This is the first photo taken with my phone on the January 31st 2007. I just really liked the way this skies've looked.

Then I turned around and took a shot of the full moon. Note some spot below the moon.

Then I took another shot at it so the part of the building would make a picture. Next day, when I downloaded this picture to my PC I notice a UFO next to the moon. Needless to say there was nothing visible to the naked eye there at the time of the picture taken.

My exact location and time of pictures:
Smithfield, RI. January 31st 2007 17:23
P.S. All pictures here are the links to the Google Album where you can see them in their true resolution 1280×960 pixels.
You can see that the object is egg-shaped and shaded as it lighted by the setting sun, which is already below horizon from the my point of view. This is pretty high hill.

Interesting. Due to the picture quality you cant make much out. Could it be a star that the phone was picking up on, 2 different ones depending on the angle of the phone? Dunno. Wait and see what others say

It's not a star (too big). You can see a star on the first picture.

Hi,
It’s hard to tell what it is, mobile phones are terrible for taking pictures of distant objects, one thing I’ve noticed about all the UFO videos, pictures are of bright objects. I know if i was visiting another world i wouldn’t turn up in a bright space ship, i’d camouflage it somehow. But back to the pictures its too hard to tell,

Read PS in original post. It's shady site is on the Moon site. It's lighted same way as the Moon by the Sun.

I'd say the most likely scenario is thsi phone has a plastic covering over the lens of the "camera" and it was probably reflecting any number of lights around, the streetlights, the moon iteself, onto the picture from the inside of the plastic covering the lens;

Its not a star, the moon would outshine it in this position at this time of the evening. Uranus was something like 1.2 degrees from the moon on the 31st but you would have needed to view it from a telescope or binoculars and a tiny dot it would have been. Your camera see's more than your eyes do, I dabble with astrophotography and I know this is a fact. You can tell the exposure time was about twice as long (maybe more) as you actually need to image the moon which made it appear over saturated and made details impossible to see. This is also why something much dimmer and washed out by the moonlight would appear on the picture, yet you may have missed it with your eye. Not saying it's anything unusual, or anything on your camera lens, just offering my opinion after several years viewing and imaging the sky. You could very well get something on your camera that the human eye couldnt. I thought your pictures were as decent as you could post them and better than most. thanks for posting.

Actually based on the Date and Time - You are seeing the "Evening Star" - VENUS. Star map of the that time and date in question is provided. It is very common for Venus to be mistaken for more than it is - it has fooled a lot of people through out time.
Click to view attachmentIf you look at the basic location and such - yes this does very easily fit. Actually this was one of those night where you actually had a number of planets in FOV with a good scope. But Venus NO scope is needed.

Hello All,
Im in agreement with Jjbreen,
planets and stars are mistaken for UFO's alot of the time, not all the time but alot of the time.
keep posting pictures/videos for others to scrutinise because one day someone might post a picture/video of the "real deal",

Thank you for your comment, you're correct on the part of the Venus, but on my pictures you can see Venus only on the first photo. At this time Venus is in the Western sky and you can pick on it even through last sunlight!

The UFO is in the third (and possible second) photo, where the Moon is located and it's in the Eastern part of the sky.

So the mystery remains!

P.S. First photo is just part of the story line.

Well actually there are TWO stars that are very strong possiblity - Both are under 1.0 mag. and less then 50 LY away. Here is another screen capture of the sky that night looking East.

So do please do not take this "personal" it's really not. It's a fun mystery and as S. Holmes would say, "The game is afoot!"

In no case I would take it "personal". I respect yours opinion and just trying to prove my point of view in which I have to disagree about both stars mentioned by you. On mine screenshot
one post above they both present WAY above the Moon, as the UFO is on the left side of it. Please make sure you set following coordinates: Lat: 41.909637 Long: -71.516452 and do another screen.

ok, you are quite correct those stars are above. So at this point I have to admit - with out further information - basically you have something UN-identified in the picture.

I have my doubts of that too - see:

On the contrary. The link you provided shows a time lapse. I have a few of these flares on my website and it looks exactly like that video. I could be wrong because I wasn't there to see the whole event but there was a IF over that area. I like the video and it's still and unknown. Good video.
