha film? Very, very good things can come from this. Time will tell.
feelgoodhitofthesummer
loved he first film, cant wait for a sequal!
Tillghast
This is great news! And...Onimusha too? Damn, lets just give all the film rights to him until further noticed. He may just redem the video game movie.
girty1600
I look forward to it!

An Onimusha movie has bin talked about for awhile now...it may be one of those franchises that some movie company bought the rights too but never did anything with it (Crazy Taxi).

The first movie was good but why in the world was Pyramid Head in it? And why the 25 foot-long knife? That was more comical than scary..
I hope the second stays a lot truer to the story line, like the article promises..

You know everyone said the same thing about George Lucas before ep1 was released.....well you get the idea.

When it comes to game2movie adaptations i find they don't work as good as comics do. The reason being is that games ussually lack story line like street fighter, mario and mortal kombat.

Silent Hill made a good movie because the game itself had a story to follow that simply worked well as a film.

Pyramid head is probably the most popular silent hill character, thats why he was in it, plus if he wasnt in it, how many people would complain that he wasnt? as for the Great Knife, thats directly from the games, theres a meaning behind the knife that the movie didnt get into

It was said ages ago that if a second film was ever made, it would be based around the history of Silent Hill; they could have easily wrote a good part for Pyramid Head then, and kept strictly true to the game at the same time. Not that it was really a problem any way. yes.gif

True to the game? Have you watched Silent Hill? They changed the gender of the main character...
BurnSide
And the creators agreed that the main character should have infact been a woman in the game. The only reason Harry was a male was because the videogamign world at the time was male dominated, and the main audience of the game would have responded better to a male protagonist in that type of video game.

Rose IS Harry, they're identical. One however, is a mother and the other a father.
The movie was very true to the game, the closest any game movie has gotten. Not just in terms of storyline, that's too linear. In terms of how the game is translated into movie.

I'd have to agree. Iv'e seen a lot of video game to movie features, and almost all of them have dissapointed. Silent Hill I would have to say, to agree with Burn, is the cream of the crop. I'm looking forward to the next one, and especially Onimusha. Both VG series I have played through several times. Let's hope a certain Uwe Boll can learn from GOOD filmmaking, and take a step down. *cough*

I agree but it isn't a direct translation of the game is what I'm saying...I don't think they should copy the game point for point either. I also think the movie did a good job in the translation. As long as its close enough to the source material its ok by me...but Doom and Resident Evil strayed to far away for me.
Lord Umbarger
As long as they don't make a clone of "Resident Evil". They had TWO chances to make a good movie and all we ended up doing was spending our ten bucks to see what could've been any old zombie flick from the mid 1980's.

Silent Hill really stood out from the pack of dreck Hollywood was dishing out at the time. It was creepy and desturbing. What more could you ask for?

a better plot

and a movie that follows a games story line is that so hard seriously
Shakezulah
Why would you want a movie to follow a game's storyline? That's ridiculous. What would be the fun in watching it? You already know what's going to happen so there would be no suspense. Silent Hill was very close to the original story without following it exactly. It would be incredibly boring if it did. The plot in the movie was actually pretty good. The script, however, could have been much better.

true i think i wrote it wrong dont worry i understand what you are saying. Its just sometimes it makes it easier to follow like on Final fantasy im sitting through the whole "spirits with in movie" waiting for squall or someone its just nice to see is all so you can .......No wait i get it man no im sorry i take back.
except i dont take back my comments on Silent hill movie it sucked big time following story line or not it was just a generally sucky film plus i dont like horrors so there you go
seeking
dont take this question the wrong way, but did you understand the movie? everyone ive ever spoken to about this movie either loves it or hates it, and the one thing in common between all of them is that the ones who love it understood it, and the ones who hate it had no idea what was going on the entire time.
