I hate televangelists. They take peoples money and they are loud. Its really annoying when they touch someones head and say Jesus healed him and the person falls. And who thinks Tammy Baker is scary?

In Australia, we don't have a big Tele-evangelist problem. The only time they're on regular tv is on Saturday night/Sunday morning from about 4am-6am. Heck, I've never even heard of Tammy Baker edit: never heard of jimmy swagert, either. Though from what I know of tele-evangelists, they don't seem to be the most godly of people. They seem to prefer quantity to quality. IF they can get numbers through the door, numbers on television watching the show, then that's enough for them, it seems.

Though that's just my observation, of course

I think you're giving them waaaay too much credit by calling them religious leaders, Supra. It's not like any of them speak for the majority of Christians or are considered leaders in any way by the majority of even the denominational Christians.

I wholeheartedly agree. These people are scumbags of the worst sort...preying on the gullible. They hire people to act like they're sick or maimed, then miraculously "heal" them...which helps them con more money out of people. They do not care.

Truthfully,I'd like to see all of them (starting with Pat Robertson) shot, drawn & quartered, guillotined, burned at the stake, drowned with cement boots on,hung from a short rope on a high branch, tossed into a pit of acid, fed to the crocodiles or lions, shot from a cannon at a thick brick wall...etc...etc.

Oh,and yes...Tammy Faye Bakker is extremely fugly.A young lady I once knew had a child who happened to run across a picture of Tammy Faye Bakker after she had been crying. Her make-up had run all over her face, and had made her look like a demented clown. The poor kid had nightmares for years after seeing that face.

Iams,it's unfortunate that these people *do* have an extremely large following. It's also possible that they have more of a following than the regular Christian churches.Their followers do treat them as spiritual leaders, even though they do not have any real power beyond what the gullible give them (luckily...otherwise we'd all be dealing with a lot more idiocy by now).

Two words...

Billy Gram. (Or however you spell his last name)

Tammy Baker... *cringes* No mommy.. there is a monster in the closet!

You can make the word "evil agent" out of televangelist tongue.gif.

I like Tammy Fay, she seems really sweet; and the poor woman has been through so much. She just needs to get rid of some of that makeup. I do like watching (even though I am not a Christian) Joyce Myers though. She doesn't seem to be your "typical" televangelist. And Pastor Melissa Scott, although I don't think she is a televangelist.
Chauncy
One thing is for sure these televangelists are big business, money making machines!! I think I followed the wrong career path.

With every new type of medium there created is a new pulpit to exhort the masses, and the pulpiteers that sermonize behind them become increasingly less evangelical and more cartoonish ..... why?........because they must become a character in order to individualize themselves from the others, for they are all chasing after the same nickel.

But just because you are a character doesn't mean you have character.

I wonder what they called them when there was just radio?.....Amevangelists? Audiovangelists?

I'm not saying that they don't have a following, Supra. Frankly, I thing Dr. Dobson is a good guy and have read several of his books, but what I'm saying is that none of these people are in any way universally followed by Christians.

Also, I think you've taken the "Televangelist" title a little too broadly. Not every person who has a national or international ministry fits into the "stereotype" of the televangelist.

You seem to see something wrong with Christians practicing capitalism. Why?
GoddessWhispers
Actually Tammy Baker is dying, so if one believes in earthly karma I'd say she's paying back what she ripped off, in spades. As is her ex-husband Jim Baker, since it's killing him that the heir to his seed , his son, is gay. I'd wager both Tammy and Jim would give all the money they stole, for all that to be different as their gods will.

Come on son, how do you get the above quote out of my post????The thread pokes fun at the Televangilists , claims no one really pays attention to them, ha ha ha ha ,, Im saying that is BS, the christian Coalition is a huge network, it influences if not out right makes alot of the laws, This is public information, the few that are raising awareness on the Telepimps have generally opted out..

Now I too have read Dobson and cryed my eyes out, my sister in law thought he was a great fellow too , now she has two very messed up kids teens actaully, she followed him to the letter, even though her family urged her not to.......I personally wouldn't treat an inanamate object the way Dobson feels you should raise kids.......
The christain coalition has relied heavily on mass ignorance no one questioning anything....

I promise to question everything my leaders tell me. I promise to use my critical faculties. I promise to develop my independence of thought. I promise to educate myself so I can make my own judgments.

Lights,

Welcome to the "Church of Suicidal"
We'll have a sermon and wonderful recital
But before we go on, there's something I must mention
An important message I must bring to your attention:

I was in meditation and prayer last night
When I was awoken by a shining bright light.
Over head, a glorious spirit
He gave me a message and you all need to hear it!

"Send me your money", that's what he said
He said to "Send me your money"

Now if you can only send a dollar or two..
There ain't a hell of alot I can promise for you.
But, if you wants to sees heaven's door,
Make out a check for five hundred dollars or more!

"Send me your money", do you here what I'm saying?
"Send me your money"

Now give me some bass, um yea that's how he likes it
Now give me some silence, for all you sinners
Now give me some bass, yea that was funky
Now take them on home Brother Clark!
send me your ...money...
send me your ...money...

Here comes another con hiding behind a collar
His only god is the almighty dollar
He aint no prophet, he aint no healer
He's just a two-bit-godd@mn-money-stealer

Send me your money
Send it, you got to send it
Send me your money
You hear what I'm saying?
Send it, send it
Send me your money

Now how much you give is your own choice
But to me it's the difference between a prosche and a Rolls Royce
I want you to make it hurt when you dig into your pocket
I want you to make it hurt!
We'll take cash, we'll take checks
We'll take credit cards, we'll take jewelry
We'll take your momma's dentures if they got gold in them

So whose gonna be the next king of the fakers
Whose gonna take the place of Jim and Tammy Faye Baker?
See my momma, she didn't raise no fool
Cause you can't put a price on a miracle
Amen

Interesting, my parents used a lot of the advice given by Dr. Dobson, my wife and I have used some of his advice also and we have friend who raised their kids that way and have kids who have gone on to be everything from doctors, to lawyers, to missionaries, to soldiers, to teachers, to business owners, etc.

I have found that the thing that messes kids up most is lack of consistency. I see parents who start out by treating their kids one way, when that way doesn't seem to be giving them the results they want/expect, they change to another method, and then another, and when the kids end up messed up, the methods get blamed.

Which time would you be referring to!? wacko.gif tongue.gif (And Oral made his goal $ every time he used his gods gonna murder me, line.) "God's gonna call me home..." Clearly, not one person in his congregation with a checkbook or cash in their hand at the time, thought to ask themselves: "Isn't that where we wanna go?" You'd have thought Oral was weeping because god said he was gonna send him to hell, if he didn't come up with the cash all those times. But nope, there's grown man crying like a baby, scared to death, god's gonna take him to heaven unless people send money to keep him here. crying.gif Gullible is one thing, but abject stupidity should be hit with a bucket of cold water. laugh.gif

James Dobson is just another hard-line Fundie-type twit.

He may have degrees in the field of child development, but on religious issues...he's just as intolerant as Pat Robertson.

Hmmm... it came out in 1990, not sure what dates the roberts fund drives have been.

I've never cared for TV evangelists only because people (in my anecdotal experience) pay more attention to the personality on TV than the message, and then take the messages in whatever ways make them feel good about themselves.

To me if it's popular (even within a segment of the population), it's suspect (not just limited to religion).

All that said, I've no problem with Dobson's techniques in general, I love the childrens songs from the Bakers, and I can't argue against the effectiveness of "netting" although I do recognize the damage "netting" can cause. Or "trolling"... whatever you want to call a mass effort... strip-mining... spamming... whatever. Effective and damaging to the "environment" at the same time.

My favorite is Creflo A Dollar. I mean come on! Who would send money to a pulpiteer with the last name dollar?!

Here's an excerpt from his website that tells you how to give a donation.

QUOTE
Give A Donation
Praise God! We thank you for your financial support of this ministry. Every seed that you sow is used to fulfill our mission of "changing the world" for the gospel of Jesus. Your giving is very scriptural.

Jesus promised us in Luke 6:38

"Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give unto your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again".

Pray over your seed and expect an abundant harvest. Know that your seed is being sown into good ground and will be used to teach the Word with simplicity and understanding throughout the world. God bless you for being obedient!

Click your country flag below to sow your seed online:

Kenneth Copelands's website for donations:
QUOTE
Giving Made Easy
makes your monthly giving simple, safe and effortless. Just set up an automatic deduction from your checking account right here on our Web site, or by calling 1-800-600-7395. Jerry Falwell Ministries runs their own school called Liberty University, and you can send a donation to help students there because as Jerry says:
QUOTE
I applaud these young champions for choosing Liberty, where God's name is exalted, God's Word is believed and taught, Biblical morality is taught and where sexual promiscuity, alcohol and "partying" that takes place on most secular college campuses is not permitted.

After making such a brave choice and taking a bold stand for righteousness, how can we think of sending even one of these young people home for lack of funds? I CANNOT!

Son that is interesting how you define good parenting as in what job they get...

son most parenting is based on what results the the parent wants and expects, many parents live through their kids few allow a child to develop naturally, few care really about including the child in the plan...lol..........What you don't know is the benefits of a child that is reared in love and encouragement, in a enviorment that is conducive to the childs emotional and mental and physical well being...Well being, being of prime value.....There is little well being in a child that has been reared in a punish and reward system or a child that is told he is sinful and worthless by nature.............The idea is that my kids are responsilbe, self correcting, self advocating, contributing, capable, humanitairian, loving peaceful beings that are a benefit to the whole from the womb...

The child that has been reminded that he is the perfection that he seeks, needs nothing outside himself to be perfect has standards on behaving that are exemplary....If you have a high self esteem meaning you place value and merit on yourself and your capabilitys how do you think you will be to all others????? to the world you live in????? Sort of like taking really good care of your self because thats who you are for no other reason because there is no other choice.... .....those are the kids i have.....the most important element in a thriving parent and child relationship is trust and love and a person that feels valued.. becaseu wehn a kid truly values themselves they automatically choose what is best.........You want your kids to come to you on anything and i mean anything, few parents have this sort of relationship, or models for this.....i am so passionate about parenting and to be my best is the example i set, i too self correct and self advocate, care for myslef have humanitarian pursuits really only dothe thngs i want my kids ot copy, this requires alot of attention to detail.... as an example as they say kids mimic us more than they listen to us, i cover my bases...i have a rersposnibility to put kids in this world that are a benefit a contributiio to the whole who can adapt to the whole....

i would be concerned on the exclusive aspect of raising kids in a relgious doctrine, kids should have ample oppourtunity to socialize in many different enviorments, the ability to adapt blend can not be underestimated, it makes for a richer life experince and the child is a natural peace maker....When kids are home schooled many folks don't understnad the importance of what the deeper meaning of socialization is...
