i think the flintstones and the jetsons are racist because the flint stones takes place along time ago and in that show there are no hispanic people , african-americans , or asians and the jetsons take place in the future and still no hispanic people or african-americans or asians

what do you think

This is one of those cases where people take things too seriously. Just look at what era they were made in, generally a lot of people back then were racist. Same reason all the main Scooby Doo characters are white.

i agree you are reading far too much into this, its just a TV show chill out

Oh?
Well, Scooby Doo was brown! Obviously a minority! And don't you think that Scooby and his blonde buddy were just a weeee bit too close! And that phrase, "Scooby Snacks." Puhleezzee ... obviously a code word for something deviant. I don't wanna know.
Yogi Bear was brown! Boo Boo was yellow! Atom Ant was red! Sylvester is black (with a white belly and muzzle, admittedly).
Why, there are all kinds of minorities in the old cartoons if you just open your eyes!
And if you ask me, Wilma and Betty were unnaturally close too, if ya know what I mean.
<grin>

Actually, there were two crows in the cartoons of the 40s and 50s that were definitely made to emulate blacks of the day, with their mannerisms and speech. In the turbulent 60s and 70s they became "racist," just as Amos and Andy were. Or Rochester, Jack Benny's servant. Yet, they were funny then and still are today.
I especially liked Rochester because, though he seemed ignorant to his employer Jack Benny, he always got the best of him. Rochester was actually mighty sharp, and they often showed this.
Are they racist? Oh definitely. But then, we still see portrayals of whites as being unhip, lacking rhythm, dressing weird and speaking blandly. Many black comedians over the years have poked fun at whites --- and as a white man I wasn't offended. I laughed! Richard Pryor did some hysterical routines, in which he emulated unhip whites. So have Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock.
Mel Brooks, a Jew, often makes fun of his own. So have a host of Jewish comedians through the years.
What the heck, it's still funny!
I'm a short, fat, ugly desert cat --- and I often describe myself that way to others. The name "Gatofeo" means "ugly cat" in Spanish.
If you can't laugh at yourself, you're missing the best audience.

But a lot of people think it is okay to poke fun at white people but as soon as someone pokes fun at a minority it is considered racist. I don't mind, I just find it kinda interesting.

I once did a huge paper and speech about humor and why it was funny. For something to be truly funny, there has to be an element of truth to it (or reality at least).

As far as OLD cartoons being racist.........DUH!

So it couldn't be that the largest viewer group in the demographics was white at the time?

There are shows and even entire channels now for minorities. Are they racist now for not including white people?

I wouldn't say it''s racist...racism implies that you hate a certain race. B.E.T doesn't hate white people it just focuses on one demographic...The Disney Channel is made for kids...Spike for guys, etc.

Most cabel networks focus on one demographic or genre(Comedy Central) because it works better that way...because if your looking to watch something funny your fist choice will be Comedy Central because you know there will always be something funny on...where regular channels like ABC or Fox have a wide variety of shows of multiple genres so your not sure whats going to be on.

And because there are so many channels nowadays it would be silly to have every channel have a wide variety of shows of different genres...its best to catoragize it...like a comedy channel, cartoon channel, christian channel, Women's channel, etc.

Just because you don't include a certain demographic doesn't mean your a racist.

I wonder how much hell they'd catch for a "White Entertainment Television". heh (I know WET is taken already!)

Mel Gibson's Jewish? Never heard that before.
Lord Umbarger
I've never seen a white charachter on "Sanford & Son" that was portrade and anything but either goofy or incompetant. I'm not the least bothered by it. Same goes for "The Jeffersons". Maybe that is the way that many blacks at the time really viewed whites. Maybe they still do. Many whites once thought that most blacks were like Amos and Andy! Remember minstrel shows?

On the radio, Amos and Andy were actually white men playing black characters

Why is it that the phrase "Black Power" is taken to mean "Black Pride" but, White Power" and "White Pride" are always taken to mean racism? Is it possible for a white person to be proud of their heritage without being accused of racism?

I guess the same can be said of historical leaders. Nobody will say that Martin Luther Kings birthday should not be a holiday, even though he was an admited communist. The same for Rosa Parks. She was not a racial warrior. She was talked into not getting out of her seat by the American Socialist Party. Both are concidered American heros even though they came to fame during the middle of the cold war!

But, what happens when someone wants to put up a statue of a Confederate soldier in a small south Georgia town? They are deemed as racist hate mongers. Many people here trace their ancestery back to men who served in the army of the C.S.A. Are they racist because they are proud of thieir great great grandfathers? Oddly enough, one of the largest all-black regiments in the Civil War came from my hometown yet, the Confederate Monument that was in downtown for over a hundred years has recently been moved to the outskirts of the county!

I guess my question is this: "What's wrong with whites being just as proud of their controversial ancesters as blacks are of theirs?".

Read and learn:

racism
n.
-The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
-Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

Only place I have ever seen back to back re-runs of HeeHaw and Dukes of Hazzard. NASCAR abounds. Country music video's, shows like Trick My Truck (where the trick out long haul truckers big-rigs). That might as well be White Guy TV. Same as BET, only different.

That was me Drippy. I was inspired by Chris Rock and the old, first season of In Living Color, and how they cracked on their own racial stereotypes. Mayeb I'll make a thread on it in a different forum. It's rpetty interesting from an acedemic persepctive. It was a great speech! I made the whites, blacks, and hispanics cringe, while the lone asian dude laughed.........then I got to asian drivers! Doh! After it was over and done with, the asian guy told me he would rather take the bus than drive with his Mom! We all busted a gut!

Maybe in the new ones because people started to complain.

Actually, this is all mild to say the least. You would not believe the racism in cartoons during the 40's. wacko.gif And it's not just including white people only, they are direct insults.
OlDrippy34
I saw a Bugs Bunny where he straight up murdered like an entire battalion of Japanese soldiers with grenade filled ice cream.

Also saw some other one narrated by some Mammy from Gone With the Wind type broad, it was called "Coal Black and the Seb'm Dwarves" or something.

Racism is always funny when it's an adorable cartoon.

OlDrippy34
Didn't Scooby Doo end up fighting the Legion of Doom or something? Those crossovers were bizarre.

I just remembered another Bugs Bunny I saw when I was really little, but I loved...it was a typical Bugs Bunny cartoon, only instead of being hunted by Elmer Fudd or someone like that, he was being hunted by some little stereotypical Sambo type character. It was great.

And that one where Elmer Fudd is a Mountie, and he's about to execute Bugs Bunny via firing squad, but then the firing squad puts on blackface and starts singing Dixie instead. Glorious.

I remember the star wars fiasco. Implying racist propaganda seeded in all the character associations and the story line. Oh hell, now I'm in for the law suits. I have to remember to be sensitive to the many cultures across the world that frequent theaters and may take offense to such an observation! blink.gif

I think the Star Wars thing was actually an insult, by those groups that sought to bring the allegations of racism in the story, to the people they implied the story insulted with racial undertones. I swear, it's as if in saying Lucas did that purposefully, the reactionary activist groups are as good as saying there's a relevant correlation to imply a cultural representation in sci-fi characters! Even when George Lucas had no intention along those lines at all. To say that's what those groups believe is there in subtle allusion, is to say the allusion fits! Who's fault and insult then, is being broadcast?! wink2.gif

I agree PC think is getting to be like the Orwell classic "1984" and newspeak! Thought police, blackwhite, etc... all those key phrases in the book that alluded to fearing to think or speak outside the approved norm, under authority of "Big Brother". http://www.newspeakdictionary.com/ns-dict.html

If you live in a country with mostly white people, and everybody who works on the cartoons are white, how can it be racist if the show features an all white cast?

People are getting so uptight these days! It's like, if you want to make a movie that isn't "racist", you have to include at least one of every race in the movie. It's rediculous.

Now, it would be totally different if all the robots in the Jetsons were colored black, or if the Flintstones had black servants or something. But simply excluding a race from a program does note denote an attitude of bigotry.

If you make entertainment, you make it for a key demographic. If said demographic is mainly white, then you advertise and cater to that. It's why McDonalds Commercials in the southern states show cowboys and hispanics and such, and McDonalds commercials in western Canada show hockey players, and Indo-canadians.
