It was a crocodile, actually, not an alligator. The main reason people hated this movie so much is because they didn't know the movie was really about a crocodile, not a serial killer. I did research before I went to see it. I was kind dissapointed when I found out, but I still knew what I was going into. It is actually based on a real crocodile that still exists today and has supposedly killed over 300 people, although the number of casualities resulting from the croc's attacks is significantly smaller. It's size mentioned in the movie, 9 meters (around 27 feet) is rumored to be nearly it's actual size, which is between 21 and 25 feet, most likely. So the fact that the crocodile is so big in the film isn't really unrealistic. It's speed, in proportion to it's size is pretty acurate too.
Personally, I thought the movie was pretty good. Not great, but not something that should be completely ignored, either. It's at least worth renting the DVD, if not seeing in the theater. It's intesne, creepy, violent, bloody, and also hilarious (thanks to Orlando Jones). The scenes with the croc were well done, not stupid or extremely unrealistic, and the effects were better than most of it's kind. The acting, for the most part, was surprisingly good. Dominic Purcell plays the main character, who's name escapes me at the moment, and anyone who watched Prison Break knows that that dude can act. Orlando Jones (MAD TV) also stars, and provides some of the best parts of the film. Some bits between other characters were a bit cheesy and cliche, but they didn't detract from the movie as a whole.
Besides the croc, the characters have an African warlord to worry about, who is on their tale for most of the film. (No, this is not a spolier. If you read any description of the movie on any website, it tells you this clearly). This whole set-up provides a somewhat unexpectedly large, and most definately welcome subplot that blends nicely into the movie, giving it thrilling and action-filled scenes apart from the horror.
The gore factor of Primeval is somewhat high. It's not so much gory as it is bloody. Very bloody. So if you think watching a massive crocodile rip people to bloody bits is a little too much, then I wouldn't suggest watching it, even though it IS completely awesome.
Yeah, thats all true. good job describing the movie. if it were actually that good ai wouldnt be so disappointed. it really was a plonker poor excuse of a film..dont waste your hard earned funds on this film, wait till the DVD comes out and rent it cheap.. you'll be glad you did.. cheers
Overall, I'd say Primeval did what it set out to do, despite the fact that it was advertised as being about a serial killer. Animals CANNOT be serial killers. That's just stupid. Just because it supposedly kills humans for fun instead of instinctivly does not make it a serial killer. Either way, I enjoyed Primeval. I know past killer croc movies like Lake Placid have been stupid and incredibly cheesy. This film takes itself a bit more seriously, while still maintaining plenty of fun moments. It's not, by any means, a horror classic. It doesn't do anything new for the genre, but if you're looking for a sufficiently scary and bloody horror movie, then don't miss this. I give Primeval a 7/10.
