Sony Pictures to translate game to screen.
US, February 8, 2007 - It has been revealed, some eight months after the project was first announced, that the film adaptation of the popular videogame Metal Gear Solid is being spearheaded by Sony Pictures.
GameSpot has the word from Sony Pictures Entertainment vice chairman Yair Landau who revealed, "We're working with the Metal Gear guys. It's a very cinematic game, it really lends itself to movie telling. But the question is, 'How do you translate Snake's experience into a full arc that conforms to what audiences expect on the large screen?'"
That's a question that has continued to plague the makers of videogame-to-film adaptations, though fans no doubt have high hopes that Sony and Konami will get the formula right for Metal Gear. The film project was first revealed at E3 last year via a pamphlet that was distributed by Studio Kojima, the development house owned by Konami that is run by Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, though details regarding what Hollywood studio was involved in the project were kept quiet until now.
In addition, Landau also mentioned that Sony is investigating other games for possible film adaptation, including an EverQuest movie. Of course, Sony has also been behind the Resident Evil film series and Silent Hill, both of which originated as videogames themselves.

No actors or directors have been tapped for the project as of yet. Earlier speculation that German director Uwe Boll would helm the project has long since been dismissed after he announced he was in talks with Kojima to direct the project. The announcement of Sony/Columbia Pictures developing the live-action Metal Gear Solid film confirmed that Hideo Kojima will be an executive producer on the project. Michael De Luca has been tapped to produce the film adaptation. With the confirmation of the Metal Gear Solid film, Sony Pictures now holds possibly the most talked about film adaptation of a video game, though Warner Bros. has a big-screen version of World of Warcraft on the make. Both would have paled in comparison to a Peter Jackson version of Halo, though that project has since collapsed.
