Full Version: SECOND POLL ---- for Sleep Paralysis
Unexplained Mysteries Discussion Forums > Unexplained Mysteries > Ghosts, Hauntings & The Paranormal
Lady_Anvilabeel
Here is another poll continuing from the first poll for Sleep Paralysis because unfortunately each poll only has a limit of 3 questions per poll...

I'm interested in looking at the frequancy of SP episodes in relation to the theory that the more times you experience SP the less intense the fear of the experience becomes.

For example, Say Person A experiences SP 1 - 3 times a year, then it could take that person 10 years to have the same frequancy of experinces as Person B who experiences SP once a month.

I'm interested to know if experiencing SP more frequantly in time is a factor in the experience becoming less intense over time or not.

A little like flying for instance, those who fly regulary ie, weekly or monthly have much less stress with the concept of flying than those who fly once or a few times a year or less!

This is looking into the idea that the more regularly practised and used to something we are in a space of time, the easier and less a deal it becomes.

What about a section where you've never had it? or are you not interested in that figure?, if so forget i wrote this! lol
Lady_Anvilabeel
If you have never had SP or never felt fear?

I can't edit the poll sad.gif

If you've never felt fear, then just give your answers in written form here, don't take the poll...

this will make the Meds go home... ...last time promise!!! - I cringed too!

I've experienced SP between 10 and 20 times and suffer SP 1 - 3 times a year
I suffer SP 1 to 3 times a year the intensity of fear has ceased over time

fear has turned to anger and confrontation! ...funny yet sorta true starting too picture them(SP baddies) as scurrying Jawas! more as time fades since the last SP episode (approx 3-4 weeks)........................B

UPDATE :that new Disturbed song kicks A%$!!!!

Update: 1-18 1pm :since verbally refering to SP baddies as "sneeky wimps" (last nite) -best night sleep in a LONG time!!!

She means are you trying to suggest to have the option "Never experienced SP", or the option "Experienced SP but never felt fear".

Is anyone able to suffer from SP, or only people with certain genetics etc.?

As far as I understand anyone can suffer from SP.

I have had less than 10 (more like 6), but all in the past 3 months. The fear has definately ceased over time, but I think it has more to do with the knowledge of what it is now, rather than the fear that I didn't know what was happening to me. Does that make sense?

I experienced SP last night a few times, and the old hag twice. It wasn't like the old hag stories I usually hear though. The first time I was dreaming and my dog reached up and pulled me off the couch and started wrestling me. I couldn't breathe good and I couldn't speak, and couldn't move much. Eventually I got him off me and was like b**** what the ****? Then I realized I must have had an episode of SP. The second time in my dream I looked over while sleeping and saw a little girl standing there. She took her arms which kind of stretched out like she was trying to hug me or something. Eventually I fought her off of me, not by conventional means. Took me a while, but eventually I was able to stand up and go check on my mom and dog.

In between those episodes my dreams were really messed up. They would go lucid on some of them, and it was so cool because I actually watched the process in which my dreams shift from one to the other. Eventually I took Anvil's advice about getting a drink to stop the chain of SP.

The strange thing is when I fought off these 2 old hags, and I fought a few more things in my dreams, this voice talked to me. It was like, "Niiccee joob you diddd wellll."
Lady_Anvilabeel
Yes corakay original.gif I think with experience and the knowledge that it can't really hurt you and it will pass makes it less intense and fearful over time.

The key things I'm trying to find out is if the entity experience is mostly only experienced in the early stages when fear is at it's most intense and knowledge/experience is at it's lowest. thumbsup.gif

Thanks Raptor original.gif and yea I think anyone has the potential to suffer an episode of SP at any time for whatever reason.

I voted: I suffer SP every few months the intensity of fear has ceased over time.

The fear has ceased because I no longer (or lately) have seen anything resembling a shadow or a scary "old hag" apparition during my SP episodes. What has changed is that now I can feel when it is about to happen, and will either wake myself up, sit up in bed or even go get a drink of water, so I can shake off that feeling.
Opus Magnus
I've found a way to ward off the old hag if anyone's interested. It works for me.

Anvil,

I've only had the one episode of SP - that I can recall. I suppose I was a bit frightened with the experience, but I 'convinced' myself I had overcome the entity I thought was present and so this may be why I have never experienced SP since.

Don't know how to plug this into your poll though.
Lady_Anvilabeel
I would say vote for I've experienced SP under 10 times and Suffer SP 1 to 3 times a year and I suffer SP 1 to 3 times a year the intensity of fear has ceased over time since you have never had another episode yet original.gif

experienced it about 12 times, happens every few months, and its level of fear has declined. I still fell alot of fear the first split second though, before i realise what it is. original.gif

One thing I have to mention about sp. What can trigger this. I get sp alot and know how i can go into sp. I've done it before and documented the times i've had it. I get sp whenever i'm really exhausted. Its a combination of a 5 day workout routine (weights, cardio etc...) and Sleep deprivation. I usually get about 4 to 5 hours sleep per night and workout alot. This gets my body to the point of exhaustion. Why do i do this you ask....Well, I have trouble sleeping and i like to workout alot. And maybe this is a subliminal action. Things you do now that you question, but later on in life you know why you have done this because these actions leads you towards what you were meant to do in life. For the past 5 years i've been getting 5 hours of sleep per night due to my work schedule and trouble sleeping. Maybe its my own doing with benefits. Meaning, getting my body to prevent exhaustion. If my band starts touring then i know why. Anyways..... If anyone who has never experienced sp. Maybe....you can experience sp by depriving yourself of sleep and working out 3 to 5 times a week. That's if your willing and curious about sp. (one day, about 3 years ago i slept for 17 hours. That's how sleep deprived i was during that year)

Cheers Anvil, done. thumbsup.gif

Thanks for the guidance. Should have thought it out myself but it was very late (early) when I posted and brain wasn't quite up to thinking at that hour!

Bear in mind my experience was roughly 20 years ago so may not be statistically relevant.

I think it's great that you're making these polls! (A lot of people in my family experience this, on my mom's side at least).

I've experienced SP upto 3 times in one night.(Continuous SP). It usually happens if I haven't slept well for a few days. Hmm I'm just about due for another one, seeing that I've been staying up for a few days, and it's 2:37 a.m. here.

The evil presence, or entities, is only some times. Mostly I have vivid dreams, and the inability to wake up, sometimes during an SP episode, I'll even choose what to dream, or imagine.

On another SP topic, I was told I may have experienced Astral Projection during my SP. Weird, but interesting, and I believe it to be true.

God bless you guys.

I didn't know what sleep paralysis was until I came here yesterday. blink.gif

I've been suffering from this since I was a child, but I didn't know what it was. I always see a figure... cloaked, bird-like features, wrinkled hands with long nails, withered form... nasty looking thing. When I was little I had so much trouble sleeping because I was terrified that I'd see the thing again if I went to bed. I came to the conclusion that I was dreaming as I got older, but couldn't figure out why it felt different to a usual dream. Everything is always so vivid, so real.

The fear hasn't declined. I am absolutely terrified every time, even though I am telling myself at the time that the ugly figure isn't real.

The thing I don't quite understand at the moment, because I only started reading about this yesterday, is whether or not you're actually completely paralysed when it happens. I've had episodes where I've been in bed next to my husband, and I've been scared silly because the thing is standing over me again, and I am trying to move my hand under the sheets, to hit my husband and wake him up, without the figure seeing me do it (just in case I'm wrong and it is real after all... in which case I'd prefer it to think I'm asleep and can't see it laugh.gif ). Anyway, I've managed to thump my hubbie and wake him. So, is it just partial paralysis we suffer?

I've experienced it over 20 times and the fear has decreased. Nope, nothing I can think of at the moment.

Not my blinking experience lol. I suffer from these quite a lot, but I have to ask has anyone had this happen:

I have a cold, my nose is blocked up, now last night this happened - just about to drop off to sleep, I suddenly found , due to my cold, I was having trouble breathing, suddenly, I got that familiar rushing sound in my head, that feeling that any minute I would be unable to move, the only trouble was I couldn't breathe and I really thought I was going to die LOL - shouldn't laugh really, I was a tiny bit scared. I managed to move, waking my husband who asked if I was okay (he's used to my unusual behaviour). Ensuring him all was fine I thought "all I have to do is not sleep" but we all know that doesn't happen lol.

On a more serious note, I am a bit anxious, what happens if I get SP and can't breathe due to a stupid cold??
Opus Magnus
I doubt your body will let you die. If worse comes to worst calmly focus on snapping out of it.
Lady_Anvilabeel
I've had the not being to breath a few times and it's horrible. Like Opus said, I don't think our bodies would let us die like that. I'm thinking the inabilty to breath happens when the nasal passages are blocked by being face down in a pillow or with laying at a certain angle that squashes the throat. And with being paralyized not being to open the mouth or turn the head to breath. I think an SP state lasts about a few seconds - to a couple of mins the most original.gif

i dunno why but i just cant get my head around the scientific theory for SP it didnt really help after i read that article about scientists thinking that they proved ghosts dont exist and its all in our mind, i just think theres more to it, im not saying that the scientific theory is wrong because i know a lot of people believe it, maybe the reason they believe it is fear, iv never had SP but i think people belive the theory to escape the truth, what i mean is scientists had no other choice but to prove its not supernatural or paranormal because if they did tell the truth there would be panic all over the world and people owuld be freaking out.

just my theory
