Could someone please tell me how I can convert a video file into a .GIF image?
I'm trying to convert a video file (that I took on my cell) into a .gif image. The file is 141 kb and is currently marked under .3gp (ie: the video file is saved as dancing.3gp) which is how it was imported from my cell onto the computer. Hope this information helps.

What I use for turning videos into GIFs is called Camtasia studio. There's a free trial at
http://techsmith.com/download/camtasiatrial.aspIt's mainly a screen recording/video editing program, but it's great for creating GIFs from a video clip. Although I doubt it will recognize that format, you'd probably have to do a screen capture to import it (Not that you'd lose any quality).

worked great, but you were right, I had to convert the 3gp format into AVI by installing ANOTHER program and a codek pack...but it's done now! lol

SUPER © is free and can do that. It's very sophisticated too btw; you could convert between numerous video formats.

If you still need it, I want to advise to you the program I use -
Video UserPic. It's not a free tool, but has a trial version.

I haven't tried it, but i would assume it'd be possible capturing each seperate frame of the movie, then putting each frame as an animation frame in Adobe Imageready?

I've ben trying to find a way to edit GIF's. I wanted to remove the first three frames of my avatar so it moved more smoothly but I don't have photoshop. Are there any editing programs for OS X that are free?

I have a question too. I took a short video with my Kodak camera today, and also used the audio for an EVP which I got. The file is too large for this site. Is there an easy way to just post it? JN

You can create animated GIFs using Avidemux/GIMP, both of which are FOSS (free/open source software), and multi-platform.
- Install avidemux (here) and GIMP (Windows here Mac here and I shouldn't have to tell linux users what to do)
- Open avidemux and then open up your source video
- Use the bottom scrolling bar to go to where you want the GIF to begin
- Press the A: button under the title "Selection" (bottom right)
- Use the bottom scrolling bar to go to where you want the GIF to end
- Press the B: button under the title "Selection" (bottom right)
- On the left hand side, where it says Video, click the drop down list of all the codecs. Choose MPEG-4 ASP (Xvid4)
- Move two buttons down, and click it (filters)
- Near the center is an option called "Resize", double click it
- Use the bottom scrolling bar on the window that pops up to resize the video (It uses percent, and starts at 100)
- Once you got it resized to however small you want the GIF, click Ok, then click Close, which brings you back to the main window
- Click File > Save > Save Video
- Open the video you just saved and click File > Save > Save Selection As JPEG Images (you're going to want to save the images in a directory of their own, or it will get very messy)
- Close avidemux and use GIMP to open the very first JPEG
- In the window with your JPEG in it, click File > Open as Layers, and open every other JPEG (shift-click)
- Click Filter > Animation > Optimize (For GIF)
- Click File > Save As, and choose GIF, then make sure it is animated
