I've had a number of encounters with Christians, myself included, who claim they "know" what God's voice is like. They describe it as thoughts entering their heads when they read Scripture. I've seen some Christians make awful decisions based on such a "voice" and using methods to test it. This includes relationships being ruined, dropping out of school, ruining reputations needlessly, all leading to destruction. Each time, the person can't see it - and it makes sense that it comes to God due to common misconceptions about common teachings.
I believe God's will needs to be recognized first as who He reveals himself to be... Fear the Lord, and receive Wisdom. God is patient and works on the soul as well as the mind... The Holy Spirit doesn't give us wild thoughts or euphoria, but peace and understanding. It shows us what we need to do now in order to reach the goals God has revealed in our lives later, and gives us the strength to handle the part of God's kingdom that God places in our hands at the moment. I'm no expert, and this is different for everyone.
Satan will try to force you to do something desperate - we're attracted to this for some reason... God is patient, and works much deeper than evil or ourselves can reach.
Have you struggled with knowing what God's voice is for you? What kinds of mistakes have you made because of it if any? What is a more accurate picture of what God's voice is like and how to discern? How do we know what God's will is for our lives?
I think these questions are essential, because so many Christians are overly simplistic and misguided about this topic, and it leads to profound destruction.
