user posted image rHoneybees are vanishing at an alarming rate from 24 US states, threatening the production of numerous crops. The cause of the losses, which range from 30% to more than 70%, is a mystery, but experts are investigating several theories. American bee colonies have been hit by regional crises before, but keepers say this is the first national crisis. Bees pollinate more than $14bn (£7bn) worth of US seeds and crops each year, mostly fruits, vegetables and nuts. The mystery disappearances highlight the important link that honeybees play in the chain that brings fruit and vegetables to supermarkets and dinner tables. The crisis threatens numerous crops, from avocados to kiwis and California almonds - one of the most profitable in the US. "I have never seen anything like it," California beekeeper David Bradshaw, 50, told the New York Times. "Box after box after box are just empty. There's nobody home." With an industry increasingly under consolidation, some fear the disorder could prove the breaking point for even large beekeepers. The bee losses range from 30 to 60% on the West Coast, with some beekeepers on the East Coast and in Texas reporting losses of more than 70%. Beekeepers consider a loss of up to 20% in the offseason to be normal.

Researchers say the bees are presumably dying in the fields, perhaps becoming exhausted or simply disoriented and eventually falling victim to the cold. "The real question is why they leave," Jerry Hayes, a bee expert for the Florida Department of Agriculture told the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. "Bees are highly social insects. They don't leave their babies and the queen." The investigators are exploring a range of possibilities to explain the losses, which they are calling "colony collapse disorder". These include viruses, a fungus and poor bee nutrition. They are also studying pesticides banned

The bees are not disappearing there hiding. There sneaking off to a secret location and when the time is right there going to attack!

On a more realistic note. I have seen this for myself when I lived back in Missouri you use to see bees all the time. Even my grate grand pa use to have a bee hive. Now days no one does this. There might be more at work too. With the sudden rise in cell phones, Wi-Fi cards and other things that give off signals has any one considered what this does to insects or animals? That call your making could be causing a nearby bee to lose its way home.

i like Wolfen thoughts on the subject. bees plotting world domination. It could happen.

According to article I have read the majority of bees in a hive will fly away and die, but the few remaining have enormous quantities of pathogens in them. It's as if their immune system has been switched off (bee HIV?)

Perhaps this is an unforeseen consequence of the genetic modification of some crops? The bees have ingested GM pollen and this has disturbed their own physiology, suppressing their immune response? Supposition of course, but perhaps an avenue worth investigating.

I've noticed for the last 2 summers the lack of regular bumble bees compared to the high number of yellow jackets ( wasps) where I live here in Michigan.

I hate yellow jackets !!!!!!

It's not only disappearing bees that worries me, but also decreased bee activity. When I lived in California a few years ago, because of the weather, I always noticed a lot of bee activity, and insect activity in general: flies, spiders; but since I moved up here to Oregon where it's very cold and sunny weather is far and few between, I haven't seen any spiders inside my house, I can leave my windows open because bees just aren't that active in this kind of weather. I haven't seen any flies either.

I've heard it said that we're moving toward another Ice Age which could occur spontaneously. If this happens, I think most of the insects we depend upon will become inactive and that, I feel, will also cause major problems.

I've been told it's bee mites... but then they've been around for a long time....

Then you look at Bee Farming.... how bee farming methods keep bees in check... prevent Swarming... hive death... etc....

Could that have been their natural way of leaving a polluted.. diseases nest...and moving to fresh pastures... or avoiding overpopulation...

With commercial bee keeping that has become very profitable of late...rental prices of hives have tripled of late....

Could it have gone the way of the Terminator seeds... where man as in Monsanto
....is trying to control nature...and destroying everything it can't controll for financial reasons???

In some of the most publicized American research to date, Cornell University scientists reported recently that 44% of monarch butterfly larvae died within four days when fed milkweed (their exclusive food) that had been dusted with pollen from GA corn, while all the caterpillars fed normal corn pollen survived.18 British research has shown that beneficial insects such as ladybugs and lacewings are negatively affected by feeding on GA crops, which are supposed to only affect 'target' insect predators.19,20 Study has begun on the effects on the rest of the food chain, as birds and other wildlife then feed on these insects that have consumed the GA crops. Fear of his has led English Nature (the British Government's wildlife advisor) to warn that the introduction of GA herbicide tolerant crops "could be the final blow for species like the skylark, the linnet and the corn bunting."21

However, there may soon not be enough bees to transport a sufficient amount of pollen, as a result of colony collapse disorder; this is the catch-all name that encompasses a myriad of possible reasons why the honeybees are disappearing, ranging from a new infection to a compromised immune system.

Some economists have estimated this single species is worth as much as $14 billion to the U.S. economy. Moreover, pollinated plants may account for as much as one-third of the average American diet, and possibly the healthiest portion of it.

A German study may have identified a simple answer to the problem: The ongoing blight of genetically modified (GM) crops. When bees were released in a GM rapeseed crop, then fed the pollen to younger bees, scientists discovered the bacteria in the guts of the young ones mirrored the same genetic traits as ones found in the GM crop.

I recently read a local article in our paper about a swarm of bees that invaded a school charity function. They estimate that approximately 3,000 bees landed on the over-sized umbrella they were using for the function. Everything came to a halt until a local beekeeper could arrive and use smoke to caux the bees into the portable hives he brought. Strange behaviour.

Insect resistant potatoes are in a store near you, which have been genetically engineered to contain their own pesticide. And which pesticide did Monsanto choose? Bacillus thuringiensis,. http://www.biotech-info.net/bt_cummins.html . http://educate-yourself.org/cn/untolddange...ps07jul04.shtml ..Like pesticides, genetically engineered organisms don't stay put. Bees can carry pollen from these new "frankenplants" to a wild organism or another nearby farmer's field. This could seriously impact organic grower's ability to maintain their organic certification standards. And what's really scary-now that they've been released into the environment, genetic mistakes can never be contained or recalled. "The FDA has knowingly endangered public health in order to promote the financial interests of giant corporations. In doing so, it has systematically lied and has flagrantly violated federal law", according to Steven M. Druker, J.D., Executive Director, Alliance for Bio-Integrity. This must be an X Files episode!

Abate larvicide is widely used throughout the world in public health programs for control of arthropod vectors of disease. Abate brand temephos is an organophosphorous compound manufactured by BASF. Abate effectively controls mosquitoes, chironomid midges, chaoborid midges and sand flies. Abate is recommended by international governmental agencies for use is public health programs.

Um, I may be wrong, but I think I remember seeing this a long time ago and it was said that we're worrying too late. Real honey bees no longer exist in the US.

What does everyone think is going on with this. I've been thinking about this for a few days and its worrying me.

How will they pollinate the crops? It almost seems like the bees are protesting.
