The dry lake bed called Racetrack Playa lies high in the mountains on California's border with Nevada - in the desolate Death Valley National Park. The tracks of moving rocks in the dried mud of the Plays first came to light in the 19 5Os - and have excited speculation about 'living' rocks. Dr Robert Sharp - a Californian geologist who has studied the phenomenon since 1969 - believes the rocks - weighing up to 300kg - are pushed by strong winds after rain has made the Playa surface slippery. But this is only one of many theories; no one has yet seen the rocks move and many aspects of the tracks are still unexplained.

I have seen this on T.V .. and I really wish to see it in real life .. I think its not only the wind which helps it move .. there might be some kind of force going on underground .. maybe a simple earthquake .. or .. the stone can tumble from the mountains and those tumbling stones help move the other stones that already are tumbled before .. wacko.gif dontgetit.gif tongue.gif

Strange!

It could be a number of things, but everything that springs to mind has a flaw. Wind? Even with wet muddy ground, would the wind push it along? And if the ground needs to be wet, wouldn’t that wipe away the track? Geomagnetic disturbances underground could be another answer. Maybe the stones have high concentrations of metal ore in them, and geomagnetic disturbances that co-inside with earthquakes have giving them a nudge? Or it could simply be, there little trolls, and when the sun comes up, they revert back to their silicon based form of a rock! huh.gif

The theory could be true. Have you ever see a glass of water kind of slide across a smooth table surface if you gently blow on it? That is because of the condensation accumulating around its bottom. It kinds of "lift" the glass up. So I guess the same principle apply to these rocks.

ph34r.gif Speaking of rocks of death. Does anyone remember the soul-eating stones?? These stones that measured about half the size of a man, were believed to have the power to suck the soul out of you! blink.gif.The stones were found in Hawaii i think, and had to be stored away eventually because wierd things were happeneing and people were losing their souls. So now theyre kept in some warehouse.

Never heard of that before. Have you any links? Or has anyone else? Or is it an urban legend? dontgetit.gif

uh, believe it or not, i was going to post a topic on this just today, bu ti thought id search for a twin topic before i did, luckily. iv got something to add, however. the problem with the wind theory is that some rocks dont move, and some rocks move in different directions! there seems to be no pattern in the rocks moving with size or shape or location. a tiny square rock might not move, but a big rock right next to it might. of 2 rocks of the exact same size 2 inches apart at the same level, one might move one way, one might not move, one might move the other way, whatever. some rocks even stop for a time, and then start again after a irregular period.

Now I wonder, why has no one simply just camped out here and watched to see what actually happens?
man_in_mudboots
because it would take a long, long time. its not like the rocks go zooming all over the place or anything, their movement is very slow. its much more practical to just set out camras to watch them. its like watching the grass grow, just more interesting. thumbsup.gif
bathory
yeah, should set up timelapse cameras

thats weird!
I never heard about this before
i went to Death Valley years ago for a vacation
