MILAN (Reuters) - A Milan teacher cut a unruly 7-year-old pupil's tongue with scissors to silence him, police and school officials said on Tuesday.

The child, of North African origin, needed to go to hospital for five stitches to close the wound.

The boy's family has filed suit against the teacher, who has been suspended after last week's incident.

Police are trying to find out whether the injury was inflicted intentionally or was a joke gone wrong, a police source said.

"We are carrying out a full inquiry to find out what really happened," said Anna Maria Dominici, in charge of schools in the Lombardy region.

The teacher, a support tutor on a temporary contract, risks being fired from the elementary school.

"She is a young teacher but the episode is so serious that inexperience has nothing to do with it," Dominici added.

She's only at risk of being fired? Till I got finished, she'd be lucky to find a job working anywhere...

That poor kid! I feel so bad for that kid now.

If I was the empylor of the woman, I would have fired on the spot. disgust.gif

That's unbelievable.......This is assault with a deadly weapon as far as I'm concerned..... Poor kid and parents.....You send them to school to be educated and trust the teachers to do their job and this happens......What next ? no.gif

A substitute teacher in Italy who cut the tongue of a 7-year-old student faces the loss of her job.

The teacher has also been charged with assault, the Italian news agency Ansa reported.

"Zero tolerance is the only response to such unacceptable behavior," said Education Minister Giuseppe Fioroni. "Hundreds of thousands of good teachers do not merit being discredited by the actions of a few."

The teacher, who was filling in with a second-grade class in Milan, has admitted injuring the student but says that it was an accident. She said that the boy was being unruly and she jokingly threatened to cut out his tongue with a pair of scissors, which slipped.

The parents, immigrants from Tunisia, say that the boy has refused to go to school since he was injured, and the mother has had to give up her job to stay home with him.

Totally not an accident (what idiot would put the blade on the kid's tongue if its a joke?)

This is disturbing.

How stupid would a person have to be to even think of doing something like that. My mind completely boggles at this stupidity.

This is unnacceptable and I hope that criminal charges manage to stick.

Even if somehow it WAS an accident someone stupid enough to do something like this should definately not be workign with children

ha for that comment so do you, step up to the plate !

Oooo and I was MAD when the baby sitter cut my daughters hair without permission... Oh if that was my child, I'd actively make sure that teacher never had contact with kids again.

Knowing how tough a human tounge is, there is no way that was an accident! 5 stitches to close the wound--that is NOT anything to shake a stick at! Good God.

this is awful stupid teacher

There is no excuse for this whether it was a joke or not. SHe is supposed to be an educator? She doesn't have the sense God gave a goose. Yeah, her job would so be the least of her worries.

Jeez, yes kids can be brats sometimes (ok, a lot of the time) but thats no reason to go after a 7 year old kid with a pair of scissors and cut off their tongue!! If you can't deal with bratty kids, then teaching is NOT the job for you.
Ugh, just imagine the force she had to use to actually sit on the kid and cut his tongue out. I can't even imagine the pain sad.gif If that were my kid, that teacher would be missing more than her job! An eye for an eye I say (or a tongue for a tongue..and then some!)

Oh my ... that is a bit extreme, poor kid, hope he has a speedy recovery.

OMG, this is like the worst excuse someone can come up with. Now I'm almost convinced that she did it on purpose.
