Hello all
I was in Avonmouth near Brsitol this weekend watching my brother playing in a band at the Avonmouth Tavern, as usual I had taken serverl pictures of the band and the local's having a great time,
When we returned home found this picture which is a bit freaky!
I dont smoke and cant stand the stuff but this picture is thick with smoke!
Also a great Ord for good measure even if it is dust still pretty good.

Hi, I think that is cig smoke - check the guy sitting in the distance with a cig in his mouth as well as the ashtray.
One good thing about the smoking ban in Scotland is that smoke is now one factor nill in pub/Inn pics

Is it possible that it didnt' appear all that smokey but the flash from the camera reflected off the smoke making it really stand out?

Agreed. It may not have seemed like it at the time but the flash hit it and poof, instant highlights. I've had a full roll of photos from a Halloween party one year ruined because I got drunk was was smoking the whole time I was taking photos. Play with it a bit, it won't be hard to recreate.

The fact there is a guy with a cig in his mouth and the ashtrays it makes it impossible to take this pic as anything other than smoke

a camera flash would illuminate smoke, smoke can linger thickly in humid/stuffy conditions..

Cheers for the replys, even my 4 year old girl can see the face,
The landy lady of this pub knows this pub is haunted she told us a few tales, she said that when she is stocking up and she will clean the beer lines, she will turn the gas off connect the water flush the beer then will pull through the beer, reconnect the gas but when she returns back to the pumps no gas! she returns back to the celler the gas has been turned off, she turns the gas back on then returns back to the bar to pull the beer through no gas again! you have to turn the gas reallly hard to cut it off she advised! she said this can happen five or six times, plus she is the only one in the pub as both doors are bolted from the inside

I see the face too...but it kind of looks like it has bunny ears on the head...but I am an artist so I could be seeing what I want. lol.
I'm with Blueguardian on the smoke "arm" acting weird though.
Also, I smoke and I KNOW that is not smoke exhaled from the guy waaaay off yonder. That's what smoke looks like up close, usually trailing of the lit end...except for the weird arm thingy.
And did you guys say this was in Scotland? Scotland is so XTRA haunted...I'd believe it.

Jan 26 2007, 12:37 AM
Regarding the smoker being so far away, smoke drifts and it does stay in the room even though it is often not visible to the naked eye (especially in darkened environments).
There is also the possibility that someone simply walked by and blew a puff in your direction before the shot was taken.
It is possible that this isn't smoke, but smoke is certainly the most likely explanation. Occam's razor gets my vote.

There is something that looks facelike when I view the photo. I don't put to much into that though, we are actually hardwired from birth to recognize human faces and it is completely normal to see faces in natural objects. Just look at all the Virgin Mary and Jesus pieces of toast you see on Ebay.

Yeah the old toast one that was something else! shame I cant sell this on ebay.
Funny thing is my neighbour cant see the face yet her husband can,
If you look closely the smoke where the face is formed is tightly packed as opposed to the smoke around it which is flowing freely.

I'm not quite sure what to make of the pics. My brother took some pics awhile back at my mom's house. They showed similar smoke-like swirls and such. He swears he wasn't smoking when the photos were taken, so I don't know. I do know that I had a lot of experiences in the house while growing up there.

I began working professionally as a photojournalist in 1985. Today, I'm a professional writer and photographer.
It's smoke.
Smoke. Smoke. Smoke.
I know. I've had the same thing happen when I covered public meetings and such.
Someone mentioned that the camera flash can bring out things you don't see, or see very faintly. This is absolutely true! In a room with a number of smokers, smoke can linger and swirl about for some time. I smoke a pipe on occasion, and often see its smoke hang in the air in layers and swirls if I get into an extended puff-fest.
Actually, you can use smoke to your advantage for photos. The flash brings it out, so you can send a puff toward a creepy headstone in the evening and photograph the stone with flash. You'll get an odd mist around the stone. Makes a good photo for a Halloween card.
Orbs? Oh puhleeze! It's dust in the camera, on the lens or floating in the air. In the old days, before digital photography seemingly made everyone a professional photographer, we called such spots, "crappy photography." Today, it's the source of much mystery and speculation.
It's dust. Dust and smoke. And the human brain's ability to create faces out of darned near any arrangement. Put two dogs on a page, and draw a line under the dots, and you instantly have a face. It's something we're born with.
As to the red ear muffs ... weird. Was the band so LOUD she needed them? Did the heat go out?
And just WHY didn't you get photos of the gal dancing on the tables and bars? Huh? I would have preferred that!
As for the pub being haunted, that's likely. Pubs seem to draw a lot of ghosts. Frankly, if I were dead I'd want to haunt one: beer, laughter, music, dirty jokes, pretty girls and the occasional barfight for high entertainment.
I'd be a randy ol' ghost too!
I can picture some cute waitress leaping in the air exclaiming, "Gatofeo! You nasty ol' cat! I know you're in here! And if you grab my bum one more time, I'm calling in a herd of exorcists to send you where you belong!"
