It is an attachment titled "mail" and it's from "mail.google.com" but it does not specify a file type

This only happens on my work pc and about 5-8 boxes pop up. But it doesn't happen everytime I open my page to gmail. It never happens on my home pc

Bleh, this is a hard one to search for. With errors and such, they are pretty easy to google. In this case the attachment is called "mail", searching for: gmail mail attachment, etc. just brings up tons of irrelevant information, especially with no file type. sad.gif

What software are you using to open your mail? A version of Outlook or some type of gmail software, internet explorer/mozilla? Maybe it can be blocked from opening somewhere, or reinstalled as j4jak mentioned. Have you tried to open it, or does it disallow you because it doesn't know the extension? I might hesitate to do that if it's a potential virus, but if it's not doing the same thing at home it sounds more like a bug than a virus.

Like epstine mentioned.. What browser are you using at work as apposed to what you are using @ home. Also, this could be an issue on google's side as well. I work in a production enviornment where weve had issues with one of our round-robin webmail servers, seems the mime settings ( server side) were off on one of the servers. which caused a few people to get a "download" message after logging in. However, this is probably something on the local machine..

Put the address in your mail filter to block it. Strange it only happens at work though..

Hmm...I'm wondering if it is a bug/glitch with the browser because at work I am using customized version of IE, which is standard for my company. At home I am using the most updated versions of Firefox and EI. I need to stress that this is just used to check my personal email not related to work. For work I use MS Outlook Professional.

I did try to open it but closed it when I got the prompt to choose which application I wished to open it with.

file type relationship is broken sounds like... I like opening things in notepad when that happens, see if I can figure out in the internals what prog Should be used...
possible you have an app installed at home that's not at the worksite or keeps getting uninstalled at the worksite or something...

Kind of sounds like a spyware/adware or malware program. It can essentially be a virus that takes over when a particular program is run, and in your case gmail.

I wondered that (spyware/adware/malware), however it doesn't happen every time I open EI to gmail only about half the time. Also it never happens elsewhere.

I'm sure your up to date with anti virus software. I use spyware blaster (free) or something similar and see if that clears it up. Certain adware will try to hide and my not activate everytime. When it does, i assume you immediately close the program. If you didn't, i imagine it would continue installing or doing its thing.
Daughter of the Nine Moons
I tried to open the file once but because it was missing the file ext type I was not able to open it.

The anti-virus program is updated nightly through the network. I do not have admin rights to my work pc therefore I am unable to download any spyware programs.

Ok so you are opening gmail with MS Outlook Pro? Meaning you can replicate this error by opening only Outlook and not the customized version of IE?
