Does anyone know the names to some of the way old books that were written hundreds of years ago that have the names of ancient creatures, and symbols?
Or even if you don't know the names to them, the authors, or even a few good keywords I could use in Google.
Google has so much stuff on it, it makes it hard looking for something like this.

Thanks.

I found this bibliography, but with nothing as old as you were asking for.

No problem. I see what you were talking about, it is pretty hard to find the info you're looking for.

You might be interested in Grimoires by the sounds of it; books of magic. Careful now. Slippery slope.
Try the Key of Solomon, Johnan Weyer, The Book of Abramelin, The Grand Grimoire, The Sworn Book of Honorious, stuff like that, also look into the Kabbalah.

Search Wiki for grimoires, the external links bit on the bottom is good.

do a google search on king james 1st of england, he used to love all that sort of stuff and wrote books about it....witches, demons, monsters etc...should find some fun links from there......
otherwise try something REALLY old....like Herodotus...he wrote about all sorts of things that we still know about today....flying serpents, the phoenix, cyclops etc...can find a full text if you search 'perseus project' on google then go for 'classics' then you can limit the results to english translations. youll find him there.
ovid's 'metamorphosis' deals with greek gods that transformed into various beings to have sex with mortals, and generally entertain themselves.
The source for the werewolf legends can be found in a book called 'the golden ass'....so can the talking donkey out of shrek.
what sort of beastie were you looking for? thumbsup.gif

Thanks.

And to answer your question:
I am looking for anything you can throw at me..
I'm just a mythology freak.
I'm into all that stuff, monsters, spirits, ghosts, demons.
Fun stuff.

I'd also use history word's to see what you can find, Also if you go to "ask Jeeve's" and type in what your looking for you might have a easier time, I have found stuff there that i couldn't find on goggle or the other search engine's......Good luck...

try a google search on 'bestiary' that'll bring up loads.
try searching H.P. Lovecraft too....scary stories, you'll have to scroll down a few links tho to find one that has the texts online...most want you to subscribe or buy the books, but there are a few...
also try searching Alistair Crowley...if u havent already heard of this nutter your in for a treat....very influential nutter.
another would be fun, try 'rofomagus lucifuge' nutty wizard type.
the 'fortean times' has its own website and lots of links to that sort of stuff
happy hunting... grin2.gif

I like mythology and monsters and stuff too... of course I'm sure you've read "Beowulf" if not, it's definitely a must read.

If you like Greek Mythology, try a book called The King Must Die by Mary Renault (it's about Theseus and the Minotaur). It's a novel, but it's a great read.

'The Golden Bough' by Sir James Frazier also ' The Encyclopedia of Witchcraft and Demonology' by Rossell Hope Robbins, Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. It has all the old writings in it and is excellent. It was published in 1959 so it might not be on Amazon. I found my copy in a used bookstore in Medford. 'The Golden Bough' is still in print at any college bookstore.

It contains information on mythological creatures and myth origins.
