Adopt a Nun
It's a gift that keeps on giving.
You can adopt a nun to pray for you for an entire year!
And the money you pay goes to a good cause.
When the Salesian Sisters needed to raise money to care for their aging nuns, Sister Mary Rinaldi realized they could charge folks a small sum for work they were already doing
"We could offer our prayer and our support and our friendship and that solidarity with them and that's how the adopt a sister program began."
At first, the program raised $5 million to build this retirement home in North Haledon, New Jersey.
Now, over a decade later and 3,000 participants strong, Adopt-a-Nun continues to pay the bills for the elder nuns, and reaches farther than they expected.
"We have encountered a huge population of people who are hungry for God and for the spiritual, and it's not only Catholic persons or Christians who are adopting a sister, from the Jewish population, we have wonderful human beings that are part of the program and very integral."
The Gambetta family has 2 nuns: Sister Daniele is 29, and Sister Gerard, 92 years old.
"These sister's here are a part of our extended family. It's like having an army of prayer behind you."
"Absolutely, I believe in the power of prayer. I believe that's why we have two healthy strong intelligent little boys."
Sister Daniele says she can't vouch for miracles, but the Gambettas are on her short list.
"I keep them in my thoughts and in my prayers, that they're well, and doing well and that they stay close to God."
But Rosesanne James is convinced that her nuns do more than keep her in the fold
"It's a direct line to God and it's cheaper than any phone call."
"It's a two sided spiritual relationship, I know that they're praying for me as well, and it's just so beautiful."
And, they make great gifts.
"Can't have enough nuns and I give them for birthday presents, Christmas presents...it's better than a scarf."
But in case you find a lump of coal in your stocking, or can't swing a donation for a nun of your own, Sister Mary says have no fear - they're praying for you anyway.

The suggested donation to adopt a sister is about a hundred and sixty dollars a year, and the people who do it say its worth every penny, but the nuns themselves also get something out of the deal and that they say is priceless.
