Exactly. Its like saying "I'm pissed cause they dont show enough white people on BET!"

The only white people I've seen on BET are the cops from The Wire.

That in itself makes me laugh.

People get too carried away. Like how they want to ban the "N" word. I think it's an appropriate word for the non-working poor no matter what race they are.

How about the Chihauha (sp) from Taco Bell? You know, the little taco dog? How about the gecko with a British style accent? I wonder if Foghorn Leghorn is racist aginst white southerners?

A lot of the older cartoons and comedy shows are deemed racist now. Remember that episode of the Three Stooges where they had the black cook in the "haunted house" where he had the big eyes and the hyper southern accent? "I's sho is leaving'".

Maybe even Indiana Jones is racist. There were a number of times that he said tha the hated Nazis and they never showed any Germans who weren't Nazis.

Hey, if it's funny, leave it alone.

That Geico Gecko seems to have grown progressively less distinguished. I used to look at him as a gentleman, but his new accent is just too low class for me.

Am I wrong or did Scooby Doo have a few episodes where the guest animated stars were the Harlem Globe Trotters.

For the scooby snacks, DUH! Why do you think Scooby and Shaggy always had the munchies? Did you ever notice the haze that followed the van? The smoke around Scooby and Shaggy?

. The Trotters always acted like they smoked in the van before they hanged around "those nosey kids'. That's why they acted so stupid, just like scoobie...

Why edit the old cartoons and pretend it never happened? It's ridiculous. People just need to get a sense of humor. Or just freaking die.

Yer right, Coldethyl.
Go put on your flour sack dress, no shoes. I'll put on my overalls, no shirt and big ol' boots. You can brain them with your big ol' cast iron skillet --- after you've made a big ol' pan of frahd possum an' grits!

It always amazes me that I certainly couldn't say that blacks have rhythm, love watermelon, enjoy wild dancing and weary flashy clothes.
BUT white folks --- especially those in the South --- are routinely portrayed as ignorant, often violent hicks with twangy-accented voices.
It's racism, pure and simple, to lump one group into a negative stereotype.
Today, on a Salt Lake City (Utah) radio station (KBER) I heard an ad for "KBER's White Trash Wedding," complete with hick, twangy voices. Yeeeehawwwww! I'm not sure what the event is, some kind of radio station party. It was disgusting.
I found myself thinking, "Hey Bruthas! Grab yo Ho and yo 9 and git yo black ___ down to da baddddessstttt ... maddeessttttt Gang-Bangah's Ball! Best be showin' up! Don' make me bust a cap in yo ___!"
Imagine the outrage that advertisement would generate, and rightly so.
But the "White Trash Wedding" is okay because, after all, they're just white people.
Ticks me off.

Let us White Folks make a deal with the minorities in this country: We'll let you make fun of whites, if you let us watch stereotypes of you. Bring back all the old cartoons, The Frito Bandito, Amos & Andy, Jack Benny Show and even Bonanza with the Chinese cook, Hop Sing.
Besides, you already have your own minsterel shows: It's called Hip Hop videos. Be honest, rap and hip hop are blatantly racist.
Sound fair? Now, shaddup already! Sheesh!

I don't recall which ancient philosopher said it, but there is great truth in what he said: "All comedy is based on tragedy."

That might have been for Star Wars. I remember there were a lot of protests because all of the clones were Latino, and the Latino community got angry about that and said it was racist.

I always thought that that actor was from New Zealand, and not Latino. Of course, that in itself is insulting, isn't it? To be mistaken for a different minority? Oops. Sorry. Wasn't he a Maori, or something? I've probably offended lots of people now, and I certainly didn't mean to. Was he Latino?

People need to get over themselves.

Okay, I just looked for him (Temuera Morrison, the actor that played Jengo Fett, the original of the clones) and he was born in New Zealand. So not Latino, but a Maori. So all those people got upset for nothing!

Funny isn't it? Black people can say what they like about us whites on national tv but if a white says something about a black person it causes an uproar.

I remember when a chalk board was always allowed to be called the black board.

and this is where the term "Brain-storming" comes in. Just before I finished school (approx 2 yrs ago) we always said brain storming but it changed to planning or something alike.
Apparently the term "Brain-storming" offended epileptics. Let me tell you I used to suffer from epilepsy and I didn't care abut that it was called Brain stormig.

Oopsie, going a bit off track there. Sorry

But TBH I agree that the real meaning of "Racist/racism" is long gone and it has a new meaning to it.

Oh, also watch Fantasia sometime. During the second act with the centaurs, it's been edited and butchered so badly that the animiation no longer matches the music. Why?

The original had "pickaninny's" or a "sambo" like centuar creatures that served all the tall blonde caucasian centaurs. Disney has edited it so badly that it doesn't even match anymore.

And, I remember when Song of the South came out. I loved that movie. The music, animation and real life film mix was incredible. Aside from Fantasia and Pirates of the Caribbean, SOS was the ONLY other Disney flick I liked. I saw it as more cultural than racist... granted, I haven't seen it in over 20 years because it's not available.

The childrens book company "Golden" used to also put a Briar Rabbit and Briar Fox story book, and yes, the "tar baby" was in it. I wish I still had those books, they'd probably be worth something on E-bay today. hahaha

Of course it probably doesn't really even bear mentioning, but cartoons like that one weren't produced for children. If I'm not mistaken, they were produced for adult military troops and shown on bases. This was the first time I'd seen that one.

Yeah and Luke removing Vaders helmet in ROTJ at the end was a metaphor for how black people really wanted to be white....

People try and see racism in everything it's absolutly ridiculus, if anything whites have more racism directed at them now then any other race well except people in the middle east. I find it funny that comedians who aren't white can make fun of us all the time, yet when we do it and make fun of black people even in a joking way guys like Jesse Jackson will jump on us for it.

Personally I think racist jokes are hilarious. However malicious attacking based on race is wrong. It's funny that i can go to jail for calling a latino a spic or a korean a gook yet when they call me a cracker or vanilla face etc it's alright. You know i really don't think it's a serious problem cause racism doesn't bother me. What does bother me is that it's ok for every other race to make fun of whites and muslims, fair is fair it should go both ways.

Just because The Flinstones and The Jetsons had an all white cast doesn't make it racist.
Having the clones from Star Wars be played by a minority actor doesn't make it racist either.

Racism is discrimating and/or hating another race.
pintsized
What some of you all are pointing out, is not racism, that is correct! But they're stereotypes. Minorities back then in the day never got to be shown as characters developing in a show or anything. Thats the difference. Secondly, some//most seem to be animals (the "diverse" characters some are pointing out).

Get a sense of humor or die. Wow so much for having a "free country" huh?

I guess my question is this: "What's wrong with whites being just as proud of their controversial ancesters as blacks are of theirs?".

Because they suffered and are proud for what their ancestors have endured. For whites?... So you want to be proud of people who fought FOR slavery??? (I'm guessing this is what you mean by "controversial" ancestors). Theres nothing wrong to be proud of grandpa/grandma, just as long as you're not proud of their racism/ignorance.

Otherwise you would say it wouldn't you? Now..why shouldn't you say these things? Well in this day and age, you really think racism against blacks and other minorities aren't still here? There is still oppressions and a HUGE gap in terms of wealth, health, and education (which are socio-economic reasons; but they're mostly minorities).

As far as OLD cartoons being racist.........DUH!

yes.gif yes.gif
Piney

It is all context! All the Polish and Italian jokes in the 1970s and those respective people telling them. Many Native Americans laugh at the WB cartoons that portray them as bignosed redguys getting their butts handed to them by Porky Pig at the calvary fort ( Injun Joe Super Chief). 'Custer of the West' which is still shown on the Encore channel portray bloodthirsty savages . They were not written by people who hated Natives. They just applied the sterotype of the day.
I often thought of the old colored woman on Tom and Jerry as a portrayal of my Auntie Helen Cuff. I never thought it was racist and my father who is 1/4 black use to love ' Song of the South' and it's conglamerated Ashanti/ Coastal Algonquian folktales about Bre Rabbit ( Nanabu in Nanticoke- brother Rabbit).
These PC smoes forget about context. Hating a race and portraying a stereotype of the time are two very different contexts.

As far as the Flintstones, we don't know for sure what people back then really looked like as far as skin tone. I would think that probably everybody was dark skinned to some degree. I mean, early man was out in the sun and the elements an awful lot. They'd need to be dark for protection. So probably everybody looked fairly the same, barring individual physical features.
