user posted image rAs the picture clearly shows, Antonio Vasconcelos - he's the one at the back - is no ordinary new-born baby. Dubbed "Super Tonio", he startled staff at the Jesus Kumate Rodriguez hospital in Cancun, Mexico, not to mention his mother, by arriving via caesarean section on Monday weighing a whopping 6.6kg (14lb 8oz), roughly twice the average weight for a newborn baby. Crowds have gathered at the windows of the hospital's nursery ward to marvel at Antonio, who is already 56cm (22in) long and drinks prodigious amounts of milk."We haven't found any abnormality in the child, there are some signs of high blood sugar, and a slight blood infection, but that is being controlled so that the child can get on with his normal life in a few more days," said Narciso Perez Bravo, the hospital's director. Antonio's parents, 23-year-old Teresa Alejandra Cruz and Luis Vasconcelos, 38, are remarkably unfazed, noting that their daughter had weighed a not-insignificant 5.2kg at birth.

"It's good, because now with this one, we'll have a pair [of big babies]," Mr Vasconcelos said. Despite Antonio's size, he is not the biggest baby born in recent years. In January 2005, a Brazilian baby arrived weighing 7.6kg. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the heaviest baby was a boy born to a healthy mother in Italy in September 1955 weighing 10.2kg.

Ouch. I have only had to see one baby being born, and that was more than enough for me. I hope in my career I never have to deliver another...too much pain, too much stress....just creeps me out.

I know owmen that work in the labor ward and they think that it is the most beautiful time to share in a persons life; the very start...I told them that I had no interest in delivering another baby(although I would if duty called), but to be honest I'd rather deal with the guy that just got shot in the chest with a pistol...I can deal with that...I can fix that...babies on the other hand...ughh... stress... too much stress...

2 things - Wow, the parents of the child are 15 years a part! Is that surprising though? & Can anyone estimate how tall this baby will be in 18 years?

A couple of things...well 3 things
  1. Unless I missed it the article makes no mention of the mothers condition. If she had gestational diabetes it makes sense that she had an above average child.
  2. I believe by age 2, doctors can calculate pretty accurately a childs height as an adult.
  3. ouch

My Dear Fellow Forumers,

I have three news clippings on huge babies. They are:

1. Saudi Gazette, 1987 Sep 7
France, Big baby: A 21-year-old woman has given birth to a 13.8-pound (6.3-kg) and 22.4-inches tall (56.9 cm) boy--twice the size of normal babies by caesarian section in Strasbourg to parents whose names were given only as Isabelle and Jean-Leon.
The newborn, Stephane, is so big he is wearing clothes meant for a one-year-old. (UPI)

2. Arab news, 1987 Nov 14, Huge baby born
Teresina, Brazil, Nov. 13 (AFP) -- Twenty-seven-year-old Maria da Gloria Costa Lima gave birth to a 7.45-kg (16.4 pounds, 62-cm (24.8-in baby boy in northeast Brazil.

3. Saudi Gazette, 1987 Nov 14, Giant baby born
Teresina, Brazil, Fri, (AFP) - similar story as item 2.

These babies are above the normal size and weight of babies born. Are there other similar news items?

Credit due to the news bureaus, UPI and AFP, and the newspapers Saudi Gazette and Arab News.
